I don't know if it's the case but in the news photos I saw, it looked more as though the tree had brought the power lines down and it was the concrete pole  holding the power lines that fell on the motorcyclist. On the news they had a squashed motocycle under a power pole.

Sure but the "catalyst" was the falling tree.

I have changed my seats many times when traveling long haul and the plane wasn't full.

I have never been asked by the crew to not do so, even when I am stretched out across four seats for a sleep..

At a time when they are under public scrutiny, I would have thought United could have done a far better job of resolving this issue.

Presumably you moved within your booked seating class and didn't decide to upgrade yourself (like these two love birds)? They had moved into economy plus and fallen asleep, thats the difference.
Sound like a couple of chancers to me. You don't just upgrade yourself on a plane based on there being avaible seating in the more expensive seats. No, nobody does that!

The reference to these guys being tourists, or foreign thieves gives the totally wrong impression. These guys are not here traveling, or even 'visiting' they are professional even if low level thieves. Giving this story the headline Tourist Thieves is very misleading.

The wording of the title is absolutely correct. They are foreign "tourist thieves" meaning they are not Thai and caught in the act of stealing. So "tourist thieves" works.  From the CCTV we cannot determine if they derive most of their income from stealing, which is what "professional" means. So your suggestion of the word "professional" would be less appropriate.

Professional - engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as a pastime.

  4. Thailand's has strict hierarchical structures in every area of life from socializing to the work place, even the bar staff. Someone who recently joined the company will be walking on egg shells. I've seen 3 year olds being taught to Wai 4 year olds. its very much a "Know your place" kind of culture. Thailand can be a brutally violent place for anyone who dares to criticise, even if its for constructive reasons. When people seem to be overly ingratiating by western standards I think they are going out of their way not to offend. Its just became an inherent cultural trait.

Reminds me of the Chris Rea song "The road to Hell".

And the perverted fear of violence
Chokes the smile on every face

  5. This train stops and accelerates quickly before people (mainly tourists) have been able to find a seat. The safety of this part Kanchanaburi railroad and maintenance of wooden bridges is awful. The article mentions only the Christian names of the victim, not the family name. Again a total unnecessary horrible accident in a country where safety standards are not met. Railway of Thailand should be ashamed of themselves. And TAT keeps shouting their positive forecasts.

i dont think your comment is fair ''yet'',yes standards here are poor, but in some cases the tourist is to blame...unless you know some facts we are not aware of..cheers

The fact that there have been 3 incidents this months (and I quote) "The incident was the third involving the Thonburi-Nam Tok train in a month.

This may point to there being a safety concern with this train service.

If safety was a priority then there should be no normal circumstances where a father with his family could be killed using this transport. When I say "normal" i mean getting on and off the train etc. I doubt very much there was any unusual activity being performed by the man. So it is fairly safe to assume the safety of the service is in question here.

  6. Was in Phuket for the footy 7s last weekend a Farang took a battering in Bangla road on Saturday night. It looked like he'd given one of the ticket sellers a slap , I just saw about 10 Thais , men and women steam into him. I was with my 13 year old son , so I dragged him out of the way. When I turned around the Farang was up and was holding his own and it got broken up pretty quickly. What shocked me was the glee and ferocity the Thais steamed in with, looked like they were revved up waiting to steam into someone

Maybe the Thais are finally getting sick and tired of the foreigners bad behavior. Sounds like this guy was,nt too bright. Lucky he was not killed.

Thai sycophant. A crime has been committed and you automatically take the side of the perp based on race and the victims perceived writing ability?

  7. The Black Death was one of the most devastating pandemics in human history, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 75 to 200 million people and peaking in Europe in the years 1346–53–

It looks like nature has its own recipe to get rid of people in overpopulated areas ignoring all hygienic standards.

Hence, LOS as a hub of these standards is safe.whistling.gif

You say "Nature" but some of the most recent outbreak could have more sinister origins. Some of the reports about HIV and Ebola raise a lot suspicion, they come from the same place in Africa. Its certainly fair to say that certain fractions are looking at ways to deduce populations. Its worrying to imagine what they'll come up with.

