  1. hi guys,

I'll have to renew my 1 year driving license that'll expire next Wednesday. I've gone to the Songkhla Immigration Office to get the TM47 form, and they said that they don't do that and to try at my amphoe. Now that I've gone to my Amphoe, they don't know anything about such form and where I can get this Certificate of Residence.

Question, if I get myself a yellow book, can I use this instead of the certificate of residence?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. @4evermaat:

Welcome to the world of parenthood :)

Regarding private rooms, I would strongly recommend booking one unless you would want to find yourself sleeping on the floor close to your wife's bed with 20-30 patients.

And I must say that you can't be sure it'll be 100% natual birth as it depends if the vagina is dilated or not, and on many other factors. So keep a good sum in hand as you'll never know.

So you have to consider many things. The govt hospital in Hat Yai quoted us nearly 30,000baht for 3 days of stay, but we didn't choose them for the obvious reasons stated before. We chose Bangkok Hatyai with nearly a 60,000 quote. There are also cheaper package that range from 30,000 to 40,000. I must say that there's a huge difference in quality of service compared to govt hospital. At Bangkok Hatyai, you'll have English speaking staffs (though not fluent but at least they understand your every requests). I've been to govt hospital, and none the staffs could understand and speak English. Can you believe that?

Regarding the fees, we were lucky to have an arrangement with my wife's doctor and Bangkok Hatyai. We paid the doctor 10,000baht directly, and there was a considerable reduction in the hospital fees.

You'll have to bring in your passport, your wife's home book and ID card. Usually the hospital will take care of the registration process for you. A copy of your front page, your visas, and your extension if you're on it, and the immigration card that you filled out and got stamped on the first day you entered the Kingdom will suffice.

  3. Hotspot shield provides US based IP address whereas Expat Shield provides UK based IP address. Unfortunately, you can't have both on your computer. Unless you have 2 computers where you can have one install on each.

  4. Are you looking into a VPN to only control your PC in UK? Or just simply to have a UK based IP address when surfing the net etc?

If you are looking for a UK based IP address, you can use Expat Shield. However, there are a lot of ads with this little VPN software. But nevertheless, you can have your UK based IP address.

Much less hazzle to configure a router etc. Just install, and you're ready to go.

By the way, I'm using it to watch BBC's channel ;)

    Cheers!

  5. I'm just posting a quick update following the request of David48 :)

We did not go to Songkhlanagarind hospital in the end as the staffs were not showing care at all.

We went to Bangkok Hatyai Hospital instead. The service there was really impressing. After having her c-section done, there were 2 nurses checking on her every 30 minutes, for the first 8 hours. And then 1hr for the next 12 hours, and every 2-3 hours for 2-3 days.

The staffs are polite, and always have a bright smile on their face no matter how many times you call upon them.

Even months after the delivery, the staffs would call once a month or two asking if the baby is fine, and offer a lot of advice.

Total cost = 54,000 THB (room, room service, surgery, doctor fee, nurse fee, etc).

I find it rather cheap compared to Government Hospital where you pay almost the same amount but with different level of services.

I like both Nonthavej (Bangkok), and Bangkok Hatyai (Hat Yai).

Regarding pediatric service, we have chosen Sikarin hospital over Bangkok Hatyai. They offer the same service except that the vaccines are much cheaper.

    Cheers! :)

  6. Hello guys,

Last month, I bought a brand new toilet set at Home Pro (Hat Yai). The band name is Moya but unfortunately, the cover fell down and got broken. Home Pro don't have any spare parts at all, and so does other places as Moya is a brand name from Home Pro... Heck, if only I knew that it would be difficult to get spare parts, I would have bought Cotto or American Standards.

Anyhow, so I am after Carbon Fibre so that I can mould one cover. Do you know where I can get the materials?

    Thanks.

Do you think people can easily distinguish the species just by looking at the pictures?

However, the mambas are making highlights on TV.... be careful.

