Hello Rufanuf,
Where is your "reputable" law-firm based? you can PM me on this.
I have experiences same as your but I ended this relationship before I was really ripped-off
Hi,I wonder if anyone on this forum has experienced the problems we encounter almost every month with one issue or another over work permits, tax and their intertwined nature. It seems like its a fullt time job just dealing with this crap.
We started our business over a year ago and used a so called "reputable" firm to form our company and obtain our first work permits, which where temporary at the time (3 months, and have to visa run and renew work permit every 3 months).
Now when we started our firm we was assured by our reputable lawyer that the total overhead for retaining and maintaining our work permits would be in the region of 6000BHT per month per farang in the firm.
Since that time the costs have risen to something closer to 10,000 a month each, and there just never seems to be an end to taxes, govermment fees, accountants fees and lawyers fees.
What so frustrating about it all is how much we emphasised that tax overheads etc had to be as low as possible in our first few years of trading as we was a start up business. We may not have started it at all had we known the degree of hassle and expense involved that we are now aware of and all the costs associated with forming a company. We feel pretty duped by our reputable lawyer.
I just wondered what anyone else made of this breakdown in our base costs, and any how we can do away with so many fees/costs/tax.
2500BHT Monthly Accounting Fee
10,000BHT six monthly accounts
38,000BHT a year per farang lawyers fee for immigration and work permit maintenance
1500BHT a month witholding tax per farang to risw to 2500 shortly
1000BHT endless additional lawyers and government fees totalling typically 1000BHT a month (renewel of company affidavits, changing partners lists etc etc to retain and maintian work permits.
5200BHT social security (for Thais on our books) a month
To be honest I find most of it really hard to understand but the net effect of these charges is
approaching 220,000BHT a year, and as small business trying to get a foothold its pretty crippling.
I just wandered what others experiences where? The really frustrating thing about it all is that employing the services of lawyers and accountants just seems to make things more difficult and more expensive rather than easier! I think the lawyer who structured our company really screwed it up as well (we have subsequently been told that is why we are having so many problems, the structure of the business wont support two farangs in work permits).
To make matters worse our original lawyers never advised that under any circumstance we should let a work permit expire. Well I had to go to UK to renew my non Im B, and my permit expired whilst in the UK, so I wrongly believed it seems that the process would simply to be renew when I got back for another 3 month period....but instead I have had to start the process of applying for the work permit all over again, and now I am being told I will likely not get it! This is despite the fact I am MD of the business and that I have drawn a wage from the business and paid tax every single month even when in UK. Seems strange that they will take my tax but not give me a work permit.
Has anyone else been driven to distraction by these type of issues?

Yes uneducated on one point:
viruses cannot be fought with antibiotics!
What the W.H.O fears is the mutations...a bit like the drug resistant strains of malaria that are evolving along the Thai/Cambodian border at the present. The fact that some people die and some recover might suggest to W.H.O. that this virus will mutate beyond the scope of drugs that are able to deal with it. Why? Carriers. How many times have you had a flu and the anti-biotics were changed? Because the virus mutated around the anti-biotic you took before. A lot of healthy young people died in Mexico, but the virus has been less of a threat elsewhere. Viruses think! They want tosurvive...just like we do. W.H.O knows this. Hence their precautions on a global scale.
Just an uneducated guess....:-P

disagree with all complaining!
ever considered the rules when a Thai goes to Europe? Even as a tourist it is difficult to enter without....etc..
Try to see this without your personal biased view.
Apparently I am not the only one which disagree with you.

