3 Cheers for the NCPO Now if only this was a permanent measure..........I can only dream ......

So now they are saying he fell out of the helicopter? Not fell from the winch cable?
Safety protocols are the doors should never be opened unless all crew are harnessed and attached to either the winch cable or aircraft hard points.
-
Where exactly did I say it was the crews fault??? I said "Will be interesting to see if anyone actually admits fault"
If it was an approved harness then there really is no "release" It has to be purposely un-clipped and that can only be done once safely on the ground.
Please note my use of the word "if" in my posts......
-
If he was attached to an approved a/c winch then both the pilot and winchman has the ability to guillotine the cable in an emergency situation. The switches are normally safe in so much as it takes 2 distinct functions to cut the cable.
Will be interesting to see if anyone actually admits fault....

Isn't this a waste of money ? this flight takes only 15-20 min....
Hua Hin to Hat Yai is about 1 hour........
It is 745kms by road from Hua Hin to Hat Yai, and around 700kms by air. The Lion Air ATR 42-600 has a cruising speed of only 494km/hr, so the flight time taking into account take off and landing is going to be around 1hr 30 mins.
You were probably thinking of the Nok Air flight from Bangkok to Hua Hin which only takes around 20 minutes. It would make more sense for Nok Air to Fly Bangkok to Hua Hin to Hat Yai.
Estrada is right on the money, Lionair is quoting 1hr 30 mins exactly.......I did say ABOUT 1 hr

I am from Victoria. Got marrfied 2 months ago. Registered it 3 weeks later with her using my last name. Changed her name everywhere - banks, employer, social security, id card ... really easy including passport. Bought a house also no issues except I had to sign something at the land office as her husband but that would have been the case regardless of name. All in all it was a bit of running around but no issues at all. I am a retired lawyer and while this is only just my theory I believe Canadian immigration will take her application even more seriously when they see my last name on all her docs. Maybe not so much in practice but perhaps psychologically. Thats not why we did it but it can't hurt. We both like the idea of her first name going with my mine. Don't do it for stategy but don't not do it out of concern for anything.
I agree that if she has your name it just goes that bit further with foreign embassies. My wife got a US 10 year visa on her first application and a 3 year one for Canada ( until her passport expires). I really believe applying with my last name helped in this situation.
Land purchase is not a problem, my wife has bought land in her married name. Some people are still thinking about an old law that disqualified Thai women from owning land if they were married to a farang (name change or not) That law was struck down at least 20 years ago...
-
My wife changed her name for most of the reasons listed here, easier to convince the embassies that she is my wife and will return to Thailand, hotels, airlines, credit cards, etc.
There have been times though when my wife thinks that when people see she has a farang last name they charge her farang prices

Not sure I welcome the comment by CDNinkS that implies that only the unbridled supporter of salt pools knows what he's talking about and the rest of us are talking rubbish
Well Santisuk I sure hope you slather on the sunscreen when you go out because it appears you have very thin skin
I think you should go back and read my original post, because you have misquoted me entirely.

Good info there on lights guys. I need to to replace mine. When I had the pool constructed I specified LED lights, but since I knew nothing about them and was too busy with other stuff I just let the supplier supply them. Well as you already know that was a mistake. Too dim and one leaked so it is done. Will have to dig into that soon.
On another note. Cleaning of the pool. I have a pool guy who does mine twice a week for 2000B/mth. That includes 1 bag of salt and acid if required to maintain PH. He does an OK job except for one thing, backwashing. I was catching him backwashing the filter (Zeolite) about once a week. I tried to explain the function of the pressure gage to him and of course he said ok, understand. Then the next week there again is 500 gals of water going out to the ditch. Waste of water and salt. I work overseas and am away for 6 weeks at a time so I had no choice but to remove the handle from the filter to stop him doing this.

Sorry OP, you asked about overflow vs skimmer.....I missed that in my last post.
As to overflow pools there are basically 2 types. " infinitity" style and non. Then you have skimmer pools. In my opinion it really depends on personal preference and how you will use the pool. If you have kids (or adults) that like doing cannonballs into the pool then an infinity pool is not for you. The type that has grates around the entire perimeter can handle most of the high waves though. The grates are very expensive I should add, so that and the overflow tank will add to the cost. Overflow tanks I have seen are all concrete and of course positioned below the level of the pool so there is that consideration. I went skimmer as I have that before and had no problems.
One other thing that I don't believe was mentioned here is an automatic pool level maintainer. If you have an overflow pool this is standard I believe, but for my skimmer pool I missed this part in my pool construction and regret it to this day. I since purchased a wireless remote unit, but the basic ones are really trouble free (like a toilet tank float valve). Pools in Thailand can lose as much as 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch of water per day to evaporation.
Good luck and happy pool days.

Cyanuric acid is basically "sunscreen" for your pool. Sunlight destroys chlorine so the Cyanuric acid slows this down. For some reason Cyanuric acid is ridiculously expensive in Thailand. I run my pump/chlorinator for 8 hrs per day, 4 hrs in the morning and 4 hrs in the late afternoon. The chlorinator is set on 4 out of 8 and this maintains the correct chlorine level. I should add that my pool is shaded except for about 5-6 hours of the day and I don't use Cyanuric acid at all.
I agree that if people are complaining about the saltiness of your pool you must have the concentration too high. I can taste the salt in my pool, but just barely.
To the OP, Jessefrank has given you some very valuable and accurate information on pools, I agree with all his observations. There is so much misinformation out there it is good to see someone passing along useful information.