  8. Hello guys,

I had always done my report and renewal at the Nonthaburi office in Bangkok, but since August, I am living in Songkhla.

I have been looking information everywhere and so far, I've seen offices for Sadao and Khuan Don but not Songkhla. As such, I am not sure where to do my report next month and my extend on February.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks in advance :)

  9. We're expecting our little boy around 6-9 Sept. First 7-8 months we were in Bangkok and my wife was followed by Dr. Linda from Nonthavej Hospital. A good doctor that scold my wife for not being careful since she was diagnoses with a gestational diabetes on her 5th month pregnancy. Staffs at Nonthavej were very professional and do smile every time with a very top notch service.

We are now in Songkhla, and my in laws like Songkhlanagarind Hospital a lot. The doctor was polite enough but the staffs were very harsh and don't display proper manner. Speaking of a professional job, I wanted to make a complaint against them. Let me share one of the so many bad experiences from Songkhlanagarind:

My wife even requested gently "please, can you please give me the blanket." for a 30mins "stress test". And the nurse replied back with a tone "Why can't you take it yourself? Just turn and take it, should not that difficult."

However, many people are recommending Songkhlanagarind Hospital but I remain skeptical due to their staffs.

  10. Or maybe he was just pointing the fact that there was no helicopter crash before in the dense forest area where they were to retrieve the dead bodies ;)

My wife has just explained to me some reporters have mentioned that due to bad weather, there are mass pressure present there, thus causing these fatal accidents.

  11. Just want to add something that I experienced 2 years ago.

If you have to bring an official document from your home country, get the Thai Consulate in your home country to review and certified it (Signature and the Thai Consulate Stamp with Date and Time of review). Then, get the document translated in Thailand, and have it reviewed and certified by MFA at Chaeng Wattana.

When visiting the immigration office for your extension of stay, produce a copy of the original version with the Thai Consulate stamp together with the certified translated one. This is enough to help you with your extension since it has been endorsed by the Thai Consulate in your home country.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers.

  12. thanks for the feedback, lomatopo.

I'm using an old i-mate jasjam and yes I can tether my phone using it as a modem attached to my phone but still the USB modem provides better option in terms of connectivity. The SIM card when used in my phone have a G signed next to the signal, I haven't send any MMS from the phone, have to try that.

Regarding the proper network configuration of the USB modem, I have tried every possible options available and yet the modem cannot find a network to register. Yes the modem is branded but have been unlocked by the provider upon my request when I wanted to change to a new provider.

My wife and I are only using AIS 1-2call SIMs, we haven't tried using other ones. Maybe I'll try that route :)

  13. I am living in Bangkok for quite a while now but did not find the Huawei E220 USB Modem useful until recently. I already have a True broadband package at home but would like to use the USB Modem when I feel like working offsite and need a small connection just to send reports occasionally within a day.

I was asking if we do require a special SIM card given the fact that I saw True SIM packaged as "NET SIM"

While I was in my country before, I could use any normal SIM card from any provider with my Huawei E220 USB Modem. Recently, I have tried my 1-2-Call AIS SIM card from my mobile with the modem and I don't seem to find a coverage even if I have changed the Network preferences from the software dashboard (Mobile Partner) to either GSM preferred only or WCDMA preferred only.

Modem is using the firmware 11.313.02.00.01 and the hardware version is CD33TCPU.

    Thanks :)

  14. hi guys, sorry for hijacking this thread.

I also have a Huawei E220 USB Modem as the OP which I have brought with me from another country. There I could take any SIM card (e.g. I can take my phone SIM and insert it in the modem) and I can easily access the internet. How is the setup here in Thailand?

Do I require a special SIM card? The so called Net Sim or something?

    Thanks in advance :)

  15. I used to go on Opencart.com for exchange with the developers but since start of May I can't anymore.... I am using True as ISP. Guess here there's always restriction everywhere.

Edit: I just tried a free VPN service provider, I can now access Opencart.com
