  1. some of the speed tests are inaccurate due to local caching.

    Recommend you try:

    TestMy.net Broadband Internet Speed Test

    > click Test Servers in the top right to change server locations.

Well that is very interesting, using that site for testing gives my 2.5 down from California and 6 from Hong Kong.

I do know that this is an actual fiber connection right to the router as I helped them string the cable and watched him prepare the fiber ( smaller than a human hair) to attach to the router.

Regardless which speed test is the correct one, I can say that I'm very happy with this service compared to my old TOT ADSL, in speed, stability and price. Now lets just hope it stays this way tongue.png

  2. I have the 30 down / 3 up package here in Hua Hin and am very impressed. The connection is super stable, no on/off on/off like I had with TOT ADSL.

I thought that the high speed would be limited to within Thailand but I can do a speed test to California and still get over 20 down and 3 up. We aren't using the TV that came bundled with it, but this package also includes a sim card with 100 mins and unlimited internet ( which I'm sure gets throttled at some point). All this is 799 baht, a bargain in my opinion.

  3. I would think being married to her mother shouldn't matter, but again probably best to get some advise from a US lawyer. I would think that this situation is pretty common. For example maybe in the case of exchange students living with host parents in another country, i would think that they would need to have some sort of legal guardianship while in thier care.

  4. My wife also has a 10 year US visa, so no problem for her to travel unrestricted. If your daughter has a US visa then she can also travel unrestricted, so no conflict there with either US or Thailand.

As to the guardian issue, now I think you might be mixing apples and oranges. As stated you have no legal rights in Thailand, however I don't see why you can not have a legal guardianship created in the US, but this would need to done with the help of a US lawyer, nothing what so ever to do with Thailand. This would make perfect sense as if she is a minor living in the US and she needed urgent medical attention for example you would want to be able to grant that.

Good luck and let us know how it works out.

  5. Forget it.

I'm legally married to the mother of the little girl who calls me Daddy ( for the last 7 years) and I tried to do this. We all went to Bangkok to the department that handles such things and it was a complete waste of time. Thai law states that if I wanted to adopt her daughter, she ( the mother) would have to give up custody and I would have sole custody. A completely ridiculous, discriminatory law. On top of that if we even went ahead with this we would be subjected to at a minimum 2 -3 years of scrutiny before it would even be able to be considered. I contacted a well respected law firm in Thailand and they said that they had tried to help others in the past and because of the draconian, xenophopic Thai law they were no longer handling any adoption cases.

Did you know that a Thai can simply go to the local Amphur and change thier name to any name.....provided of course it is a Thai name. My wife attempted to change the little girls name to my last name but was refused. She could change it to any Thai name though.

  6. I should mention that out of the 7 Foscam cameras I have, 6 are Mjpeg 8910W and one is an H264 9821W V2. Even though these are all "indoor" cameras, all but 2 are mounted outside under the eaves so not exposed to rain and have been working fine for almost 2 years now. For me the more expensive 9821W is not worth the extra money, however my son has a 9831W and he is pretty impressed with that, but it is double the price of the old tech 8910W.

I find it odd that even though the 9821W is H264 compression it is consistently the last camera to show an image when I use either Foscam Pro or LiveCams Pro to view on my iPhone.

  7. Just a blanket, the father must pay, may not always be just.

If for instance the wife leaves for no good reason and against the wishes of the father and moves in with another man should the father still have to pay.

This could be a real travesty if for instance the father is denied access to the child.

In this case he took off with the intention of withholding payments but what were the circumstances of the breakup.

I personally know of one case where a mother has moved out with children to live with another man and she and that man (unemployed) are living off Govt benefits while money is being is deducted from the fathers income to cover those benefits.

Yes, would be interesting to know the whole story here before we pass judgement on this guy......

  8. I sure never said that Foscam are the best cameras, just in my opinion one of the better ones at that price point. As with most things, you get what you pay for. I have a total of 7 Foscam cameras, they do the job for me, but I'm sure that there are many that are just as good or better.

One of the big things to check before buying any camera is the apps that are available to view them on your mobile devices.

  9. Isn't this a waste of money ? this flight takes only 15-20 min.... facepalm.gif

Hua Hin to Hat Yai is about 1 hour........

