  1. The Peacock inn food quality has now improved a lot since they had an American chef in to help train the cooks, menu increased in size along with the servings, worth trying.

Has anybody tried 'Sammy's Snack Attack' yet? I drive past a lot and have yet to see a customer, but if it is any good, then it would be ideal for a quick take away sandwich or burger.

  2. I've not actually tried myself, but several British mates have brought different types of sausages from the new Central Supermarket and all have reported them to be very good and tasty, Cumberland variety gets the biggest thumbs up from all so far.

  3. Thanks Mario.

The confusion seems to lie in that another one of our staff has the same ED visa for his child, again multiple entry and immigration have since stamped a multiple re-entry permit in the child's passport? This doesn't make a lot of sense to us either, as why issue a multiple entry visa in the first place if a re-entry permit is subsequently needed.

It is actually not myself with this problem, it is a colleague, again he appears to have more problems, as his partner (both are South African) is in the country on a non-imm O visa, multiple entry.

She is the mother of the child and he is the father, but in the eyes of Thai law they are not married as they have no official marriage certificate, they have several documents showing common law marriage, but this applies to their home country only.

Is there anyway that both his son and partner can get a one year extension of stay based on being his dependents?

He is on a non-imm B visa, one year extension of stay and work permit.

  4. If you are issued with a Multiple ED visa, valid for 12 months, multiple entry, then is it is necessary to have a re-entry permit stamped in your passport before the first departure from Thailand is made?

Our HR department says not, but the child's school (he is 6) is saying it is necessary.

His passport was stamped allowing him to stay in Thailand for 90 days until 3rd April 09, how about an extension of stay, is this possible and how long would he get, another 30 days?

    Thanks.

  5. I'm not sure that this is really the right post area for this, but I'm sure a moderator will move it if it is not.

We have to provide food handling certificates for our Thai catering staff in order to comply with one of our clients expectations, do any of you know if this training is available here in Thailand, that will allow the issuing of a safe food handling certificate to the participants, course would be best held in Thai.

    Thanks in advance.

  6. Thank BSJ, I have thought about a turbo, but tend to think it won't give me the torque that I'd like, I'm interested in making it more usable in the low down power range for overtaking etc. rather than top speed.

Plus, thanks for your reply also, was rather hoping that the breakers here will end up with one of the units out of a write off 3.5, not in any particular hurry, though I might make inquiries on the cost of importing one.

  7. Afternoon all,

Not sure if this has been asked before and my apologies if it has, but do any of you know if it is possible to install the 3.5 V6 Camry engine and gearbox, complete with the engine management system to a 2.4V model?

In 'theory' it should be relatively straight forward, but I'm no expert.

I 'may' consider to do this modification if a secondhand unit becomes available, obviously upgrading suspension and brakes to suit and ensuring that it is all documented and legal.

At 2.88 Million for the 3.5, then there is a lot of leeway to do this mod.

    Thanks.

  8. Gents, I don't quite understand the OP's situation, but if he has a non imm B visa and a work permit and meets all the requirements that are needed for renewal, then why can this not be done within Thailand?

In my own case for instance, I was issued with a single entry non imm B visa in Singapore in July 2004 and have never renewed this particular visa outside of Thailand since, basically I have to go to the one stop visa place in BKK every year, renew the work permit and then have a new multiple re-entry permit (non immigrant) stamped in the passport. The extension of stay for another year is automatic.

BTW At the time of getting the non imm B visa in Singapore, I was told by the Thai Embassy there that it is possible only to get a single entry visa when it is required for applying for the work permit, as the extension etc. must be done in Thailand?

  9. Jumpstart, I have Banglamung cable TV and internet, actually it is quite good, fairly reliable and surprisingly fast, would recommend it.

Note that they are no longer anything to do with Supernet, in fact they are in direct competition, far superior as well in my opinion.

are you located on the dark side?

  10. Both of my children (6 & 9) went to a birthday party there a couple of weeks ago, they arrived at 11am and then we picked them up at 5:30pm.

They are provided with food and taken care of by the staff, party is held in a dedicated room, next to the pool.

Organised activities include games in the swimming pool, ping pong and general children games, from what my children say it was all good fun for them.

From what I saw, it was quite professionally done.

Though like I say, not sure what the cost would be, but don't imagine it is cheap.

  11. Gents,

I appreciate all the replies, mostly BS but there you go, again I reiterate, I have NOT attempted to smuggle anything yet (nor would I), as by definition, until any person passes through the customs barrier of any country then it is not, nor cannot be, an offense to carry a bag of any quantity of cigarettes off the airplane, so if I had more than 200 Cigarettes as I passed through immigration and didn't declare them, then yes an offense has been committed.

For sure if you go to the duty free shop, either going out or coming in, they will sell you just as many as you want to buy, illegal, nope, only when you try to import them.

for those that think otherwise, yes, there has been more than one occasion of customs (etc.) officers attempting to scam foreigners on arrival, it will happen.

    Enough said.

  12. I arrived back from a business trip to the UK on Sunday 21st December 2008 evening, the flight was via Abu Dhabi, whilst walking between gate E2 and immigration, I was stopped by two young guys in plain clothes, where they asked to see inside the plastic bag I was carrying from Abu Dhabi duty free.

I asked them why and if I could see some i.d. first, they told me they could look if they wanted to and quickly flashed a security badge at me.

I then told them there was 200 cigarettes, a bag and some aftershave in the bag and basically walked away from them.

Has anybody else had this experience at all??

I for one do not understand it, first off, whilst walking to immigration, then technically you are not yet in Thailand, so cannot be subject to the customs laws, secondly, I may well have been transiting to another country and what was stopping me purchasing more things at the duty free area you are forced to walk through at the immigration area?

Just wondering if they were really customs or not!

  13. I would say that Villa is indeed overpriced on certain items, more so than Freindship for example.

However there are a number of factors in their defense.

To compare the cost of Ribena in Sainsburys to Villa is really verging on the ridiculous, for example how much would Thai Jasmine rice or a bottle of Thai fish sauce cost in Sainsburys?

Remember we are in minority here in Thailand and the likes of Branston Pickle etc. are not being brought by the locals and certainly not in the quantities that they are in the UK.

Sainsuburys have massive buying power, Villa etc. do not, couple that with high import duties, transportation costs from the UK and internally, the need to make a profit and a relatively small market, you will indeed get a rather high price.

The cost of imported products certainly should drop with the exchange rates, but with time, most of these products were probably imported at 70 THB to the GBP, the cost of transportation has also dropped, so hopefully this will reflect in the costs in the next couple of months.
