  1. Went there yesterday and had a very pleasant lunch. Tender ribs that fell off the bone, followed by a very decent interpretation of a Philly cheesesteak - maybe not up to Roadhouse standards but better than, for example, Bully's.

Have to agree with the comments on the coleslaw - tasted more salty than anything. Not coleslaw, although not bad in its own way.

Prices were a little on the high side, although no higher than most western pub-type eateries, and the only real bugbear is that the waiter brought the appetiser and main course at the same time. But then it was Christmas Day and it was probably a relatively new skeleton staff on duty - a training issue, I think.

  2. Thanks for the replies, and I will look into calling in on the IDC at some point over the 'festive' season.

My orginal post was really about places to eat that will be free of the overcrowding, price-gouging, incongruous music, decorations, drunken idiots and misbehaving Farrang kids which make Christmas so unbearable at home. Boredom really won't be a problem per se. Any ideas?

  3. Right, much to my dismay I've been given Christmas Day off :) and need to find something to do to fill the most cretinous date on the calendar. Somewhere to eat is the main priority (I've got DVDs) - preferably with minimal, or no, staff dressed in Santa outfits, incongruous songs about snow when it's pushing 30 degrees outside and, most of all, no outrageous price-gouging.

I'm thinking Soi Arab as one possibility, but is there anywhere else that's not too far off the beaten track where I'm not going to get ripped off and there isn't an overpriced turkey or a chippolata sausage in sight?

  4. today's News of the World (for the uninitiated, it's a particularly high-brow British newspaper :) ] is tipping a group of Far Eastern businessmen to buy Manchester United

    Read all about it

Now obviously it's probably cobblers, given the source and the fact that the newspaper seems to think Bangkok is in China, but any thoughts on who it could be? Maybe Sondhi's planning to change the redshirts into yellow shirts....

  5. Hmm, hailing a cab is, in my experience, the easy part. Getting them to go where you want them to can be somewhat harder, whether due to the stubborness alluded to in the article, or just their general lack of knowledge of the city they supposedly serve. Some of them want to take you where they want to take you and don't really care where you want to go - the number of times I've sat in a cab listening to a cabbie ask if I want boom-boom, yaba or a trip to the seafood restaurat on Petchaburi Road as I've tried to direct them the mile or so to my office is shocking. As another example, on various occasions when I've been to the Chinatown/Grand Palace/Khao San area, I've asked for a cab to MBK (to connect to the Skytrain) and been told 'very traffic' or 'no can' until eventually someone's taken sympathy on me. Yet when I went to the Khao San to meet a female friend who was passing through town we couldn't walk down the street without 20 offers of a trip to MBK - 'very good shopping for lady'.

That said, the cab are an absolute steal price-wise and the drivers (apart from a couple of rip-off merchants who assumed I'd fallen off the last banana boat and didn't think I'd notice being taken half way around town for what should be a five-minute trip) are a hoot - real characters, even if we don't share more than a few words of language. The Isaan music and taxi-radio is a fun listen, even if you've got no idea what it's all about.

All in all, in the long, long litany of things that are wrong with Bangkok, taxi drivers are well down the list - and they do give the city some added character.

  6. Well, it seems Khun Robson's managerial career is following its usual trajectory!

But result apart, a thoroughly enjoyable evening out in the company of some very passionate Thai fans who created a great atmosphere in support of their team.

In terms of getting there, I took some advice from Google and got a cab from Thong Lor - no great problem, Ekkamai would've been better still.

Coming back no sign of a taxi for about an hour and even then the driver had to be bribed to take me back to Sukhumvit, but no big worries. Thoroughly reccoment a Thailand game to anyone - quite a few groups and individual farrangs, who were given a warm welcome by the locals.

  7. Great news - thinking of going to the reverse fixture at Rajamangala National Stadium on Wednesday. Does anyone know if I'll be able to get a ticket on the day? Also any tips for getting there (non-driver) I know it's miles from the Skytrain etc but is there any public transport?

  8. Good to see the best bar in Bangkok again getting some well-deserved promotion. Can I respectfully suggest that if the OP is so concerned about the flouting of laws in Bangkok's bars that he stays away from Nana, Cowboy, Patpong etc, where a far more heinous criminal activity is regularly ignored by the BiB.

  9. I think the shop is called "i27" or something like that. It's at mbk on the fourth floor (I think). But they have a decent selection of games and they are all legitimate versions, some are even imported. I bought Warcraft there

Yes, 127 will have it, but likely not until some time after the 'official' release out West. There is also a downloadable version on the 'Steam' system, which is a rip-off and a pain in the backside, by my experience. Sadly the pirates will have first dibs, and at about a third of the usual price

  10. Hello,

Is there any website in Thailand that let you to order online and they deliver your food

some thing like, Pizzahut or dominos

and i would know does Pizzahut or dominos exist in Bangkok ? if they exist , is it possible to order online ?

    thanks

If you are in Bangkok, www.foodbyphone.com and www.chefsxp.com serve a variety of restaurants. Food by Phone prices are marked up, however, quite heavily. XP, I think, may have a sister service in Pattaya?