It is 745kms by road from Hua Hin to Hat Yai, and around 700kms by air. The Lion Air ATR 42-600 has a cruising speed of only 494km/hr, so the flight time taking into account take off and landing is going to be around 1hr 30 mins.

You were probably thinking of the Nok Air flight from Bangkok to Hua Hin which only takes around 20 minutes. It would make more sense for Nok Air to Fly Bangkok to Hua Hin to Hat Yai.

Estrada is right on the money, Lionair is quoting 1hr 30 mins exactly.......I did say ABOUT 1 hr tongue.png

  10. I am from Victoria. Got marrfied 2 months ago. Registered it 3 weeks later with her using my last name. Changed her name everywhere - banks, employer, social security, id card ... really easy including passport. Bought a house also no issues except I had to sign something at the land office as her husband but that would have been the case regardless of name. All in all it was a bit of running around but no issues at all. I am a retired lawyer and while this is only just my theory I believe Canadian immigration will take her application even more seriously when they see my last name on all her docs. Maybe not so much in practice but perhaps psychologically. Thats not why we did it but it can't hurt. We both like the idea of her first name going with my mine. Don't do it for stategy but don't not do it out of concern for anything.

I agree that if she has your name it just goes that bit further with foreign embassies. My wife got a US 10 year visa on her first application and a 3 year one for Canada ( until her passport expires). I really believe applying with my last name helped in this situation.

Land purchase is not a problem, my wife has bought land in her married name. Some people are still thinking about an old law that disqualified Thai women from owning land if they were married to a farang (name change or not) That law was struck down at least 20 years ago...

  11. Good info there on lights guys. I need to to replace mine. When I had the pool constructed I specified LED lights, but since I knew nothing about them and was too busy with other stuff I just let the supplier supply them. Well as you already know that was a mistake. Too dim and one leaked so it is done. Will have to dig into that soon.

On another note. Cleaning of the pool. I have a pool guy who does mine twice a week for 2000B/mth. That includes 1 bag of salt and acid if required to maintain PH. He does an OK job except for one thing, backwashing. I was catching him backwashing the filter (Zeolite) about once a week. I tried to explain the function of the pressure gage to him and of course he said ok, understand. Then the next week there again is 500 gals of water going out to the ditch. Waste of water and salt. I work overseas and am away for 6 weeks at a time so I had no choice but to remove the handle from the filter to stop him doing this.

  12. Sorry OP, you asked about overflow vs skimmer.....I missed that in my last post.

As to overflow pools there are basically 2 types. " infinitity" style and non. Then you have skimmer pools. In my opinion it really depends on personal preference and how you will use the pool. If you have kids (or adults) that like doing cannonballs into the pool then an infinity pool is not for you. The type that has grates around the entire perimeter can handle most of the high waves though. The grates are very expensive I should add, so that and the overflow tank will add to the cost. Overflow tanks I have seen are all concrete and of course positioned below the level of the pool so there is that consideration. I went skimmer as I have that before and had no problems.

One other thing that I don't believe was mentioned here is an automatic pool level maintainer. If you have an overflow pool this is standard I believe, but for my skimmer pool I missed this part in my pool construction and regret it to this day. I since purchased a wireless remote unit, but the basic ones are really trouble free (like a toilet tank float valve). Pools in Thailand can lose as much as 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of water per day to evaporation.

Good luck and happy pool days.

  13. Cyanuric acid is basically "sunscreen" for your pool. Sunlight destroys chlorine so the Cyanuric acid slows this down. For some reason Cyanuric acid is ridiculously expensive in Thailand. I run my pump/chlorinator for 8 hrs per day, 4 hrs in the morning and 4 hrs in the late afternoon. The chlorinator is set on 4 out of 8 and this maintains the correct chlorine level. I should add that my pool is shaded except for about 5-6 hours of the day and I don't use Cyanuric acid at all.

I agree that if people are complaining about the saltiness of your pool you must have the concentration too high. I can taste the salt in my pool, but just barely.

To the OP, Jessefrank has given you some very valuable and accurate information on pools, I agree with all his observations. There is so much misinformation out there it is good to see someone passing along useful information.