A salt water pool is a chlorine pool. What you are talking about is how the water is sanitized. Both are sanitized by chlorine, the difference being that in a salt pool the salt ( Sodium Chloride, NaCl) is converted into chlorine by a chlorinator.
In both cases you use a test kit to determine the appropriate chlorine level to maintain a safe pool. In a salt pool you adjust the amount of time/energy the chlorinator operates to maintain this level. In a manual chlorine pool you either have some sort of automatic chlorinator that injects chlorine or you manually add pucks.
In my opinion a salt pool is the only way to go, I have had both. The salt pool is FAR less trouble as once you determine the amount of time/level selection to use on the chlorinator it maintains a constant level. All you need to do is add a bag or so of salt once a month.
As to people saying they do not like the feel of a salt pool it is because they are not use to the feel of soft water. The same as people who are used to showering in hard water and when experience a shower in soft water think they can not get all the soap off themselves. The opposite is true.
So called natural pools that use different methods of sanitation ( copper, etc.) simply don't provide the required sanitation. They are banned in most western countries now.
As to Concrete vs Vinyl vs Fiberglass. Generally the reason people in western countries use vinyl over concrete is cost, as concrete is more labor intensive. I have had both. Pro's and con's to both. Vinyl liners generally have a life span of about 10 years, depending on many factors. Care needs to be taken with any kind of sharp objects ( dog nails, cleaning tools). In Thailand with the lower labour costs concrete/tile is my preferred choice.
No experience with fiberglass pools, however fiberglass boats I have had are prone to fading and oxidation which affects appearance.
So, for me (in Thailand) a concrete/tile, salt water pool is the only choice.

NAme and shame please ? forget the stupid rules, tell us where not to go !
You don't know how much I would love to do that, but the mods have it clear they will delete the post if I do and most likely ban me to boot.

Simple rule...Try NOT to pay for anything/goods or services you have not received
If you have to pay something, keep it to the bear MINIMUM
If the supplier does not agree WALK AWAY
Yes, lesson learned. I was taken in by the swank website and the fact it was a farang.
I have made a complaint with the Consumer Protection Board, let's see what happens there.
I was cheated by a farang also, not a Thai. I hate these money-grabbing thieves who leave their country thinking it is easier here to cheat people. Beware of farangs!
Yes, everyone warns us about the Thai's, when really it is the farang we need to be the most wary of. His Thai wife has apologized to my wife for her husbands behavior and admitted that this is quite a common occurrence with them.

It was a 30,000 baht deposit, so yes quite substantial.
As I've said previously the mods have made it clear that to not run afoul of the libel laws here in LOS that I can't name the shop. Suffice it to say it is a well established shop run by a farang and his Thai wife. You will need to PM me if you need more info than that.

Whenever buying any products, whether be just the deposit, money is never refundable. Any receipt I've ever gotten in Thailand, whether Makro, Tesco, Index, major shopping centers, Independent Retailers, written in big letters across the bottom is "Non-Refundable". Also unless you catch the damage or defects prior to leaving the store, there's no exchanges.

I took a toolbox back to HomePro the other day after got it home and played with it and noticed it broken....they swapped it.
i think you should at least pin point what area the shop is, and give a few subtle clues to it's identity
How sad is this really....consumer protection my arse.
Yes, things are changing in Thailand, there are a few of the larger chain stores that now stand behind their products, I too have been able to return defective products to Home Pro for one.
When my wife had the occasion to visit the US last year I made the mistake telling here that you can return anything and get your money back. Target and Walmart knew us by name by the time we left, she would buy stuff and then take it back just because she could

I would love to, but I have been informed by the mods that would violate the forum rules against "name and shame"
I don't think there is any rule against someone PMing me to ask though

Apples and oranges I'm afraid. What you are referring to is when you have actually received the goods. Unless you missed the point I have paid for 50% of nothing at this point, so this is fraud at best, theft at worst.
-
Well at this point they are still saying they will deliver. I have since found out that some customers have waited a year for things from this shop.
-
I agree 50% seemed high, but I was trusting as this appeared to be a quite old and established business. Don't be fooled by appearances and swank websites.
-
There is a Thai consumer protection board. I used them when I had a complaint against 2 companies making polo shirts and they helped, albeit a little slow
Ok, good to know about that, thanks.

I recently entered into a contract to buy some custom made furniture. The stated delivery time was 3 months from the time a 50% deposit was made ( Aug. 25). At the 3 month point, no furniture. At the 4 month point, no furniture, many excuses and promises but no furniture. Finally was received a confirmed promise that the furniture would be delivered NO LATER than Jan 31. When that deadline came and went I contacted the supplier and asked to cancel the order and requested a refund. Was told the deposit was non-refundable. When I suggested that I would take legal action to recover the deposit I received a 3 word reply " OK, good luck"
I would suggest to all that if you enter into such a contract that you insist that if the furniture is not delivered on time that you have it in writing that your deposit will be returned.
I was foolish to trust this shop.