Never seen Dominos here, but I think there's Pizza Hut

  11. Evidently he sacked Thailand, though the Thais naturally and predictably want to pretend they sacked him. I wonder if there was any truth to the allegation that Reid had not received his salary for 3 months...

That certainly wouldn't be a surprise, considering he didn't even have the right visa when he forst started working here. My understanding also, and I may be wrong is that the English FA may well have been funding part of the salary, not sure if there is any truth in that though.

The visa comes as no surprise, But why on earth would the fa fund part of his salary? as you say I cant really see it.

The English FA has part-funded the national coaches of Thailand for several years, I understand, which is why the likes of Reid and Peter Withe have been brought in. It's part of their commitment to developing the game in the third world (not to mention vote-buying for the World Cup bid). Apparently Bryan Robson is the new man, bringing his unique ability to the Land of Smiles and, no doubt, a welcome boost to the troubled licensed industry in this country.

  12. Hi all, after a year in Bangkok, I'm giving up my apartment, in part 'cause it's too expensive, in part because I'm back in the UK for several weeks and am loathe to pay for it to be empty.

I'm back in mid October and looking for possibilities for apartments that'

I can rent on a one-to-three month basis (I may be moving again in the near future and can't commit for any longer)

Are priced at, at most 20,000 baht p/m, preferably (considerably) less

have the usual amenities - cable, internet, fridge, air-con etc and (must!) have a bathtub

Pref on/around Sukhumvit from Asoke up to, maybe, Ekkamai, butwould consider other areas as long as they have reasonable access to Khlong Toey area (where I work)

Would seriously consider a services apartment (for the right price)

anybody with any suggestion - inc agents etc touting for business! - feel free to message me. I'll probably stay in a hotel for my first week or so back so won't be looking in earnest until week comencing Oct 19

  13. Sam Mig, Soi 8 offers some good food. I wouldn't strictly judge it on it's burgers - which I myself do not like from there. Plenty of other things on the menu that are fine.

Yes good, plentiful pub food, a nice atmosphere, friendly staff, smoking area outside (and occasionally in), no 'pretend' Aussie/British/Irish/American theme, family friendly and, best of all, no prostitutes hassling you (or sexpats hunting them). Only had the BBQ once and it was very decent (once you'd fought past the English teachers....) and the pub in Bangkok I most highly reccomend

  14. What a waste of money the way Thailand's going Bangkok will be empty soon!!!! :)

should be looking at Cambodia and Vietnam!!!!!

    good bye Thailand!!!!!

Difference is that Paris has a good, integrated public transport system right the way out to the suburbs, which is more affordable and more convenient than driving. That might be a good start

  15. Thank Christ for that - went to Coyotes for my Mexican fix this week. Very nice place and good staff, but outrageous prices - 70b plus Vat for the smallest coke you've ever seen, and the food was no more than average.

  16. Dear friends and costumers,

Tacos & Salsa will be close for this wee and re-open next week,

I hope to see you there and party again. We are working for to get you a much better place for you comfort, you will be happy about this.

    Warm regards

    Jorge Bernal

    Tacos & Salsa

Hi Jorge - is your new location open yet?

  17. FoodbyPohne - used once, huge mark-up on restaurant prices, wouldn't touch with a bargepole

ChefsXP - use probably once a week, a good and already improving service, courteous, extremely quick. Obviously show some flexibility as well - officially open until 10.30pm but handles Sunrise Tacos online orders all night

    There really is no comparison

  18. Hello Roy, since I started the thread I'd better pitch in with some comments;

As others have mentioned, the site is glacially slow, a problem exentuated by the constant flickering of the big 'hot movies' box in the middle and the ever-present video box below.

The basic movie showtimes is much harder to navigate than it was before. There are an array of options, but who needs 'em? You just want to see what's on at the movie theatre you're going to or search for a particular film by time. I often find that when I open the 'box' for a particular cinema it will start closing and opening quickly - too quickly to actually see anything. There is no longer a list of movies that are on (somewhere) so you can see if there's anything unusual on you can go and see.

Perhaps my biggest gripe is the way the Coming Attractions section now works. For me, it's been rendered unusable. For a start, according to your sight there's nothing opening between now and July9 - which I doubt :) . But this section used to be a fairly straightforward list of films opening with the dates next to them. It was 'at a glance' so you didn't need to go flicking through page after page. You thought 'right, I really want to see -say - Slumdog Millionaire' - when is it on and looked down the list. Now I'm prepared to believe that some people think 'right, I really must go to the flicks in the week beginning November 23, let's see what's opening' but I don't think that's the typical reaction.

Can I respectfully suggest that you have a very simple, and very good, business model. You provide valuable information. That's it. Anything else is just window dressing. If you've got resources, put it into making sure you've got the widest possible range of information. Design should be about simplicity, which is what you had before. Sometimes in design, less is more - and this is a classic example.
