Have you noticed locals prune trees to the extreme with no leaves remaining. We had our village done, not a single leaf on any tree. My neighbor another example. She does it once in a while. Attached photo after a week, some green stuff coming out. Question is why bother having a tree if you go Kojak on them.

They cut every tree in our village like this 3 years in a row.  Half of the trees are now dead (only stumps remaining) and the other half are clearly diseased and weakened.  Thai gardening at it's finest.

  2. We live in bass-ackward times.

Plastic bags are deemed bad for carrying your shopping home and reusing them but it is perfectly OK, and expected, to have to purchase plastic bags to pick up dogs excrement preserving it in a plastic grave which will be buried in a landfill and remain entombed for years, which if left alone would return to the earth within a few days at most.

Further proof of the lack of sense any of this makes, is the fact that people get so bent out of shape when they see dog feces but aren't bothered in the slightest with the septic waste (human excrement) from every house in the city draining into the street drains, which often flood and spreads nasty bacteria and smells, and in some villages, like the one I reside in Bangkok, the garden team uses the water from the street drains to water the public area gardens and parks where the children play and the dogs are walked.

Many things in the world we now live in are laughable due to the lack of logic applied and misguided "outrage"... 😂🤦‍♂️

Waiting for the outrage to come regarding how vile bird poop is and what over-the-top "solutions" will be devised. 😂

It's often best to just sit back and just smile at all the absurdity instead of trying to make any sense of it all. 😊

  3. Plastic is used in nearly everything today. Vehicles, computers, cooking appliances, food packages, drinks, etc... the list is inexhaustible yet we are supposed to believe that banning plastic shopping bags is going to make the difference. The Facts don't add up!

    Stop drinking the Koolaid!

I carry my Passport, Thai Car/Motorcycle Drivers License's, and my Pink Card with me wherever I go, so not too worried. I am guessing I am more legal, especially on the road, or while travelling, then most Thai's, let alone other Farang's. I use a BellRoy Passport sleeve/wallet, it keeps everything together, and I wear Prana, or North Face convertible pants all the time, so everything is securely in a hard to steal from pocket.

Your post clearly explains and supports your user name ????

  5. Land Traffic Act, B.E. 2522 (1979)
Section 34 covers private cars and mentions drivers should keep in the left-hand side lanes, except in the 5 listed situations.
Section 35 specifically applies to trucks, passenger vehicles, motorcycles, and vehicles of lower speeds and states they must keep to the curbside of the roadway as close as possible.

  6. I am surprised that anyone thinks that Thai Immigration is going to yield to pressure from the United States government. The banks here already resent the onerous reporting requirements mandated by FATCA.  We are not making any friends over here with our meddling. I would advise caution and a friendly approach to solving this. Even subtle pressure will create a perceived "loss of face" that will only worsen the situation.
It's thinking like this that slows progress. What do you suggest one do? Wait until they come to their senses somehow? The relationship between Thailand and the US dates back 200 years. I doubt "face" is an issue between the diplomats.

you are talking about "american citizens"... have you as an american ever noticed that there are actually more countries in the world outside US borders??? It feels a bit tragic when we are having topics here on Thai-VISA and all of them are talking about expats in general, you are ONLY considering US citizen and dont get a """" about the rest.

What a unnecessarily rude reply to a post that is titled "U.S. citizens: "Fact sheet" on income affidavits".

The post is obviously intended to provide specific information for "US citizens".  If it doesn't apply to you, then there is no need to comment.

I see topics on here regularly which are specific to UK, German, Australian, etc. and don't recall ever seeing an American (or any other for that matter) respond in such a rude manner.  If you are looking for "General Advice" I suggest you not bother with threads that are titled with a specific country name.

To the Op: thank you for the advice.

He gave the example of Australia where the tax was hiked every six months and where the cigarette price was now as high as A$30 dollars (Bt700) per packet

Funny how they used Australia as an example.

Some one needs to do some serious research into the negative effects the high tax on cigarettes in Australia and New Zealand is having on the crime rates.  There are frequent and violent attacks happening in the shops there in attempts to steal cigarettes.  People are getting seriously injured in these attacks.  I'm sure the illegal smuggling of cigarettes is a huge problem also.

This is the direct result of taxing a product to the extent it needs to be protected in safes and strongrooms, much like gold and diamonds.  I suspect Thailand will suffer the same consequences but probably a lot sooner than Australia and New Zealand due to the lower income rates here.

  9. Hi,

I'm from Sweden. Lived 30 years in Sweden. 6 years in Thailand.

When I buy stuff I almost always check how much I save if I buy bigger pack. This way I have discovered illogical prices frequently and constantly in Thailand.

I'm not talking about street vendors. I'm talking about the big stores.

In 7/11, Tesco, big c, makro. Etc.

For example, lay chips in 711 20THB for 53g bag and 30THB for 75g bag.

Or in Tesco one San mig Light bottle might be 38THB and 4 bottles is 159THB.

Washing deterrents often have illogical prices here too.

I know, I know, just pay attention and be happy. Ok cool. Done.

But why does this happen in Thailand and not in Sweden?
Does it say more about Sweden or Thailand?
    What does it say?
I don't think Thai people are stupid, because I never saw street vendors make this mistake.
It only happens in the big chains.
And if it's a business practice, why don't they use that same practice in the big chains in Sweden?

What is the difference? Does it say or tell anything about the cultures of Sweden or Thailand?

This obviously is intentional as I have found the same thing often. It is often cheaper to buy the individual items instead of the bulk packed items here. No need to try to "educate" the shop employees as I am sure it's intentionally done. I've shown my wife how to compare and she gets a good laugh every time she finds a "deal".
