  1. We should be frightened of Global Warming, it is no joking matter. Anyone with eyes, ears and half a brain can see well documented reports of people losing their homes and/or livelihoods due to rising temperatures and sea levels. Many progressive signs leave no doubt that a great change is taking place.

What might be debatable are the causal relationships with human activity. Which implies the possibility or not of our ability to affect the change or its rate.

The separation of evidence for these two hypotheses is extremely important and often obscure. This raises the temperature of political and scientific communities somewhat! The mistaken stand that because the cause is not completely clear no action is possible or at least a waste of money cannot be right. That we must take defensive action against Global Warming cannot be denied by intelligent informed people.

There is a global warming???? Who says this??? We shouldn't be that arrogant and believe that we know anything. If humans becoming too nasty, nature will wipe us out. Sure we have to care what is going on, sure we should be carefull with our environment, but stop teaching ordinary people to do better ...and the high end lobby give a sh_t.

would be a good place to start learning.

  3. It’s odd that Americans are so touchy about their English. Did they invent it - yes they did and that’s fine, it shows that English is a living language. There is no grammar academy of English that has control over that. That much is clear.

Certainly, no grammarian can say yea or nay to a sentence provided (that) it is clear. Experts of plain English favor omitting ‘that’ if having it adds nothing to the sentence, saying (that) including it makes a sentence longer than necessary. My sentence was too long I am hoping (that) you will forgive me.

(And for the time (that) it took me to construct the above)

You miss the point. It is not that Americans are 'so touchy' about their English. The English language is unreasonably difficult. The point is that Americans are sometimes, as in this case, criticized as being illiterate. It is the criticism of Americans, not the English language, that gets old.

It’s odd that Americans have a very different sense of humor. That they don’t see the obvious must mean that it is not obvious to them. The English language is very unreasonable so that we can keep making jokes that others don’t see. That it is not directed only at Americans proves that we are not prejudice against (or for) them.

That is seven ‘That’s – oops missed the last few that makes it ten now. That’s not bad in six sentences that are quite short. (Now twelve)

  4. Bad grammar--Well that means it could have been a Thai person or an American!

I hope they catch the person responsible for this. Very inconvenient for a lot of people.

I am glad, however, that it was a message and not a real bomb.

Were their any righters from The Nation on that plain? :)

At first I thought you were being sarcastic, with the use of "righters", as opposed to writers. Then I saw "their" instead of there, plain instead of plane. You really shouldn't be critical unless you have all your ducks in a row. It seems to be great sport on TV to put everything and everyone down. We are not kids, act your age and give people a break. Unless we are talking about Thai ad agencies, who seem to have the motto "Wenotnidanyhelprightingenglishadz Kup"

I also thought 'crusader79' was quite funny - his ducks made a great line.

  6. “An investigation to identify the person/s responsible for making the threat is continuing."

I like the ‘/s’ - what were the ‘persons’ doing? So bored they had to write messages?

Pencil or lipstick could be traced but I guess it’s too late now. Hand writing samples – no chance; height might eliminate some; bad grammar, give them all a test?

I don’t know how I would investigate - but if there was CCTV in the passenger cabins it might solve this one and a maybe lot of other things. Especially if it were visible in a few places on the plane and maybe transmitted when requested by crew.

  7. The equity markets may be about to fall but one thing is very clear. The gold market will not, and seems to explain the difference between the 'Atlantic' major currencies and the pacific 'local' currencies.

In USD, GBP, EUR gold has risen by nearly one third.

In THB, SGD, MYR gold has risen by about one tenth.

(That choice of local currencies just happens to be what I am interested in - but I doubt if they are unique)

So our currencies will appear to rise against what are considered the stable currencies, but I think the 'time of the pacific' is arriving. This will not correct completely. Generally, our economies are stronger than before, especially compared with the old world. I wish I'd bought more gold with Pounds/ Euros when my wife advised it!

My rates are over approx the last 12 months

  9. ...

The tragedy is not that the vast majority of the Thai nation like to see cameos of rich families on TV, but that they learn their roles from watching it, like kids modelling themselves on their favourite comic-book characters. Well - it's a double tragedy as the quality of what they are watching is pure pantomime in the first place. Amazing Thailand.

I hope you are using pantomime in the meaning of unreal.

Good pantomime is an excellent (uniquely British) comedy genre that can be enjoyed by all ages. Thai soaps have overacting, poor or no plots etc. etc. and far too much violence. The background noises of an extraordinary ludicrous nature are maybe, the only similarity that is even close, but not in keeping with the rest of the Thai production.

  10. Extend the airport express train around to Don Mueng ... then run all the budget airlines from there. At least the airport express would get used more.

Ummm... how can something that isn't being used yet 'get used more'?

    <snip>

It's open and available. It is getting used. So it could get used more.

And if it wasn't being used, then it could obviously be used more.

I think the mad hatter knew that - it is easy to get more than nothing. But then Grammarians and Mathematicians are different people.

  11. Don't forget that you can get 15 months out of a Non Imm O Multi Visa.

Maybe I forgot to mention the key! Sorry,

In Bangkok, getting an extension is just too much trouble, especially as my employer is outside Thailand and three weeks out of four I am in KL. Are you saying only " can be got from Immigration in Thailand " ?

I want to do it in KL, but I'm not sure if they can/will do it.

How can I get 15 months on my current visa? Or did I make a mistake when I applied? It was issued for one year should I have asked for 15 months?

  12. So what is it exactly for married men? 40.000 per month or 400.000 in bank account?

Yes. 40,000 monthly income or 400,000 Baht in a Thai Bank for 2 months before you apply.

Thanks, seems the 400K route would be more convenient.

I am a Brit with a Thai wife; I have extended my non imm "O" visa before both with employment in Thailand and with 400k in the bank. One new rule from the office in Bangkok caught me out this time. My 400k was in a joint account with my wife - this is no longer allowed. I have been given 60 days extension instead of the year I asked for, and told to show the Account in my name only when I return.

I have tried to get extension with a letter of employment showing sufficient income from my new company - now in Malaysia. I was told this must be 'endorsed' (my understanding of indistinct translation by my wife) by the Malaysian embassy. They have never had the request before. They said they cannot verify or guarantee the letter - try the ministry in Malaysia. The immigration officer could not tell me what I needed (or it seems, what she was looking for on the letter).

Has any one jumped this hurdle before? Income from a company outside Thailand?
