  1. No doubt some will always enter this industry. However, if you asked how much salary per month they would "quit" for, I wonder how high it would be.

    50k, 80k, 100k?????

Thus, they aren't doing for "pleasure" of the job, but the money, but then how many people work for the pleasure of the job????

Not me I just work for the money licklips.gif We are talking about the 'social security' system of SEA here and also a country that cannot even enforce people wearing helmets on the roads. Nothing is going to change too fast.

  2. Welcome to reality of life, may be she should ask other nationals in Thailand how THAI immigration is treating them.

Thai immigration is a picnic compared to the pompous, narcissistic 'UK Border Agency', acushla. Last time I returned they tried to stop me re-entering (I'm a British citizen) because they didn't like some of the places I'd been to, or my reasons for going to them. I just walked past them. They can't stop me entering my own country.

British Immigration laws are among the toughest in the world, and the borders are staffed by clueless, jumped-up little pen-pushers who think they've got a bit of power.

Beg to differ on the first bit about them being among the toughest in the world. You are quite correct on the last part though

  3. Just to draw lessons from this and food for thought, my understanding is that nobody can withold your passport, unless it is by court order. The passport you hold does not belong to you, it is the property of the respective Government. If anyone witholds your passport, inform the embassy at once. It belongs to them, they will get it back.

Try going through the border at Maisai on a visa run and keeping your passport. The Burmese Immigration keep it until you return through on your way back into Thailand, which may be up to a week later. If you don't hand it over you won't be allowed in so what are we supposed to do; call the British Embassy in Rangoon?

all that "passport belongs to the government" is rubbish not applicable except it applies (to my best knowledge) only to one country, namely The British Empire. passports are confiscated and held till a certain problem is resolved a zillion times every day by authorities and private parties and no embassy will lift a finger to recoup one. period!

Bit of a history / geography lesson for you. The british empire was not a country, it was a number of countries comprising roughly one fifth of the worlds population at the time. Britain is not a country it is a nation. British passports are the property of the british government not the holder. Inside it states that they should not be given to anyone. They only reason passports are held is because the holder is stupid enough to hand it over, it is illegal to hold one in most countries even thailand (where you are required to keep it on you at all times :)).

  4. So let me get this straight . When the missus(Thai) and i move back from the uk next year she'll be able to import her 7 year old Lexus RX 300. Any idea of how much it'll cost in import tax and registering?? Is it a viable option, or is it better just to flog it before we leave and buy when we arrive??

Bring it!! and quick before they change the rules. The vehicles we drive here are crap. Even the ones they say are assembles overseas, they may be right, but they meant China. The panels, if sanded down to bare metal and measured with a veneer gauge, it's about 20% thinner than it's EU counterparts. I wouldn't trust any Audi or Volkswagen that's made in China either. Might as well just buy a thai-made Camry.

They are all built to specification for the countries they are to be sold in. I think the australian ones are the highest spec you can get. I know that the ones exported from Thailand to the UK are a higher spec because they do not meet safety standards there as sold in Thailand.

  5. Toyota Australia have just announced 350 job losses at their manufacturing plant here; high Aussie dollar, falling sales. Didn't mention other countries charge 200 % import duties crushing any chance of export. Meanwhile a vehicle produced in Thailand could be exported to Australia with nothing like that kind of duty charged.

    Life is unfair, so what.

You want same same both ways.

Oz come to Thailand no need visa. The reverse is not true.

You still want same same both ways?

No life can be fair, though 200 % import duties make it less fair.

We do need a visa which can be obtained on arrival.

    Thais can become Australians.

Most people need a visa to get into Australia including most commonwealth countries, why should Thai's be so special.

I think the visas granted in most western countries are far fairer, longer and useful than those granted by Thailand.

Having it both ways would be fine by me. Last time I was back in the UK there were more than a few Thai companies under 100% ownership that even owned property. Try that in Thailand!

  6. quote

"Thailand is far from alone in not allowing foreigners to buy land. This is common in many poorer countries as well as some rich ones such as Switzerland."

A false analogy. Reasons are totally different. Do your research before finding "feelings" to apologize for which there is only one word: xenophobia.

LMAO ... and the research you came up with to determine it is xenophobia ... the curmudgeons

    on Thai Visa?

Also, I didn't give a reason but when it comes to less developed and poorer countries it is about not inflating the cost of land beyond the reach of locals ... plain and simple.

Nonsense, when the cost for some land and properties already is as if they were located in the west, the protection is for the rich thai only, not the poor.

The chinese thai's don't like the idea of competion from us. Hell we might even mix with the natives and send the kids to university.

Then they would have to think of another law to stop them being MP's.

  7. The rest of the spec seems OK, if somewhat over the top, apart from the water cooler. Water and electrics dont mix in my book. Your fans will do the job fine.

The problem is this "Intel Core i7 2600K Overclocked 4.20GHz Per Core CPU" (normal is 3.4GHz) which could potentially be a problem under full load. The case only has two 120mm fans, the overclocked CPU and the video card and it may get pretty warm in the case. If the case can support more fans than I would add them.

Agree that Sata III drives in RAID configuration for the data work would give a pretty high performance level. I assume you will be running a x64 bit OS or else that amount of memory won't help in a x32 bit system.

Thanks for the advice. Out of country at the moment but will move forward with it when I return.

  8. <P align=left>I want to build a HD video editing PC for use with Adobe Master Suite CS5. Completly lost with all the tech stuff so I had a look what is on the net. Came up with this, anybody got any thoughts / suggestions:

    2 x 120mm Standard Case Fans

Intel Core i7 2600K Overclocked 4.20GHz Per Core CPU

Corsair H70 Hydro High Performance CPU Water Cooler

    16GB (4 x 4GB) Mushkin PC12800 1600MHz DDR3 Ram (Would it be worthwhile putting 32GB inside)

    120GB Ultrafast Sandforce SSD

    2000GB SATA II

LG Blu Ray Writer & DVD +/- Rewriter

Quiet Sony 24x Dual Layer DVD +/- Rewriter (Do I really need two rewriters)

    2 Front + 4 Back Ports

    2 x USB 3.0 Ports

  9. Anybody who is based in Thailand, be very weary if you consider buying a Sunnto dive computer from this group of companies, from personnel experience I would strong suggest that you do not:-

    http://www.divesupply.com/

    http://www.samuidivesupply.com/

    http://kohtaodivesupply.com/

    http://www.kohchangdivesupply.com/

They are the local distributor for Sunnto here, however they do not honour the limited 2 warranty offered by Sunnto in other parts of the world. They provide a rather shoddy local quick fix service.

Basically, my Cobra 2 went back to them after the backlight stopped working and the air integration kept locking up, it was with them for a period of 7 weeks. It was then returned with them stating they could find nothing wrong with it! After 3 more dives it is now not reading depths correctly and calculating O2 pp's incorrectly (alarm going off at 16m when diving on EANx 36% @ 1.4pp setting).

Unfortunatly for me it is shortly to become a very expensive paper weight or doorstop. I will be contacting Sunnto direct to express my disappointment - but do not hold out much hope and have heard Uwatec provide much better after market support.

    Be warned!!!! :)

  10. Thanks Loong, how is your health? the reason I ask is I have not felt so good (physically) for many years. Today I actually felt like going for a jog! :)

It didn't get past a thought tho. :D

I still wake in the mornings with a nasty hangover feeling without the headache. Wonder what that is.

    33 days today for me.

    Take care buddy.

How do you feel better physically? Very interested to hear that :D
