  1. ya you should buy some real estate in yangon, laos real estate prices in downtown vientiane have tripled in past 10 years, amid global turmoil too. Something I'd look into right now if I had the $

The global turmoil as you call it is more a Euro/America turmoil, caused by banks lending money they havent got to people who bought over priced property with money they could never pay back once the ponzi scheme reached its peak, aswell as govts. creating non jobs in the govt/public sector with lottery winning esq remuneration and pension schemes and borrowing money they can also never pay back without inflating it away as theyre trying to do.

But with all the natural minerals Burma has, and the potential to become the new mass tourist destination in SEA aswell as masses of cheap labour to create jobs for, why or why is the best thing you can come up with being "buy property" and create conditions where the working folk of Burma are thus exploited by parasitic buy to let landlords as opposed to being oppressed by vile dictators.

Until westerners can pull their brains out their ass and stop thinking buying property is the worlds best investment we dont stand a chance.

So if your head is not up your ass then tell us what your way of investing would be?

  2. Chiang mai, thai islands, southern vietnam, Burma is opening up at the moment too and you might want to check that out, would be a good place to be for a photographer i reckon as it opens up.

Stay the hell out of northern vietnam, worst experience of se asia in my experience.

  3. The general attitude of Thai toward foreigners is all because of hollywood.

When Thais watch foreign movies, all foreigners are young, beautiful and rich. But the ones they get are old, ugly and poor.

For them, all foreigners are hi-so. Unfortunately the ones they got are not up to their expectation.

They have the feeling to have been cheated.

That's the best point of this thread, so far.

  4. Mrman, Just after checking the moxtravel fares there and on a like for like basis they actually come out cheaper for ba flights than the ba website (www.ba.com) itself! They seem to be reliable anyway based on the comments here. However I don't have a thai bank account, but there does seem to be an option for international bank transfers. That could take up to a week to clear though, but I'll bear it in mind anyway if I cannot find a more convenient alternative.

smokie, I have been asked before (and there are others on other forums I've seen) for the cc used in making booking, hence my concern. I was thinking maybe a faxed copy of the new card would work, if requested at check-in because I read about someone who got around it that way.

It really comes down to the clerk at check-in, because the cc companies when investigating fraudulent payments will interview and possibly hold responsible the clerk in question if card not presented. So a paper copy might work, with my old card for backup and explanation.

By the way mrman, is it possible to pay moxtravel in cash anywhere? They say bank transfer, but could you just rock up at one of those banks with a/c details and cash in hand and pay?

  5. Not sure what kind of credit card you have. I had one expire on me years ago in BKK. I called them and they sent a replacement (new) card by registered mail to my hotel at the time ... had it within 24 hrs.

Not an option on the card I have unfortunately. My bank will only send to address on cc account, not abroad to temporary address. I could ask somebody to courier out the card (because a new card has already been issued to that address) but that's taking a chance nobody gets their hands on it before I do, and it would take at least 1 week to get here.
