  1. Has anyone considered that this could be the fault of the tourists? Maybe the tourists refused to pay the highway toll, because they thought that the taxi driver was cheating them. Not everyone knows that they are supposed to pay the toll themselves, and not the driver. The story about the driver missing a turn, and not wanting to turn back seems a little far fetched.

Ther is no pay toll between Suvarnabhumi and Rama 9, so that could not be the problem.

  2. I find it odd there is never mention of these boxes sending out locating signals. Surely if they found the tail section the black boxes would sending out a strong signal.

Have a look at post 3. The pics of the recorders show a small cylinder with supports at each end, this is a water activated pinger. With quite simple equipment you can located the signal from the pinger.

I understand how how they work. My point was, all the articles about this crash and said having located the plane, but there never a mention of locating or identifying the plane by its emergency locator transmitter. Is this thing not pinging away at the crash location? As far as I am aware they found this wreckage using sonar.

I have been wondering about the "good old" ELT for a while. Why is there no mention of it?

  3. Sometimes I wonder in which century we live...

Why are we always looking for a stupid Black Box (FDR & CVR) when an airplane got into some problem.

These FDR and CVR is technology of 1940's. Some of them are even based on a tape recorder!!

But yes, they are 'waterproof' and can resist a heat of 1000 Celcius. But what the heck, if we can stream in real time all data to the ground?

Currently we can and use live streaming of voice and video using TCP/IP (Internet). So, when we stream data (voice and video) in real time to a server somewhere on the ground, we are able to know exactly, what is happening in an airplane and what has happened when the airplane is gone / lost.

We deliver this kind of technology for an Air Force (cannot mention which country at this time...). Our technology makes Aircraft tracking and tracing possible in real time together with streaming of real time data to servers on the ground. Interested? Check www.sme-erp-it-consulting.com

You'd most likely get all pilot unions in the entire world into a frenzy. Interfering in their private conversations. Ouf!

  4. Regards the FDR and CVR, are these devices placed in the tail to minimize the risk of destruction based on a nose first impact? Just wondered, since they are recording what goes on in the cockpit and couldn't be further from it. Curious as to the reasoning since a lot more engineering, cabling and interfacing over a relatively long distance is needed I'd have though, where as the avionics and apparently the flight data acquisition unit are up forward.

It must be because most crashes go nose first and tail is least damaged and surely gets a lot less G's upon impact. Thinking about that, they should fit the cockpit back there as well! All avionics, recorders and even the pilots in one safe place. You could then even fit the tail with a parachute. If things get really bad, separate the tail and let it go down on the chute. As a passenger sitting up front I don't think I would fly them though...

Was that supposed to be funny?

  5. I don't mind if the taxi drivers make a little more actually. The reason why they don't want to pick people during a jam is because they can get stuck in one for a long time and only have a few baht going up in their meter.

Most of the time they are going to be stuck in traffic anyway, so why not have a passenger pay a little at least. I really failto see the logic.

  6. Trying to make sense of this post as I am not sure just what has been achieved yet apart from the public example being made of the beach vendors in Phuket. There are new traffic laws but no drive to ensure the current ones are obeyed, there are to be new alcohol rules but no drive to ensure the current ones are obeyed. The visa run thing I do understand and I think has the potential to be a good development.

These are not new alcohol rules.

They are from 2008 and are simply being enforced - finally.

I think the same goes for traffic rules.

  7. I think this clarifies yesterday's very unclear message from Hua Hin Immigration and, in regard to producing your passport, is nothing new. The new clarification just says failure to produce a passport, which I read as not having a passport - i.e. the individual is unable to produce a passport because he/she doesn't have one.

I have faith that a decent copy, showing the ID page and visa/extension stamp will be enough for a police check.

    Keep dreaming.

  8. Whatever your opinion of Thaksin may be one thing is for sure,he certainly shook the established corridors of power and changed the feeling of ''entitlement to wealth'', albeit for his own benefit since he himself felt ''entitled''. If he has one positive legacy it is that he changed the conception that the poor must always be poor and the establishment has a right to their ill gotten gains.Unfortunately for him, his own behaviour stopped him from having true greatness. He has left behind him division but that comes with change. Had he been a more humble man and truly concerned for the people he represented i think he could have done great things.

Well. He didn't, did he? And that has been obvious for years.

Another brilliant example of Thai "logic"

You both may have to adjust your expectations. Front line immigration officials will never be friendly towards foreigners. Any friendliness is looked upon by their superiors suspiciously. As if they are giving favors to the foreigner or possibly involved in bribe taking. This is what an immigration officer actually told me so unless that changes, then continue to expect to be scowled at, ordered to go get some missing document, extra letter or copy of something..

That would be a welcome change. I for one dread the annual visit to Chang Wattana immigration.

guess some people are just perfect and contribute unknown quality's to Thailand ...the key word being unknown

I for one welcome the day IMMIGRATION will be actually sorted out and they treat people with respect instead of suspected criminals...it all starts with good day how may i help you ...not what you want ..passport now! ...as happened to me yesterday

That money-making machine should be patented. They must be laughing their heads off come closing time. And when I see elderly peolple being transported there in their hospital beds, I feel sick. How humiliating.

I was once in hospital when my visa expired. As I was getting desperate, the hospital (Samitivej) kindly and efficiently arranged for an officer from immigration to come and sort out my problem. He showed up, demanded money and signatures and proceded - without asking permission - to take photos of me with tubes sticking out here and there in my sickbed. As foreigners we are expected to treat all things Thai with respect, but that seems to be a one way street.

I think it is about time that some people in this country got off their high horses and started to behave decently towards visitors to their country - tourists as well as people who live here for various reasons (as long as the reasons are valid of course).
