  1. If you cannot see the old Linux partition from Windows (it would show up as another Drive D or E etc, then you should be safe deleting it.

Gparted is included in the Ubuntu Live CD, and is easy to use.

It should be a matter of deleting the spare partitions and then letting Ubuntu install itself as needed.

However I will admit that the Ubuntu is not as clear as it could be when it comes to knowing what partitions are going to be affected and I never install Ubuntu or do any work invloving changing partitions without a drive image from Acronis. (especially if it is not my machine)

When using Using Gparted to resize NTFS partitions I have had problems with it crashing, but so far no damage has been done........

  2. My system came back on line at about 7.30PM a few minutes after I had managed to get through to the CAT helpdesk (3rd attempt) who informed me that due to gateway problems it would be down all night.

It seems to have been a Provence wide issue as a friend in Chiang mai lost his CAT CDMA connection at exactly the same time

After months of good service that has now happened several times in the past few weeks

Always the same symptoms. Appears to be connected but no data throughput

  3. My wife has a business here (trucking) and one problem is that the locals do not understand the true costs of running a business. They think as long as there is money in their pocket at the end of the day then you are doing well. They forget about all the other costs (tax insurance, repairs etc). This not only means they never do well, but that you are competing against people who do not understand the cost of doing business. be very wary.

Staff are another problem. They usually make more money than you do!! (Honesty is a luxury many cannot afford)

I can confirm the low profits of an Internet business as I was friends with a local who had an Internet cafe for a year (opposite a large technical college). He only made enough money to feed himself and his family. Never allowed for the cost of PC's electric, phone etc.

Think of any business as a hobby for your wife with any income as a bonus and you will not be disappointed.

  4. airport mall has a number of shops on the 3rd floor what may be worth a look

I have Windows 6.1 mobile phone. Crap as a mobile and only use it as a PDA.

At the time I was unable to buy a PDA that was not also a mobile but I do find it useful to have a SIM card in so as I can send receive emails and browse the web while on the go.

For PDA use windows has the same benefits as in the desktop world of many 3rd party applications. eBook readers, rInternet radio players, Internet browsers organiers, Thai / English dictionary etc, and it seamlessly integrates with the desktop for data backup.

Having said all that I much preffered my earlier palm models which were much more user friendly, until they lost the plot.

For an idea of software available for PDA's and windows mobile phones see http://www.handango.com/homepage/Homepage.jsp

  5. Thanks......... but $50 for a software i will use maybe once every 2 years....... seems alot. Anything simple out there ?

Found DriveImage XML, not sure how good it is though

Acronis is my choice and I would advice using it much more frequently than 2 years or you will be in the same boat again. I update my systems image every m1/2 months. This does not iinclude day to day data on a different partition which is backed up daily.

  6. Why 9.04 and not 9.10?

I dual boot XP and Ubuntu 9.10 with no problems. There is a boot manager down loadable from the Ubuntu package manager which makes it easily to configure the Grub dual boot options (timeout and default OS etc) which is a must get.

If you use Firefox / Thunderbird there are nmany web articles on sharing the profiles between the 2 systems. I would advise using two profiles for Firefox and using symlinks from the Ubuntu profile to the M$ one for bookmarks and browsing hsitory as many extensions either do not work or require different settings for Linux. With Thunderbird I can share the same profile with no problems

  7. I had exactly the same se6t up as you withCrapstar and changed to CAT about 8 months ago. My Laptop was my main PC and the desktop in my daughters bedroom.

    Here are my comments

The Kyerocia unit looks good but I thought it very expensive for the model that supports the faster EV-DO speeds (I think about 11K Baht). Because I sometimes need to take my Laptop away on business I built a new PC to run ICS (and do some other stuff such as Torrent downloading) for half the price of a Kyocera modem.

The ICS route is easy and free, but not quite as simple as indicated by Tariq786. This is because you have to change some IP addresses in your router and possibly other devices.

The disadvantage with ICS is that you have to keep your desktop on all the time any other user wants to share the Internet.

If you wish to use ICS here are some basic steps you must follow.

This assumes that you are using out of the box settings for your Linksys router

    First note

    * There are no wiring or hardware changes other than disconnecting your Crapstar Modem.

    * Linksys routers by default have an IP address of 192.168.1.1.

    * M$ insists that if you use ICS (Internet Conection Sharing) then your desktop ethernet port that hosts the connection has to have an IP address of 192.168.0.1. This is a different subnet to the Linksys router and they will not be able to communicate without some N/W address changes.

    * The M$ ICS has a DHCP service to supply information to clients using automatic IP addressing.

    * The Linksysys router also has a DHCP service which is superior to the M$ one. Unfortunately it is difficult to turn off the DHCP in the M$ ICS system and because it is inadvisable to have 2 DHCP services DHCP should be disabled in the Linksys router

Therefore your steps are as follows

    * Log on to your Linksys router from your web browser at the default address of 192.168.1.1 (see the manual for full information) Unless previously changed for login leave the username blank and the password is admin

    * Disable DHCP

    * Change the Routers IP address to 192.168.0.2

    * Restart your router. You will not be able to log on to the router again until ICS is installed following one of the many guides on the Internet.for your OS

    * Once ICS is installed check you can log on to the Linksys router as before but using the new IP address of 192.168.0.2.

    * In each of your devices if they are not set up to obtain an IP address automatically then change them on to the 192.168.0.x subnet.

