Why doesn't the bird(flu)brain PM get some schmuck (whose votes he bought for him) to introduce stupidity like this into Parliament, then allow the Parliament to do its job?
Even if it wasn't the PM who decided to start this then whichever idiot Cabinet minister could have done the same.
Some obscure bill/proposal floating around Parliament would have hardly raised an eyebrow amongst the international press and tourist organizations, and could have just as easily succombed to the apparent death it has succombed to without pissing off half the Kingdom and most of the visitors here who were following the story.
The entire issue of what time bars had to close never really bothered me. It was the Draconian and completely un-democratic way that it was going to be imposed.
Why bother with provinces and local elections if such simple matters as bar closing times are dictated from the "Ruling Council" (ie: the Cabinet with Saddam Shinawatra at its head)
Democracy isn't perfect, but handing out supposed executive decrees sure doesn't help the process, especially when the decision-makers waffle the way they do.
Maybe Thaksin is trying to butter up to "Mr. Waffle" John Kerry, as GW Bush is a "worthless friend".

I've been to their offices a couple times and they have pictures of HH Princess Srindahorn giving them kudos hanging all over their walls, are run by American management, were working on some Halliburton software while I was there, and seemed quite professional.
They're located off Chang Wattana Rd in BKK, just west of the western, north-south leg (Crimony why can't they number the expressways???????????) of the expressway system in a HUGE building that has "SOFTWARE PARK" emblazoned on a sign at the top of the building.
It's the only tall (30 stories or so) building along that stretch of road so it's kind of tough to miss.

Hopefully you have a target market/country in mind.
Visit their embassy/consulate or better yet customs office if they maintain one in BKK.
Find out the import duty and quota information for your product.
If it still looks feasible at that point then visit the Thai Dept. of Export Promotion and have a sit-down with the nice folks there to make sure that they have no restrictions on the item you intend to export. Most likely they won't.
Next--how will you deliver and to whom will be supplying?
Will you be sending 20 and 40 foot containers full of stuff to Wal-Mart or will you market smaller orders to individuals and/or smaller companies?
If you're sending container loads then go talk to a freight forwarder and get yourself a customs agent in the country you will export to.
If you're sending packages up to 30 kg in weight then go talk to UPS.

They don't have a clue. They seem to have overlooked the "World Wide" portion of the web and can't get their shit together to help somone like me. "Well 99% of our customers are in the USA...." they tell me, "and we don't know how to handle your situation".
Well why oh why do they list Afganistan to Zim-frickin-babwe as the shipping origin options and claim to be able to integrate UPS shipping rates?????????
There's a huge market out there for you developers that know how to think outside the USA box.

I've read about quite a few traffic incidents where the survivor "fled the scene" in the Pattaya Mail.
Couple of examples----
A Swedish guy & his girlfriend were killed by a tour bus that struck their motorcycle on Sukhumvit in Pattaya-------"Police were looking for the tour bus driver who had failed to stop, and when found would face serious charges"
A Thai motorcycle mechanic was killed when test-driving a motorcycle he had just repaired-----"Witnesses said they saw the doomed man traveling at a high rate of speed on the wrong side of the road, when he hit a cement truck head-on, killing him instantly. The driver of the cement truck had fled the scene, and police were looking to question him."
A Thai motorcycle madman was driving in the wrong direction down the middle of Sukhumvit Rd when the inevitable happened. He was struck by one car that failed to stop, which caused him lose control. he was then struck by two other vehicles. He was rushed to the Pattaya Bangkok emergency room, but sadly enough, was pronounced dead on arrival.
The above aren't exact quotes, but are pretty close.
What gets me, is that I never read anything about the fleeing drivers ever again.
I guess the Pattaya cops are too busy enforcing motorcycle helmet laws & such.....

They have great pre-made tortillas, burritos & chimichangas. Just toss 'em in the microwave for a minute & you're chowing down. They come with a packet of salsa & they're not bad either. Look for them in the produce section near the cheese. My Thai wife loves 'em.
I think they're around 50 baht for a pack of 4.
They also have the plain tortilla & burrito bread.
FYI Magenta, Foodland is a grocery store chain here. They also have some of the best steaks around.

I have a US bank account & I maintain a Mailboxes ETC address there so I was able to get a merchant account from a US provider.
I went with Linkpoint Central and it cost a couple hundred bucks to get started.
Go to www.charge.com to get the Linkpoint account if that will work for you.

Looks like AsiaDebit is your best bet if you can't/don't want to get a US account.
I chose www.precisionweb.net for the shopping cart side of it. They also provide webhosting.
One thing to look out for is how easily it will be to tie the two together (shopping cart & merchant acct). Precisionweb claimed they were easily integratible w/ Linkpoint but I had to make 13 phone calls to the US to both companies before I finally got someone to tell me what to do.

I used to have a sore neck every time I flew as I was lugging my laptop around in a shoulderbag.
Now I have a small computer case with wheels and a collapsible handle. My neck doesn't get crinks anymore when I travel.
I bought mine at JCPenny in Florida for $50. I've seen the same bag at the Chicago airport with a pricetag of $299 on it.
Even at $299 though, this bag would have paid for itself in chiropractor bills quite rapidly.

