  1. I have no doubt that in some industries this is government intrusion.

But flying is a serious business. Rules change. Routes change. Airworthiness directives are issued. The periodic recertification includes a physical, not at all limited to a vision and cardiac test. It includes some flying to be sure the pilot still has the coordination and skill. It includes class time and a written test.

Not everyone passes it, and those who don't shouldn't be flying passengers.

    Exactly.

Why wouldn't you keep current unless you have something to hide.

eg try to ensure that, on your death, you have no UK assets that would require UK probate in order to be passed to your heirs. Not needing a UK will or any UK based executors (or advisors) will considerably reduce any leverage HMRC might have incl over any of you non UK based assets.

Would assets deposited in the Channel Islands or IOM require a UK probate?

I am more familiar with the situation in jersey, not really sure about the others. As far as Jersey is concerned my understanding is that it depends on whether the deceased was domiciled in the UK and had a UK will; lf they had a UK will (and UK assets) then i believe the Jersey courts would need to see that UK probate has been granted first before they will grant. If the indevidual had not been domiciled in the UK and had no UK will (or assets) then my understanding is that a letter from a lawyer confirming there was no need to obtain probate in the UK is sufficient.

    Thanks for this.

I have tried to simplify my affairs as far as possible but HMRC, as the OP has stated, make it deliberately difficult.

My main assets are in Channel Islands and IOM with small current accounts only in UK and LOS. I have a UK will with a UK based executor.

I had hoped that it would make things as easy as possible for my executor and keep everything out of the hands of HMRC.

    Thanks for the replies.

  4. There is a variation on the typical skimmer scam mentioned in the OP.

They actually watch you (either physically, or with a camera) before the skimmer is attached. If they score your PIN number, they will quickly attach a skimmer to the ATM (possibly a second person involved) and then chase you waving a 100, or 1,000 baht note at you saying "mister, mister, you leave money in machine, here is your 1,000 baht. Maybe you better check your balance and make sure everything is OK'". This way they aren't chasing everybody with a possible low strike rate, they only follow up if they've got the PIN.

Of course, you stupidly insert your card, make sure they can't see your PIN, and check your balance. Surprise surprise....no problems, but they had the skimmer inserted and now have the card details as well as the PIN.. Been there, got the T -_shirt. Of course when I used the machine the first time I checked for skimmers as is my habit. On the 2nd time, was a bit confused and forgot my usual routine.

I would advise everyone to remember this posting. Forewarned is forearmed.

Luckily for me someone posted a warning about this xxxx a couple of years ago so that when it was tried on me at a K-Bank ATM in Soi BuaKhao about 18 months ago I was not taken unawares and just walked off with the guys 1000 baht.

About 6 months ago I was making another withdrawal at the same machine. Just as the cash was being dispensed, a hand reached round and tried to press the cancel button. I pocketed the cash and the card and turned round to confront the guy (not sure if it was the same guy but he was also of 'middle-eastern appearance') who jumped on his scooter and shot off. There was another guy standing there who was probably his accomplice.

    Be careful out there.

  5. All I say is think again.

Best do it by swift transfer in GBP so it gets exchanged in Los

I think that the question the OP is asking, is this a better way to do it than using a currency trading company? Which gives a better exchange rate?

I, too, am interested in the answer.

the bank is a per se currency trading company wink.png

i believe that mentioned SWIFT transfer the best and easiest way to send/convert such larger sum safely.

This long thread has turned into a repetition of posts advising the use of a SWIFT transfer bank to bank for funds.

This may be the simplest way to do it but does it give a better exchange rate than using a specialist currency trading company???

This, I believe, is what the OP was asking.

"Can anyone advise whether BBL are still diverting inward Sterling transfers through their London branch where they deduct a fat charge and delay the transfer by several days?

This issue came up 2-3 years ago when a BM who was a senior member of BBL management intervened and got one such charge re-imbursed for me. Unfortunately, this guy seems to be no longer a BM.

I have asked the question in a BBL branch but they did not understand the issue."

Can anybody answer this question for me?

There must be many Brits here with BBL accounts who are transferring Sterling from a UK bank. I advise them to check their transfers to see whether BBL are still carrying out this practice. Hopefully, BBL have changed their ways but I should be grateful if anyone can advise.

    Thanks.

  7. The point is I was transferring Sterling (in Sterling) and quoting the BBL Bangkok SWIFT address. It was BBL's decision to route through their London branch thereby deducting a large fee (over £60), over and above the sending bank's £20 charge, and delaying the transfer.

Consequently, I opened an account with Kasikorn and have been happily transferring funds with just an approx. THB1,000 charge and next day value.

Reason for my question is that BBL have just opened a branch close to where I live and it would be convenient to bank there if they have discontinued their, dishonest in my opinion, practices.

  8. Hi,

  9. Just click on "View new content" again and you will get the list of the latest topics again.

    George,

Thanks for this but, after reading a particular thread in 'new content', I want to return to the 'new content' list to select another thread to read. This is done on other boards by one click on the browser back button. This is where the googleleads get in the way on TV.

No problem, I'll live with it!

  10. You can do it manually by clicking on the Forum tab at the top of every page.

Alternatively there is a quick navigation tool at the top and bottom of each page which bypasses the need to go to the index page each time.

Thanks but the problem is when I have searched by new content and am reading the various selected threads. After reading a particular thread I want to return to the page of new threads to choose the next one to read and that is when the googleleads show. The Quick Navigation tool goes to the forum headings and not back to the new content.

As I said, it is not a big problem but is certainly a nuisance.

    Thanks.

  11. I sent this query to the support desk:

When I backtab after reading a forum thread I get multiple

    > http://googleleads.g...t/page listed. This is a nuisance rather

    > than a problem but I would like to get rid of it. This does happen

    > occasionally on other websites but more often on TV.

    >

    > Is it caused by my browser settings? I'm running IE9 under W7.

    and received this reply:

You should never ever use the back button in your browser on a forum.

    Use the menu navigation instead.

I couldn't find menu navigation so sent the further query:

Thanks for your reply but please help an old man - where do I find menu navigation on the page?

No reply to this - can anybody else help???

    Thanks.
