  1. Ho hum its the annual "its loud to live in Nimmanhemin" thread thats been going on for ten years or so. There is a very simple answer, dont live in the middle of "Entertainment Central" Chiang Mai, or if you choose to, stop being outraged when they turn the noise up from its usual 10 to 11 or 12 !!

As someone who used to attend big Music Festivals back in the day when I was young and had my ears regularly blasted by people like Cream, Santana, Hendrix etc, I wouldnt mind quite so much here if the music was any good, but its so appallingly mundane meaningless loud drivel repeated ad nauseam !!!

  2. .

sure beat sitting home and whinging about the holiday..... secret is to go out and partake, not cry about things. waaaaahhhhhhh in england they dont do holidays...we sit home and crrrrrrrrrryyyy. (Postman Pat alias grinch). Did you win the snakes and ladders tournament?

Sit at home and whinge? Haha, far from that, went to a place where proper adults go, not overgrown children with silly face paint, and watched a magnificent sporting occasion, the Rugby World Cup Final! Oh sorry, forgot, you Americans dont do Rugby do you?

Lighten up Mr Slippery, its all in good fun !!

    Peace and Love !!

  3. Halloween. Pile of crap. Non existent holiday turned into something from nothing. At least its only one day. Ask 9 people out of 10 what it represents and they literally have no idea !!

Christmas has its Grinch, Halloween has PostmanPat.

So true Brucie, I m English and 9 out of 10 from my Country will agree with me !!

  4. When I have had problems with broken/ damaged glasses I have gone to several of the standard optician shops and always found them to be very helpful. Why draw the immediate conclusion that they wont try to help without trying them out? Seems a bit like declaring someone guilty without a trial!

  5. The fairly newly formed Chiang Mai Lawn Bowling Club ( Yes, we now have a professional quality lawn bowling green in Chiang Mai, anyone interested PM me or show interest on this thread, new members very welcome, experience or no experience is fine) is on the lookout for decent quality Polo Shirts, but heres the thing, they have to be without logo on the shirt, as we are making shirts with our own logo for members and friends.

Most of the Polo Shirts in Department Stores already have logos ( the usual crocodile thing etc etc) and they wont work for the lady who is embroidering our logo onto shirts.

Does anyone happen to know of a source for plain, rather than logoed Polo Shirts? We ve tried all the sources that are most likely to be mentioned as replies on here, such as The Export Shops, Robinson, etc etc, I guess it might be a specialist shop tucked away somewhere we dont know? Any suggestions much appreciated.

  6. As Yoda would say, may the luck good with you be, queuing up with the hordes of Thai Teens who will undoubtedly mob the cinemas for weeks on end!

I was being a bit jocular earlier, I will see it at some point, but not like my eldest son ( over 40) in England who has already pre booked to see it three times in the first few days of release....now thats an over reaction for me!

Is Alec Guinness still appearing in the new one ????!!!!!!

  7. Maybe you don't, but many of us have friends and relatives that earn minimum or close to minimum wage and we actually like to think about their situation as well.

So the reason not to pay 200 baht a day at the airport is out of some kind of sympathetic loyalty to people on the minimum wage?! Best excuse I ever heard. Heres an idea, if you have these noble sympathies, why not go out of your residence and just give away all your money beyond 300 baht a day to passing strangers?

  8. Wow. 200 Baht a day. Thats less than £4 UK money and youre looking for a cheaper option? You cant even drop off at a UK airport for less than £5 these days !!

Irelevant ,as i used to pay 9 euro a day near Dublin Airport 12 years ago ,but i am now in Thailand on a Thailand wage stream .It jumped from B100 to B200 in one year here at Chiang mai Airport parking .

I think we all know how much 200฿ is in £ (pounds), € (euros) and $ (dollars). We also know 200฿ is 2/3 of the daily minimum wage; do you want to pay 2/3 of the daily minimum wage to park at the airport in your home country?

But its not our "Home Country" is it, because everybody on here are expats therefore not on the minimum wage of Thailand !!! Yours in exasparation to these pedantic folk !!

  9. Wow. 200 Baht a day. Thats less than £4 UK money and youre looking for a cheaper option? You cant even drop off at a UK airport for less than £5 these days !!

Indeed. Next somebody will be informing us of what it costs to park at the airport in Dubai, or Switzerland. I've given up understanding what these people are thinking with. :-/

So sorry if you dont understand. Its quite simple really. 200 baht is really really cheap to park your car 50 metres from an airport terminal for 24 hours so cant work out what the fuss is about. As the OP has already stated two way in a taxi would be 600 baht so airport parking in Chiang Mai costs less than taxis. THATS my point. OK ??!!

  10. But surely, from the Polices perspective, if the majority of motor cyclists in Chiang Mai continue to flout the law of the land by ignoring helmets, what are the police supposed to do, just ignore?!

This whole situation is nonsense on top of everything else going on, on this question of trying to apply the legislation I actually support the police in doing spot helmet checks!!