I'm not destitute, but I'm not rich.
I'm willing to pay a fair wage for work done. I'm willing to pay Western wages, but I will expect Western promptness and quality of work.
I've had one Aussie price gouge me, one Swedish guy contract "brain damage" (no joke--that was his excuse for not returning my calls nor doing any work 2 weeks after I'd had a laptop to laptop meeting with him at his home).
I found a very nice Austrian guy that did 6,000 baht of work for me, for 1,000 baht.
Only problem with my Austrian friend is that he doesn't answer his phone, nor his email, nor the SMS messages I send him. His work was superb, and I'd like to pay him the remaining 5,000 baht. I hope he's still alive.

Answer emails, phone calls, and/or SMS messages within 48 hours, and have a fair hourly rate.
Look, I've spent 4,000 baht on Dreamweaver "How To" books recently, but I inevitably run into problems which work out better for me to just call someone and say "Fix this", than it does for me to sit around scratching my head on the subject.
I need to concentrate my efforts on other areas of my business.

Is the site you were trying to log into hosted in Thailand?
I recently read somewhere (possibly here) that Toxin was going on yet another "crackdown"--This one against porn sites as it's "illegal" in LOS.
From what I gathered though, they would only be blocking sites that were hosted inside LOS.
Also, you're not by any chance using a computer that was once configured to get online in the Middle East are you?
I lived in Abu Dhabi for 14 months once upon a time in '98-'99 & had to reformat my hard drive after leaving there in order to get their cencorship BS off my laptop.

There's nothing better than a super cool mutt.
They never piss & moan, never ask for money, and are just DYING for me to come out and spend 10-20 minutes tossing the ball around for them.
NO, NOT ALL dogs are like this. That's an exception to the rule. That describes my 2 Golden Retrievers.
Bloody amazing though the enjoyment potential that a cool dog can give you when it's taken care of and has had regular de-worming treatments.
I've had to endure the VERY unpleasant experience of putting my dog down due to merciful reasons before, and to do that with a dog that was a good friend is quite painful.
However,
Wild, idiotic (noisy), vicious, and dangerous dogs fall under the category of rats, so I have no problem with speeding them along their way to meet their maker.

I'm a true dog lover.
I have 2 Golden Retreivers that are as cool as cool can get when it comes to mutts.
New neighbor just moved into the house next door that's been vacant for 10 months.
He has 2 nice looking mutts, but one of them just barks non-stop all night.
My dogs are ignoring him, asleep on the porch as I write this, while idiot-dog is trying his lungs for all they're worth.
I've tried to make friends with the idiot mutt, but that just induces further barking.
I took the wrist-rocket slingshot to him last night & that shut him up for the evening.
I love dogs, but this one is on his way to a meeting with my 9 iron and an uncerimonial dumping (if he survives the 9-iron) in Chanthaburi as I'm on my way to Ko Chang next week.

On a humorous note, I once stopped into a convenience store in Florida to buy some beer.
I had to politely wait for this 85 year old woman to get whatever she was getting out of the cooler, so I waited.
Upon approaching the checkout counter, it became evident that she had a great big honker-bottle of MD20/20.
The kind kid behind the counter, as well as myself and everybody else in the place were all saying "NO!"
She said "I was just looking for some nice wine" in her little-old-lady voice.
We all emphatically encouraged her to reconsider, and the clerk walked her back to the cooler to help her with another choice.
Flippin' HILARIOUS!!!

I guess it depends on your nationality.
I'm a US citizen & have flown in here NUMEROUS (50+ times) without a return ticket.
The worst I ever had was once in Orlando, when the United Airlines check-in agent didn't want to issue me a boarding pass unless I had a return ticket (the airlines get fined for allowing inappropriate visa-holders boarding passes in many countries).
I just slapped down the AMEX card & told her "Sell me a 1st class return ticket for the maximum price" as I was just going to go get a refund on it once I hit BKK.
That addled her enough that she queried her supervisor about it, and they allowed me to board without buying a return ticket.

I posted this previously in the IT forum, but thought it might get some other responses here.
Purely Hypothetical Question--------Let's say....
I'm a US citizen. I have a bank account in the USA.
I have a merchant account in the USA that deposits my online sales into my US bank account.
I sell certain product(s) made in Thailand online, then, after the sale is made, I go to the Thai merchant and physically acquire this product, and ship it back to the US (or any foreign) customer.
No I haven't done this yet, but it appears to be my only viable business option at this point, as I don't have $50,000 USD (2 million baht) lying around to capitalize a Thai business.
Also, How, oh HOW, would anybody (farang that is) ever be able to start an online business in Thailand unless they were going to slap down $50,000 USD to have a "juristic presence" and then they'd have to wait for a year to be able to get a Thai credit card merchant account, to be legal.
I'm not looking for legal advice here, just some varied thoughts & opinions.
