  1. Yes, there is a route. But as others have said, I would be extremely suprised if Myanmar is as open as some people speculate. Certain roads from certain borders may be opening up, but driving through it entirely? Doubtful. Do let us know if you find a way, a lot of people (myself included) are itching to do some motorcycle touring in Myanmar. As for eastern India, might help a bit with the permits if you buy the bike in Delhi, which is easy to do.

Ya, will post as I go. Been all over Tibet, India and of course Nepal on my Enfields, and have 10 year visa to India... riding in the Bihar and East Bengal is not as dangerous as people make out. If you speak Nepali or Hindi that helps.

  2. I haven't researched it but there are numerous pitfalls, and almost certainly prohibitive ones, all along the way, even going as a simple tourist. You would need, inter alia and without a vehicle:

    1. Plenty of money and advance permission to enter Bhutan from Nepal. Not cheap and as far as I'm aware not a route allowed to tourists.

Nepal and Bhutan has no common border so to enter Bhutan from Nepal is impossible....cheesy.gif

Well, if you look at it historically and current culturally, east bengal (Darjeeling / Gantok) was part of Nepal once, and most still speak Nepali. I ride there often just using my 10 year india visa... no problem. But Bhutan will be the nut to crack!

  3. If you want to cross Bhutan, hope you are not traveling on a budget.. :-)

I have tried to enter Tibet two times , and was turned back. Almost impossible to enter as a single biker. You need to join a tour...

Yes, that's true, as when I went to Tibet with http://www.sacredsummits.com in 2006, the bike permit was pricey, but my pal Binod Shrestha negotiated the fee down to half at least. I guess Bhutan is the same, but Rabi at Sacred Summits has pals that run KTM bike tours there, and says it's possible to get in and out (with fees of course). Myanmar is another story however, all the info I have on that is this UN map (http://www.unescap.org/ttdw/common/Maps/AH-map-GIS.pdf) and I suppose the travel rules are in flux right now.

  4. If you're a Thai woman who is interested in finding out how to date a Western Man, then you've come to the right place. Learning how to date a western man can help cut away hours of frustration and misunderstandings. Western men are just like any other man. They want unlimited sex, booze and to be respected for their voracious, Viagra fuelled appetites. Although Western men have a reputation for being fickle, selfish and generally stupid, the truth is that the average Western man seeking a Thai girlfriend also lacks morals and most values but hell, they are still human.

As you learn to date a Western man, you may be confused by a lot of their ways-probably by most of them, because they are so alien to the two and a half thousand years of culture which provided you with a tried and tested way to view the world. Many Western men are outspoken and blunt because they are notably under-educated. They like to be confronted, especially after a long period of drinking at the bar. They are not easily embarrassed by their insensitivities (what-d-I do?). This may be translated by a Thai woman as a lack of honesty or sincerity, which will most likely be the truth. Western men of the culture which seeks a Thai girlfriend believe that it is better to say something negative or hurtful than say nothing at all

Western men usually drop their conservatism when they reach the kingdom because they are either sexual rejects by sensible women in their own culture, or they have been ejected from a failing marriage and so they lose the filter for decency that underpinned their upbringing. The average western man will sleep with you on the first date. It is considered a very good thing for a western man to be seen as sexually promiscuous. He will receive much approbation and back slapping from his expat buddies.

Another problem that exists is prejudice. If a Western man is seen with a Thai girlfriend, a lot of people think he is an ATM or wealthy, despite the fact that he is a balding sweaty overweight behemoth who has squeezed his beer gut into cheap shorts bought outside the Nana BTS. This occurs even though she may really love her boyfriend or husband and has met him under very wholesome circumstances during a vacation on Walking Street. This prejudice is on both Thai and Western sides.

Because of all of this, you want to be sure that you treat your Western man with respect, honor and love. When he asks you out for a date, gently and discreetly accept expensive gifts, chatter incessantly on your I-phone, play face book and generally look bored (except when you are hungry) Expect sexual advances on the first, second, or even third date so he knows that you know he is no gentleman with sincere motives.

The only difference in learning how to date a Western man is understanding more about his culture and heritage, because inherently, he is still a man and therefore will love and dislike the very same things that so many other men do.

As a side note, if you are one of those Thai women, that can't seem to make things work with men from your own culture, then going to Western men, may not be an easy answer. Although western men are in general considered more masculine and sexy, at least by themselves after they have consumed a great deal of alcohol, the still have needs, wants, dreams and desires like any other man. Learning how to date a western man is not that much different than learning how to date any relatively wealthy man whose scruples have been compromised and who is out to exploit uneducated women in an impoverished third world country.

  5. The SGN3 may not come out until ~ July or later.

The SGS4 is set to launch in NYC tomorrow.

