  1. Ladies, in addition to my hair salon thread, I'd like to also collect the latest recommendations for nail salons.

I'd be looking for a salon that does Shellac / UV cured nail polish thinly on top of a natural nail and does it well with a good choice of colors or perfect french manicure with UV polish. A place where they are careful when removing old Shellac / UV polish, so that they don't take off too much of the natural nail.

I'm not looking for gel extensions or acrylic.

Location wise, the south of the island or around Chalong / Central would be ideal.

  2. A question for ladies in Phuket with thin and fragile hair who regularly go to get blonde color done. Where do you go in Phuket?

Please recommend a hair stylist who has a lot of experience with thin, Western hair. I have long hair and would like to keep it. Yet I need to color it blonde to hide some grey hair every once in a while.

It's important that the salon doesn't bleach the hair or uses too strong products that might be fine for thick, black Thai hair to bleach, but might destroy Western hair.

They also should generally make sure not to rip out hair or try to brush out knots after washing. Perhaps let the customer untangle the hair themselves. It can take a long time for my long hair so they need to be patient and not kick me out haha.

When cutting they should be able to listen and not thin out the ends like they tend to do with Thai hair, just a straight cut.

  3. There are a lot of things to consider and it depends which things are important to you.

If you want to avoid the overly medicalized birth and high c-section rates in Thailand, if you prefer natural birth, midwifes, homebirth then you have a lot more options in Australia for the birth, there are no midwifes working independently outside of hospitals in Thailand .

You should be in a place where you feel safe and comfortable for the last part of your pregnancy, birth and the first months after, you probably won't want to relocate during that time.

If you move to Krabi it would not be practical to give birth in Bangkok or Phuket, if you need a Dr. who will take it seriously in case you want a natural birth. If you wanted a homebirth in Krabi you would need to have a midwife fly from Australia (I know 2 foreign women in Thailand who did this).

It's also not easy to have your wishes respected in a Thai hospital in regards to having father attend birth, not separating baby from you after birth, not corrupting breastfeeding by giving newborn bottle, vaccinations, it all can turn stressful.

It is good to have some help after the birth but I would agree that you might not feel comfortable for everyone in a village to touch your baby until he/she is a bit older, say 3 months. You also want to be in a position to make your own decisions regarding vaccinating or not, breastfeeding, and not to having to argue with anyone about this including family and doctors.

What are your thoughts on natural birth, breastfeeding, vaccinating?

Do you feel comfortable where you are now in Australia? Do you have a midwife already?

How is the relationship to you mother in Australia, would you like her support during / after the birth or rather not?

Could you afford a nice housekeeper to help you in Thailand after the birth?

Those are the things to ask yourself for the coming months. Once the baby is 3 months or so you can change locations / countries more easily to suit your needs.

  4. I'm sorry, but i don't understand these kind of questions. Did you not ask in the banks that could not provide you with notes where you could get them?

Yes in some banks I asked and they sent me to the next bank on the same floor. "try UOB" "maybe SCB" etc ..

Someone said at the airport but I am worried they might give a bad rate there or they don't have the amount I need, and if they need to order or demand notice, once I am at the airport I am already leaving.

Also I travel with a small child so the travel and airport is difficult enough and I'd rather not spend more time doing currency exchange on that day.

I would prefer somewhere in South Phuket. I don't really know my way around Phuket town.

  5. I would like to buy Euros but had no luck today at any of the banks in Central Festival on the 2nd floor. They all said they don't have any, it's quite hard to believe, they did not even ask me how much I need.

Where else should I try to find any?

  6. I am 30 and not married but have a baby with my Thai partner and we live in Thailand.

I can afford to live here and support my Thai partner and could afford to send our child to a good school here later, but it is still something I am trying to figure out. I am not yet sure how to divide our time between Thailand and my home country to make sure our baby will learn both languages properly and fluently and experience the best of both cultures and gets a good education as well.

I think to become fluent in my language (German) we should live with our baby in my home country for about 1 year before he turns 5/6, around the age of 3/4 I guess, once he is already taking well in Thai language and make sure he gets lots of time playing and interacting with other kids to learn the language well.

That way we could decide later if he should start primary school in Thailand or my home country. It would not be good I guess to go exactly when primary school starts because without being fluent in the language it might be a hard start. My friend is a primary school teacher in Austria and told me that foreign kids who start primary school without being fluent have a hard time catching up from the start.

I would appreciate any advice from anyones own experience.

How to give the child some stability in life without constantly moving schools and travelling but still allow it to experience both cultures. What ages would be best to spend in which country and why?

  7. I would like to discuss things that should be considered, mainly in regards to legalities, when a foreign female has a baby with a Thai male.

    Assumptions:

The foreign female and Thai male are both unmarried.

The baby will be born in Thailand.

The foreign female plans to live in Thailand with the baby but also travel overseas freely with the baby, with or without the babies Thai father.

The foreign female already has a visa to stay in Thailand, does not depend on the Thai male or baby for a visa.

The foreign female does not require financial support from the Thai father.

The babies Thai father is not present at the birth / during registering the birth.

The foreign female would like to avoid trouble when travelling alone with the baby.

I would like to discuss Pros and Cons for several specific decisions that need to be made:

    - List the Thai father on the babies Thai birth certificate or not? (Probably need to or else no Thai passport for baby and possible visa problems later for child)

    - Baby name, to give Thai first name VS Foreign first name VS first and middle names

    - Baby name, to give Thai fathers last name VS foreign females last name

    - Foreign female to apply for sole custody in Thailand or not

    Some legal questions:

    - Can the Thai father be listed on the birth certificate at all if he is not present during birth / registration?

    - Can the foreign female apply for a Thai passport for the baby without the Thai father being present or signing anything, if the fathers name is already on the birth certificate?

    - What are the Thai fathers rights when he is listed on the birth certificate VS not being listed?

    - Can the foreign female apply for a passport for the baby of her own nationality without the father or signature present if he is on the birth certificate? I assume if he is not it would be easy to do without fathers presence / signature?

    - If the foreign female gets some legalized Thai sole custody document, Thai father being on the birth certificate, would it then be illegal for the Thai father to 'abduct' the baby?

    - How would the foreign female be able to get a document that certifies sole custody?

    - Is it possible to change the babies birth certificate to add the Thai father later, I assume then the nationality of the baby would need to be changed from foreign to Thai on the birth certificate later?

    - I read that babies do not get fined for overstay, but does it have any negative consequences or problems when re-entering Thailand or other countries, if the baby only has a foreign passport, no Thai passport and no Thai father listed on the birth certificate, and the baby regularly overstays because the foreign mother is living in Thailand on long term visas?

    - If the baby has the Thai fathers last name, would you expect trouble anywhere when the foreign female travels alone with the baby?
