  1. Hello I wonder if anyone can help? My current Non-B Immigration visa expires this Friday October the 3rd. I understand an extension is available for 1900 at immigration Bangkok. My question is, what is the most I can extend for, is it 1 month?

I really need to go to Hong Kong for work but with the current political protests I don't think I'll get much done. Ideally I'd like to wait for things to blow over and don't fancy a pointless flight to Singapore or somewhere, just for a visa stamp.

Last year I did the Kanchanaburi visa run which was great from Bangkok but now thats closed.

Any info on extensions suggestions for visa runs from Bangkok?

  2. The first car buyers programme was always going to end in disaster. There will be 50,000 - 100,000+ defaulters in this scheme

If only 500 defaulted it is a rousing success not a disaster. Better check your math.

Indeed, only 0.05% defaulted and over 1 million cars are sold. The only negative effects are that the prices on the 2nd hand market are down and after the promotion the car sales are lower than normal.

Agreed and with regards to the 2nd hand car market....not in itself a bad thing as second hand cars here are terribly over valued.

The people I have spoken to in Bangkok have said that the increase in cars has caused more traffic in Bangkok.

  3. that means it was a big succes if only 500 people do not meet payments....

they have sold hundred thousands of cars.

    again big succes!

A success for who ?? the poor ?? government ??? thousands of cars on the market, could bring down second hand prices though.

    you name it,

    the poor,

    the first car owners.

the manufactures of the cars and the workers,

    the cars sellers and staff.

    the oil compagnies

    the insurance compagnies

    etc etc

What I think the poster means is that 0.05% is statistically a very small amount of customers defaulting.

  4. What I found strange is why those people are chosing Thailand....In Europe and the US any ATM machines probably hold a lot more money than here to get in a single withdraw....May the Thailand's ATM be easier to skimm?

Yes agreed, the ATM security must be more vulnerable becuase this is quite a frequently reported crime in Thailand.  Either that or there isn't as much CCTV!?!

  5. Now you can see why Detroit is a Ghost Town. Greedy, Western Manufacturers are all coming to Thailand and other developing Countries, in order to take advantage of slave wages and poor worker safety standards, in order to make more profits.

You really have absolutely no idea about the automobile manufacturing industry in Thailand, do you ? The safety standards within these factories are on a par with those in the West and the wages, especially for those with a marketable skill are exceptionally good. Even the run of the mill production line operator has a fair salary, very good bonus and benefits that exceed anything they could get by working at the majority of local companies.

The statement is generally true though. We used to build cars in the UK but we can't any more becuase of the property prices. 70% of the UK land owned by less than 1%. As long as they're getting their rent they don't care if all industry just stops in the UK. and manufacturing moves to Asia. The UK needs land reform or at least land taxes.

In the bigger picture this statement is true. Its why our politicians want to push for EU membership so the 1% can profit from free market. While the country goes bust.

"We used to build cars in the UK but we can't anymore"...

It's not April 1st until tomorrow!

Jaguar/LandRover is doing very well thanks, as are many many others.

Didn't you ever watch Top Gear - where all British auto manufacturers drove to the Mall of Buckingham Palace.

You'd be very surprised at how actually successful British manufacturing still is. 3rd largest manufacturer in Europe!

    Manufacturing has moved to Asia.

UK Manufacturing is in decline, it has been for years. The cost of living, rents, taxes etc make it imposible.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/28209578

Jaguar/LandRover are owned by an Indian company. Yes they still make the cars in the UK but its curious example to provide to support the case for UK manufacturing being strong.

Yes I do watch top gear but usually not for its economic insights regarding to UK economy.

The UK is run by wealthy land owning speculators. Land is far too expensive for manufacturing, where would the workers live? Its not economically viable. The people in charge simply want people in debt, they deal, trade, short, gamble create (Help to buy) ponzi schemes using debt.

Germany still manufacturer and probably the reason for their current success.

Check out cities like Newcastle, Shefield etc. They are scary ghost towns of their former selves. Its horrible.

Atleast it's just correction pen, that you can wash away. Does anyone remember the Chinese tourist in Egypt actually scratching in his name in to the stone, that you can't wash away...

    Does pot/kettle/black seem appropriate?

    David

    You beat me to it!

The graffiti on a brick in the Chinese wall is hardly the same as what that Chinese kid did to the Egyptian Luxor temple.

  7. The irony of this topic is that Japan is questioning Thailand's credit worthiness when they themselves have been a financial basket case for 20+ years. Abenomics (QE) has reached a ridiculous level in Japan and will destroy what is left of the Yen long before the baht fails.

This was absolutely what came to mind when i read this story. Japan's Quantitative easing program is one of the biggest in the world per captor. Who are they to be casting assertion over the creditworthiness of Thailand. They are printing money like nobody else on the planet, past or present.

  9. Kanchanaburi and Ranong are probably similar distances from Hua Hin

    Are you for real??

Kan is about a little over 300 from Hua Hin and then up to the boarder in Kan about 100 odd kms or so.

So then, the total approx. would be 400 kms, whilst Ranong over 500 kms and more. Then having to catch the boat ????????????????????? kms and more.

Time is on your side, please use it well.

    Win

Yeah its "for real" this is a very useful post and includes pictures. Why jump on the 400kms - 500kms the OP states that its much easier to Kanchanaburi several times. Well done for knowing the exact kms (if they are exact) but I think you might have missed the bigger picture here. This is a very useful and informative post.

Especially with the Garmin info. Brilliant thanks very much.

New Border Crossing In Kanchanaburi open for visa runs- Ban Phu Nam Ron Ban Phu Nam Ron. The GPS Coordinates are N 13.92140 E 99.06219.

The border crossing is about 190 km from Bangkok

  10. The question not being ask is how can an M79 shoulder-held launcher can be used in the centre of a capital city like Thailand on a Sunday afternoon without someone witnessing it. Especially with the heavy Police and Military presence due to the political rallies. This has happened before recently so said government bodies should be on high alert. The fact that nobody is in custody suggests that someone from afore mentioned government body was involved or they are all completely incompetent.

Civilians shopping with their children at Big-C at the weekend should not have the threat of grenade attach.

If you can't find the culprit, disband the any Police or Military on duty that day i nthat area. As someone is covering up.

Military Coup may be the only way.

  11. It's poverty food:it uses starches, fats and sugars in place of the more expensive proteins to provide calories as cheaply as possible. And nut and egg protein too, which is cheap compared to meat.

Pizza, pasta, polenta, crostini, potatoes and corn are some European equivalents: food that appears healthy because it's low in animal fats, but in fact is quite stodgy.

i am amazed to see calories in boiled pasta without any sauce

Pasta is lethal, its full of carbs. Look what happens to middle aged Italian woman.

  12. You probably need to work on your diet mainly. Lot of good info here: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/forum/111-im-too-fat-forum/. Strongly suggest you look into low carb.

But exercise is certainly beneficial. You can get quite fit just by using bodyweight--at home. A cardio machine of some sort would be helpful. Info about buying around here: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/667934-home-multi-gym-where-to-buy/

Yeah I started the Low Carb Diet (Atkins Diet) 2 weeks ago and dropped 10kgs already. its amazing.

This is a book I managed to download, highly recommended: Why We Get Fat: And What to Do about It

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0307474259

I do an hour a day at the gym as well, mostly CV.