I have a Dreambox 7020Si satellite receiver, running Linux.
It is wonderful. Connects to my home LAN so files can be transfered to and from the box
and patches can be downloaded directly off the internet using the remote.
It records programmes on an internal hard disk. I have a 160Gb installed at present.
The Movie Player allows me to access and stream video from my PC for viewing on the TV.
A whole new home entertainment experience.
Anyone else using this technology? Drop me a PM or post here.
sounds interesting!
have a dreambox as well connected to te internet for ubc decoding. my supplier left me so I only use it as a satellite receiver now

Apart from price.... would it not be better to use steel (caoted or not) or copper piping for water. I think it is a no worries solution, or not?

any commercial yoghurt from tesco contains live bacteria. I prefer the plain onme for making yoghurt.
-
yoghurt
Low in protein and full of sugar (at least the yogurt they sell here). They dont have liter packages like in Holland for instance.
To the other poster about the insects.. I doubt that i am able to do that they dont look appetizing.
mix one cup of yoghurt with 1 lier of milk and you will have an excellent yogurt after overnight standing. Then put it in the fridge and eat the next day.
Putting it into cups might be easier.
Alternatively.... buy a yoghurt maker, I took one from Europe as I also hate the sweet thai yoghurt.

Travel2003 Kalasin, is a nice town, not to big and not to small, I think it would be a nicer town to live than KK. For me KK is just to big and too much traffic. Issangeorge. PS. I live in a small village in Kalasin, but the other direction from your wife's. I'm close to the Kalasin, Mukdahan, Roi-et border.
Thanks for your advice George. However, I have actually only lived in the cities of Stockholm in Sweden and Sydney in Australia and I do actually find KK a bit small. So settling in an even smaller town is not rally what I think would suite me. Thanks anyway,
Göran
Not to optimistic about social life in kk... outside bars?.... we have one quiz-night at tuesdays, i believe in Eric's bar.
Indeed, try it out and decide then.

Harry,
I'm thinking along the same lines. i.e.
Solar water heating,
Solar PV's (to run the A/C? & fridge,etc).
Small back-up generator (preferably deisel to run on cooking oil)
Heat pump rejecting heat to the pond - 8m deep (not sure if the fish would like it too much though..?)
Have you come across any info or suppliers in Thailand?
Cheers,
S
No, my plans got on a hold after my divorce where i give the 50 rai piece of land to my wife.
Another point I would like to make about this discussion:
It is really a pity that this info, because of being a discussion and statements, becomes scattered and difficultly accessible.
Maybe:
1. there is a member who want to compile and summarize it into one doc? (like someone did for permanent resident case)
2. It would also be a challenge for guys from thaivisa to make comprehensive surveys about this and other important subject. (like WIKIpedia-approach/system?)

In my planning for building a new, countryside, house I wanted to be as autarchic as possible. {You never know about an worldwide energy crisis, etc. and you can make this into a hobby as well! :-)}
So in addition to earlier suggestions ...
-solar and wind energy ( with generator backup).
-roof cooling by "water leakage" on it.
and
natural circulation of air in the house by:
1. an outside cold air reservoir in the ground with ...
2. outlet, centrally in the house (included in the ground floor concrete)
2. vents on the first floor's roof

Work permit now only granted for 3 months, before 2 times for 1 year ...why?
According to the rules/law, I read it shouldf be possible to get it for 1 year, which is the validity of my non-immigrant-B. See attachement.10_steps_to_One_Year_Work_permit_and_visa.doc
Anybody can comment on this?
thanks,
harry

In looking at agricultural production it must be remembered that the bulk of thais are subsistance farmers ,they sell what they dont need for their own consumption. this keeps commodity prices low by our standards. The temptation is always there to over capitalise eq. (pension off the buffalo and kubota and buy a 4wd tractor) .
Better farm practises is the way to go,Isaan currently produces about 1.9 tonne per hectare of aromatic rice, Vietnam is producing up to 12 tonne per hectare .
The reasons are many fold ,but the answers can be found in official govt websites but it mainly comes down to farming practises.(have your ever tried to tell a thai how to do something, they dont even listen to their own experts in their fields)
Vietnam has more than 1 crop annually....that is possibly the reason behind the yield.
2 times 1.9=3.8!