You should now be up and working.

By the way, Ubuntu Linux 9.10 also supports the CAT CDMA router and Internet connection sharing and this a;lso works well.

    Good luck

  8. Wait until you have to buy rope by the kilogram and not by metre.

Buying rope (and hose pipe) by weight is a great idea (for the retailer) You have no idea how many fet per Kg or whatever so are sure to buy twice as much as you need, AND they don't have to waste time uncoiling it to measure it

    Excellent business sense :)

While I would like to agree, I think you are giving them too much credit in this case.

Never underestimate the ingenuity of a lazy man out for a quick buck

  10. I get a problem with people using MS Word trying to open a MS Works or Open Office file that I have sent as an attachment...they're saying that the file won't open in Word. Don't understand this as all three are supposed to be mutually compatible...

usually end up resending as a .pdf attachment... :)

To be able to open an Open Office Document in word, you need to make sure it is saved in MS word format (.dox)

Open Office will open all major formats, but Word will only open documents in formats it understands, and the default open Office is not one of them, thus you have to save the file in MS format.

See the above link as to how to set this as the default action

  11. Can you give any more information about the files that will not open?

Document Type - word / excel / Powerpoint

    What is the file extension?

Do you know what version of office it was created with?

Hey thank you for answering. I am not familiar at all with these things but this is what I have found for one document when trying to open it

Type de fichier : Document Microsoft Office Word 97 - 2003

    Extension de fichier: .doc

Description: Créez des lettres, des rapports et d'autres documents avec le Traitement de texte Works

Logiciel ou les informations disponibles à:

These files should open OK with no problem

I guess that you are trying to open the files by double clicking on them, and not from within Open Office using the File - Open command. Your problem is that that your operating system (XP, Vista or windows 7?) still thinks they should be openend with Microsfot Office and is returning the error message.

To solve this you need to "right click the file and select Open with.

You will then be given a list of programs to choose from whihc may or maynot include Open Office in the list of Recomended programs. If it does not include Open Office, then click "Other programs and a much longer list will apear that includes OPen Office. Select OPen Office and then be sure to place a tick in the "Always use the slected program box" Then click OK.

Now everytim you click that type of program it should open with Open Office. You will need to do this with each type of the Microsoft offcie programs (Word Excel, Powerpoint) etc.

If you want to always save your programs in Microsoft format to send to other then follow these instructions

    Hope this is all clear,

  12. Having worked for a number of years in major IT and infrastructure projects in Thailand and elsewhere is SE Asia I have dealt with engineers from many nationalities such as Thai, Indian, Philippino and Chinese as well as many from western countries

From experience I can state that there are some very good Thai engineers, (and some very poor ones) just like anywhere else.

However they are disadvantaged by poor English, poor management and when working locally reduced budget caused by kickbacks. Often the product selected is not the best one, but the one that pays the best commission Many times this is a smaller company trying to make a name in the region, without sufficient experience.

It should also be noted that most prestigious projects open when the politicians say it will no matter how ready or otherwise the engineers say they are. The time allocated for proper testing is nearly always cut short, because it starts late due to delays in installation, but still always has to finish when the politicians say so. You would be surprised at the number prestigious projects that open without fully tested and functional systems.

On my last project in the ME some software engineers from Thailand were employed by a major international company because of experience they gained at Suvarnabhumi (and of course price) and it was generally agreed that they were far superior to the ones found locally.

So lets stop knocking Thai engineers and help them improve by impating our experience.

To one other poster I would say, that a certificate in programming does not make you a good programmer. Anybody can learn a computer language, but the ability to understand the issues and find and implement the correct solution comes from practice and experience. Once the solution is clearly identified then it is time to pass it on to a code monkey with the fancy ceritificate and no experince to implement.

Finally it is often not the software that is at fault, but poor operator training or unforeseen external events so without all the facts lets not make hast judgements on the ability or otherwise of our hosts.

  13. Possible? Yes

Practical? That depends on your application and budget.

    How many cameras?

    Where are they located?

Where is the signal going (Range)?

How do you intend to receive the signal? (you will also have to power the transmitter if radio frequency)

There are cameras that connect to an Ethernet cable and get their power over the ethernet cable (max 100M using a special hub or switch, but they are not cheap.

I have some small cheap cameras around my house which transmit theri signal about 40 meters and can be powered from a 9v battery. There is no reason why such a camera could not be solar powered except that you would need several cells to get the voltage, and also a storage battery so as you do not lose video when the sun is not shining.

  14. Normal practice is to pay based on progress and not to hold all the money until the project is finished. Having paid him about 32% sounds about right. He does need to make his payroll each week.

As anyone ever mentioned to you how to start a new paragraph?

    :D

    TH

My house has now been up for 10 years. I paid in stage payments but held back 10% for defects. A few weeks after moving in I found some problems and called the builder, who told me to Keep the 10% as he was interested in fixing any problems. :D

It cost me much less than the 10% to have the issues fixed by another builder :)

I must say the house still looks OK but the electrics and Plumbing were the main problem areas. however I was not able to supervise and left it all to the wife so in general I am very pleased

Thanks to the OP for an interesting post and I hope others find his information useful.

Number one rule is Watch everything all the time.

Number Two rule is Watch everything all the time.

I used a PC Home design package to give a 3D representation of what I wanted and the wife was able to show pictures to the builder of what she was expecting. Well worth the effort.