Whats frightening about it in Thailand is the personal health standards. Not just cooking but the way people cough or sneeze in public without covering their faces, I've noticed this a lot in Bangkok and have been sprayed a few times in shopping malls. They look around as if surprised and I've never seen anyone sneeze into a handkerchief. If they ever got an airborne virus like SARS here it would spread like wildfire.

Another concern is when communal eating putting their spoon from their mouths directly into shared food dishes, rarely using a serving spoon.

On the whole Thailand is one of the cleanest places in the region and the people are very clean when it comes to personal hygiene and washing regularly. However some observed behaviour spreads germs and there is room for improvement.

  8. Should have been charged with assault and suspended without pay. The victim is defenceless, handcuffed and on the ground. The officer is scum and there is no justified excuse for his actions. Just imagine the low life scum they are going to get with conscription to the BIB

if this was the UK he would have been beaten with a baton pepper sprayed or poss tazered. All you do Gooders need to get real. He was caught redhanded this is not 2 goats in Koh Tao. Bang to rights. He deserved what he got. Personally I would have had a few of his teeth out as well. I think he got of lightly.

Totally agree, he's probably got no license, no MOT no insurance. Drives drunk and hits other cars, not stopping at the scene. Thats several year prison anywhere. Here he gets a bit of a kicking, seems appropriate to me. Drink driving is endemic here. Hundreds of innocent lives lost every year. The ends justify the means. If it serves as a deterrent to savages then its fine with me. I hope he got a further beating later.

  9. All down to lack of vehicle maintenance i reckon,ie,brake failure, more than likely a maintenance issue, maintenance is an ugly word in Thailand.

Thats certainly the drivers claim. "The driver claimed the vehicle suffered a brake failure"

On the other hand I have witnessed careless driving on more than one occasion in Thailand.

I wonder if the driver has an HGV licence to be driving a crane? Pending a full investigation, I'll keep an open mind.

  10. The Fitness First centre at Paragon is great and pretty reasonable at 2200 - 2600 per month depending on payment plan. They have personal trainers but its extra. However 3 initial classes are included plus free progress updates.

It took over from the California gym which I was also a member but this is much better. In the last 18 months I've seen great results in weight lose combined with a Low Carb diet.

It well recommended, includes towel and fitness clothing.

  11. Nice of the man in uniform to squeeze his arm to see if he was telling the truth.

Should have paid his parking fee.

If you live and drive in Thailand you should know the procedure.

If he was back at home he would be looking at a 3000 baht fine.

Nonsense. Show me a case where a 70 year old man had his arm broken and car smasked for the equavalent of 40baht "Back home"???

In tourist destinations its important to have good clear signage and even a little English from the staff. This is the way to enforce and fees fines, violence is not acceptable...Thai sycophants strike it again.

  12. Scapegoat or not...remains to be seen. Thai Police can't be trusted in most of the cases, agreed. But so much hatred and bitterness towards Thai people in general in this topic.....unbelievable. It really makes me wonder what are you still doing in this country.

Fail to see your logic. This is a particularly gruesome murder and emotions run high, the process and outcome of this investigation stink of corruption. The bitterness you complain of is mostly directed at the handling of the case rather than Thai people in general. What you are saying is, if people don't like they should leave Thailand?

  14. The extensions is for one year.

If you don;t qualify for the extensions you can go to Laos for single entry, or Penang for multiple.

Sorry I must have phrased that wrong becuase I'm sure I can't get a years extension. The visa I have is a "one year Non-B multiple entry". My stamp for Thailand expires this Friday Oct 3rd 2014. My question is, if I go along to immigration in Bangkok what is the maximum extension period, I believe its just one month and costs 1900baht. this can vary though and I don't want to get there and be told its just 7 days or something....

    Any ideas anyone?
