  1. When bargaining with a street vendor and he thinks your offer is too low, I seem to remember over-hearing once การ์ตูน...การ์ตูน as his response. B)

  2. ...The facts are not known...But there is a murder charge. It's incredible. No weapon. No witnesses. No cause of death. And also we can accurately assume she wasn't shot or stabbed. So you have a body with no obvious cause of death...Yet a man is arrested...

I guess you didn't read the news articles linked in the thread.

The press report that prior to the murder the staff at the hotel heard a fierce argument going on in his room between the two before it suddenly went silent. This was followed by Mr Dehghan making a rapid exit from the room. Fearing something untoward had happened, the staff knocked on the door but no one answered. On opening the door with the spare key they found the girl dead in the room with signs of a struggle having taken place. Police were called and an initial examination found bruises and marks on the girl's neck consistent with strangulation.

You can hardly blame the police for arresting him at that stage.

  3. There was a bit more in Thairath which also makes no mention of a bargirl, but instead reveals the killer to be the 20 year old security guard at the hotel, Thon Arunothai (Somchai), who has confessed to the murder already. His accomplice in the murder was a former security guard at the hotel, Yut (surname as yet unknown) who had resigned 2-3 months earlier and no longer worked there.

The motive appears to have been robbery with them stealing a total of 300 Baht plus 300-400 US dollars in cash and the victim's moped.

Apparently Thon Arunothai had form having previously been imprisoned for trespass and attempted murder, only being released in January of this year, which with hindsight, perhaps didn't make him the most suitable of security guards.

The bargirl part to the story mentioned in an earlier post seems to have been told by Thon Arunothai before he was arrested, presumably to throw people off the trail. When the housekeeper went to clean the room on the 8th Dec and found it locked preventing her from entering, Arunthai told her the deceased's bargirl companion had told him she wanted the door kept locked to prevent any theft and hence the body wasn't discovered until several days later on the 13th Dec.

  4. I was reading a bit about that yesterday in Thairath (with pictures). Apparently the couple were taken to Chiang Mai's Central Memorial hospital after they were attacked with chains and hooks outside a beer bar in Loi Kraw Rd by a group of 5 itinerant mahouts. Kingsly William, 26, had to have a head X-ray to check for bleeding on the brain. Kim Kavanagh, 31, had injuries to her left forefinger.

Police arrested 3 of the mahouts and they've been taken to Chiang Mai police station awaiting identification by the unfortunate couple.

  5. In the Thairath they also reported on the story and interviewed the housekeeper of the New Nordic hotel where he was staying. Apparently he'd been bitten several times before by his cobra(s) and made a habit of rushing downstairs and asking the staff for help who would send him off to the local hospital via motorcycle taxi for treatment (presumably for snake venom antidote). This time however, it appears he didn't make it.

  6. Last time I installed Google Earth it seemed to decide it wanted to have several different processes running at all times and connecting to the internet even when Google Earth wasn't running.

    Rather put me off it.

Hope the latest version has dumped this behaviour.

  7. I remember reading a similar story in June of this year when police found 14 preserved aborted foetuses in jars of saline solution an abandoned room in Ubon Ratchathanee.

They subsequently arrested a 59 year-old Thai woman who admitted to owning the foetuses and acting as the broker who took pregnant young girls to a backstreet abortion clinic and sold on the foetuses to a shaman in the south for 1000 Baht a pop to make gumanthong amulet charms.