  11. I m rarely out after midnight, maybe twice a month, and I dont drink to excess, and I dont go with hookers,

You sound like a lot of fun ......... NOT!

Drinking to excess and going with hookers is FUN.

(OK so I'm too old to do both at once, but I can still do one)

Blimey. You should work for The Daily Mail or The Sun. Talk about taking a few words out of context. Did you ACTUALLY READ my post, all of it? If you did you will note that I am one of those IN FAVOUR of later nights and freedom to choose.

Perhaps on the other hand you struggle with more than fifteen words in a straight line!

  12. Supporting LivinginLOS 100% for saying exactly what I have also been saying these past few weeks. There seems to be a particularly weird and perverse group on here who equate wanting to have the human right to meet with friends even if it goes on past midnight as being a group of old drunk alcoholics desperately in need of a drink or a hooker.

Nothing could be further from the truth. I m rarely out after midnight, maybe twice a month, and I dont drink to excess, and I dont go with hookers, but I try to live in a civilised 21st Century with freedom of expression and freedom of human rights to decide if I want to go to a late bar or a nightclub.

What these few strange people are missing is that the whole point of a "nightclub" is exactly that, its a place to go to after pub hours if (heaven forbid!) you fancy an extra hour or so. Nightclubs, for that is what they are, the clue is in the name, exist in most Countries in the World be it China, India, USA, UK, etc etc etc and on and on.

Far be it from me to allude as to why we are getting this ridiculous reaction from a few, but as a practising agnostic ( not atheist ) I am beginning to wonder if the strange views on here may be being expressed by members of the ( sadly ) vastly increasing christian missionary bible belt people who it seems are growing in number in Chiang Mai from month to month?

    Just a thought!!!!!

  13. So given that hotshots (like all Porn Ping venues) are in an on-again, off-again mode of operation, what would be some good alternatives for a Thai style pub with live music, roughly in that area?

My own submission for this would be Tamnaan Folk on Chang Klan road. Which I think is actually a lot better than Hot Shot was (although it did have its nights..)

I ve had good reports before about this place Winnie, but for the life of me cant work out exactly where it is.....can you be our guide? Thanks!

  14. The answer is, dont "come alive" at 11pm. We are advised on here by the sleep zealots that staying up after 10pm makes us very naughty people, and apparently by choosing to live in Chiang Mai we have to accept that we are living in a rural backwater with neither hope or expectation of a late night out!!!!

  15. They are quite obviousy stolen by Hang Dong Post Office Staff. There. I ve said it. No point in pretending otherwise.

No proof, never will be, but on this occasion 2 + 2 very definitely totals 4 !!!

    I say rubbish to that.

On what basis do you say rubbish? So wheres my mail? From not one but THREE Countries outside Thailand. Go on, justify your use of the word rubbish?

Perhaps you are one of the few remaining Thai loyalists who refuses to accept the reality of life??!!

  16. Dont hold your breath. Any attempted postings to me other than "boring plain brown envelopes" from outside Thailand have ALL gone missing these past couple of years. Things like Birthday & Christmas Cards, and coming from at least three Countries ( UK, Australia, USA). They are quite obviousy stolen by Hang Dong Post Office Staff. There. I ve said it. No point in pretending otherwise. ALL my stuff goes missing. So much so I ve advised all my family and friends not to send stuff any more.

No proof, never will be, but on this occasion 2 + 2 very definitely totals 4 !!!

  17. TV Chaos still not working using TOT. I dont think TOT have blocked the site as such because occasionally, like for a few minutes every couple of days TV Chaos works. I still hope that its some technical glitch within TOT that TOT might fix...eventually? Its been about five days now. Still hoping.

Anyone else got any feedback or updates?

  18. As I have said elsewhere.. its not just the bars and clubs directly.. The late night street food is vanishing fast too..

Thailand has such a large undocumented labor force, its hard to really get a handle on what kind of numbers are being affected. But its more than just a few bars..

Theres a slower vibe around nimman too... Last night sat in house of wines and the small bar over from it (outside pickles or whatever) didnt have a single customer all night and closed down just after 11.. Thats a Friday night straight after end of month payday.

Yes, can confirm this being about every type of place. I was in Pai.......Pai, sleepy rural town, almost village size, and the boys in blue ( or brown) had two distinct levels of harrassment. At 10pm they forced closure of all the onstreet food vendors selling dangerous products like Waffles and Spring Rolls, and at 11.30 they moved on to enforce closure of all bars and restaurants.

The other point of sadness was the way they closed them, the jackboot style, loud words, aggressive attitudes etc. Even the watching Chinese were perplexed by what they were seeing.

  19. TOT has either, an internal technical problem, OR, it has deliberately started to block downloads from at least a couple of the well known TV programme torrent sites. I can still download from a few sites, but there are now at least two where you can open the site but when you click to download a torrent it goes into utorrent but then just sits there with nothing happening.

Anyone else experiencing this or has information? I am in Chiang Mai by the way if thats relevant.
