  1. The reality of IS is more simple than all above. They are a cult that uses some verses of the Quran and Hadith to justify their actions. They do not follow shariah law, and cannot be called Muslims.

They are quite a bit more extreme than the 'christian' Jimmy Jones cult or other cults that are headed by a megalomaniac and/or power hungry individuals. Their vision is obviously to conquer lands and people using the name of Islam and killing everyone who stands in their way. They are also very much a reaction to an islamophobic world, and also detest the so called Muslim nations and their leaderships. IS is a cult of heretics which should be destroyed.

  2. Not sure what department the work for, but basically fine anyone, well only foreigners who throw cigarette ends on the street.

The sign near Emporium says clearly in Thai a fine of 5000 Baht is applicable, whilst further up between Asoke and Nana BTS it is only 2000 where they tend to target the Koreans. A motorcycle taxi driver told me Thais only pay 200 Baht but have never seen them stop a Thai- why would they.

  3. Just watched it, and it does show how helpful and very patient Thais can be even at swampy. However, the tourists shown I hope are not your average ones, just plain stupid, drunk and hopeless, and a bad reflection on the "normal" farangs over here - Thailand should screen these idiots and not allow them in, but the Pattaya and Patong might be empty of tourists.

  4. Whatever happened to Image Limo, they used to have good drivers and new Nissan Teanas. I used them a lot when I lived in pattaya. I heard the Brit owner had sold it a few years ago. Anyone knows?

  5. Depending on your budget, I would suggest the following based on many trips to Laos over 20 year period:

Good budget: fly to Vientiane for a couple of nights and enjoy strolling the wide avenues and the small cafes and restaurants as well as a few cultural sites. Enjoy the slower pace of Laos. Then fly to Luang Prabang, a jewel of an old city and ensure you stay in the old town. Fly back to BKK

Low budget: fly to Udon Thani, take a minibus to the friendship bridge, then a short ride to Vientiane. Take a bus to Vieng Vien for another 2 nights, and return the same way.

Another option is to fly to LP direct, spend 3 nights and then take the slow boat to Huay Xai. Takes 2 days including overnight in Pakbeng. From Huay Xai, cross the river and get to Chiang Rai to fly back to BKK.

I am sure you'll enjoy Laos and the Laotian hospitality.

  6. La Boulange hands down! I agree it is very difficult to get a proper croissant outside France but he is a professional French baker.

All others including la baguette are poor comparison.

Available from Friendship and Villa or their bakery on 3rd Road.

  7. I visited Koh Tao a few months ago. I was offered drugs as I came off the ferry, and I am over 50 and not exactly look like the type that does drugs. The island has its own mafia like most beach resorts, and the majority if workers come from Burma. In fact I would guess there are more illegal Burmese workers than Thais on the island.

The drug they call Kratom is widely used on the island.

I am not suggesting any of the above contributed to the horrific murders, but would not surprise me.

Anyway, this is a tragic incident on a very beautiful island. Condolences to the families of the deceased.

  8. Many thanks to all for the replies. My budget does not stretch to the Mazda cx5 which is a bit more than the CRV or the Captiva. Alternatively I could keep go for a sedan. I currently have a Honda Civic which is good, fast and very quiet. I have driven the new model and does not feel or look as good as my 2012 model. The other sedan in the same class I like is the Chevy Cruze but have never driven one. I am not so bothered about resale value as my company funds the purchase.

  9. Looking at getting new car and fancy an SUV. I really like the new look of the CRV and have driven a Captiva not so long ago. I used to have a CRV about 8 years ago and it was very noisy, hope the 2014 model isn't.

I would also like a built in GPS screen.

Anyone experience with either model, I would be interested to hear.

  10. I have read through all the posts, and have seen no reference to F&N Magnolia milk which I find the best tasting milk. It does not say fresh milk and you get get full fat and low fat varieties (pic). It is not available everywhere and I find it at Villa market and selected Big C's.

I do find most other milks in Thailand to be sweetened, not sure if it's just my taste buds. Anyway Magnolia's best for my tea and cereals.

  11. I am planning to hire a car from Chiangmai and drive to Pai and then Mae Hong Son. I hear the drive is long and has hundreds of bends.
3 of us will be going and looking to stay in reasonably priced hotels ( 1500++) a room. Appreciate suggestions of hotels, restaurants, things to see and do. I have 7 days for this trip or is that too long?

  12. I have been here more than 15 years, have a WP and only carry my passport when I travel around Thailand, mainly because hotels require them at check-in. In all this time I have never been stopped and asked for my passport, I even check-in for flights with my Thai driving license.
There is an easy answer to all this bullshit about carrying passports (risky and cumbersome): look like a tourist, or someone that has a proper job, not a scruff, don't do anything illegal and don't drive a bike and you will most probably never get asked for your passport!