Note sure how much either of these will create downward price pressure on the SGN2 in the near term?

    It looks like the SGN2 is 22,900 MSRP, ~ 19,900 box shop, ~ 17,500 grey market, ~ 7,500 knock-off.

Not sure about used/second-hand wholesale and retail prices? 12,000 - 13,000 wholesale? 16,500 retail? 15,000 - 17,000 on the Thai list o' craig; none on TV classifieds.

So, prices have not changed one bit since launch eh? Well, this was worth every cent paid @ siam paragon in November

  6. So this proposed new measure will keep death & carnage off the roads during the festival period ??

By baning the sale of alcohol over the three day festival, widely publicised beforehand of course so Joe public can stock up on their favourite brew, still enjoy their 3 day beer fest & the government keeps it's revenue coming in, problem solved!!

    PROBLEM NOT SOLVED!!

Are they not capable of thinking any policy through to the end ??

People will stock up on alcohol ahead of the festival & still feel the need to drive.. this will never stop drink driving in a million years !!

Police mounting road blocks on every corner with the advisory reading: if you drink & drive during this period you WILL be banned automatically for a year, you WILL go to jail for 6 months, you WILL pay a huge fine, your insurance cover WILL double in price..

As in other countries this WILL have more effect !!

ha, this is true-but consider the ecosystem that imposes so much control; a government with that much power results in a populace less powerful- I'd rather have more freedom and be encouraged to take personal responsibility for my behavior

  7. hook up an external monitor and run with both on. if the internal screen goes dark, and the external stays alive, that says you have a hardware problem. if both screens go dark, it is most likely software. For hardware, well, there is PanTip Plaza techs, and for software, perhaps a full wipe and reinstall of the OS. best of luck!

  8. And the point is:

    A) Avoid all ATM's not in a bank (98% of ATM's).

cool.png Avoid all ATM's with Middle Eastern-looking man, smartly dressed, with very good English lurking around

    C) Avoid Thailand

    D) Read the bad news and go to the temple to pray for "lucKY"

So are non-bank ATM's physically tampered with? How? Are there any signs? What are the signs? How can ATM's be tampered with and the bank NOT know about it? Banks here have no security measures on their ATM's? Or are the banks in on it as money flows up hill?

This story is like yelling fire in a crowded theater.

No, I think the story is accurate but leaves out the details on how it's done (for good reason). For that, see Krebs: http://krebsonsecurity.com/tag/atm-skimmer/

  9. There are several major causes for juvenile delinquency, one is indeed a lack of guidence/dicipline from parents, another one is boredom and group pressure also plays a very important role. Not to mention the fact that some people have a need for adventure and do things just for the kick. Some find it in being a figther pilote, others in being a criminal.

But society also makes criminals. The US prison system has never been so full since the war on drugs in the US. The fear is that Thailand will do the same. There are different categories of drug users. The biggest group are the ones, especially youngsters, who just experiment with them. Give them some time and they will stay away from drugs or only use it once in a while. Than there is a group that is really at risk and need some guidence to prevent them from becomming addicts and there is the group of addicts.

That the Thai justice system is trying to make a difference bewteen groups of juveniles is very possitive. Let's hope they will do the same regarding drug offenders.

    +1 ... well spoken

I too like this post, and also came here for the iPhone app. I am interested in why Asian youth do not participate in flash mobbing as do British and American youth, and I wrote an article about that here.

    Cheers!

  10. Why do us farangs buy the stuff. I think leave them in jail all their life and community service of cleaning the bar toilets.

Are farangs buying all that crystal meth?!? that's insane. I assumed all these details of meth busts was for local consumption by thais. Or are thais exporting to... where? meth is a really really bad drug, and I've seen the effects first hand in trailer park America - really bad and sad. So will these poor souls get executed? That's also very sad.

  11. ThermalTake BlacX Dute 2HDD

    Price: 1,650 บาท

    ori_20100407024726imageview.jpg

    <snip>

My "Xsonic" version was 1099 baht. Probably why it was crap.

It really pisses me off that most computer shops in Phuket stock the cheap unknown branded crap and clearly don't think people are willing to pay a bit more for quality.

Looking for one of these today in BKK, but must have firewire 800, and does not have to be 2x, but that would be nice too! thx...

  12. It amazes me that anybody would trust their passwords and any personal information to be managed by someone else, especially a web site.

    [/quo

I think your point is valid in the last case - a website. I use 1Password and it's pretty solid, with all data encrypted on your devices, and the info is never in the cloud (unless you count wi-fi syncing between devices). But with that said, it's not a free product like lastpass. The only thing I worry about with 1Password (and I a,m all Apple) is that one of my devices gets stolen or lost, as I am sure any program is hackable, and then the crims would have it all. Guard that stuff with ur life!
