  1. Hi All,

the wife had to sacrifice her lunch break to come as well. Then we could not get in and the owner failed to take the agent's phone calls.

This is a good deal - the condo owner is certainly under water (54 m / 7,000 Baht rent) so I'm a bit suspicious that this is an underhanded way to keep unwanted competition away while someone is scrambling to raise the money for the security deposit.

Is such conduct common over here?

I mean - the owner used to live there at some point himself, so he should know how many keys it takes to enter the condo for showing?

    Amazing Thailand!

    ***

So we looked at a town house, the rent is 6,500.

Very annoying loud dog next door, otherwise nice neighborhood. The owner had the house all renovated for some farang who never signed the lease. then left it vacant for "a year". No moving in special, no sign, no advertising.

    ***

A relative I never met is in financial distress in Udon Thani. So we were offered some land in that town complete with a ramshackle, neglected old home. Here the amount needed to let them do what they want is behind the asking price. forget FMV or any attempt to price the property aggressively to make that all important sale happen. Instead, it's take it or leave it, no discounts - we would rather go down in flames and have the bank foreclose and lose our credit than reduce the asking price or spent money on 5 galons of paint to make the place look nicer / or have some shrubbery removed.

Elsewhere, I would expect some adjustment to market reality, like seen in Florida where homes are sold at 40% their 2006 value.

    Sawasdee krap!

  2. I would like to have a farang living in LOS get served some overseas court documents. From a fellow living here, I heard a court employee knocked on his door on a saturday morning. the lady was wearing motorcycle gloves and spoke little english. Seems she works for the Thai Courts and acts like a bailiff or messenger?

Just wondering as collecting debts seems to be a never ending story in LOS and elsewhere.

Would be nice if it was that e a s y to have civil papers from a say German court served over here.

  3. Well, this criminal organization also has a friendly elderly British guy callign to extract additional information. Besides the 419 advance payment scam, these people are out to do some phishing as well.

No documents so far - just a bank account in Malaysia. They try to find a biker dumb and greedy enough to send 390,000 for a mint 2010 Honda Fury. The bike looks okay - and the owner is likely to have no clue about this scam.

    Be suspicious and ride safely!

  4. Chocdee, this must be very painful for you.

Loss will teach her your value - go away for a month or two, stay incommunicado and watch the money, make arrangements what you keep something for yourself.

You just being the paymaster, is that what you accept as your role from now till the day you die?

I have a friend who is over 60 and very hen pecked. The wife's brothers all expect a salary from him (!) and all these freeloaders and hanger-ons make me sick.

When things stay as they are, you might as well end it - and start all over again. She needs to RESPECT you, or else who are just a breathing ATM.

a separation might rattle her a bit.

    Good luck and take care

  5. Please not Richard saying "below 250 cc". But bureaucRATS will continue to find ways to accomplish their mercantilistic goals and selfish agenda. (Never mind the 1960s trucks belching Diesel fumes, let's enforce Euro 3 emissions standards on all bikes. These bikes require regulated catalytic converters...

Seeing the import framework makes me feel sick in my stomach.

One way or another, many people will lose their livelihood and growth will be lower.

  6. So - the "agent" is is Malaysia, the seller in Cyprus. Now the plot thickens. The shipping agent is now also in Cyprus... See the e-mail they sent me:

There won't be such a company at this location... Just be aware of such scams and do not fall for them.

  7. I was shocked to learn that this is a normal and often asked question. Is this how the female population sees marriage to a farang? That there should be some financial reward for putting up with an older, ugly farang?

Just asking. (We share living expenses - and I scoffed when an old man I know confessed to paying an annual sum to his wife.) No payment was asked - but the whole concept seems to be deeply rooted in society.

these friends all have good jobs. I'm just wondering if sin sod and tong mun (spelling?) are not the end but just the beginning AFAIK?

  8. Hi All,

MIL's lung cancer spread to the brain. she needs oxygen, is paralyzed on one half, has a catheter and MRI confirmed the diagnosis.

The hospital in Udon is understaffed, so family members need to come and wash the patient.

Maybe someone with medical knowledge can hazard a guesstimate about how much time she has left?

It is not possible to hire help to get a patient washed more often? (One of her daughters is a nurse who comes at 5 am for some of the work).

(I was not aware of an acute shortage of staff - unlike a place like Tiflis / Georgia where family must do such care tasks - or else, the patient won't get washed, period).

Closing, what is your take on the career change? Mother was born 1931 and with ongoing MBA e3xams and a good job, I'm very concerned about this. As my wife loves her job and the colleagues at work - but I cannot see them grant an extended leave (no more than 3 holidays in a row for anyone).

    Thanks,

    Chris

  9. The bike is advertised in BahtSold.

The whole set up reminds me of a Sportster advertised at a 40% discount to FMV. It's owner was transferred abroad, referring to the bike's location as "Edinburgh, England" :D .

Just wondering if such schemes are now appearting in LOS, too?

Bike? In another country. Owner: in Europe. Promise: easy import into Thailand. Test ride? :):D

  10. The shop attendant needed pocket money. And I have yet to see ice cream being sold at different prices. Often the small shops have the supermarket's prices, too.

At Suvarnabhumi, prices are in line, maybe 22 instead of 20 Baht, I forgot. But 50 is already a rip off! :D

A condo shop has an owner who habitually tries to short-change farang. After a few times, I pointed it out and it stopped.

You s a w the 50 Baht price advertised?? I doubt many Thai would accept that! :)

  11. But here, loansharking is kinda legal. MIL was payign 5% a month on a loan secured by rice fields, t a neighbor.

Landlords might hire them for tough evictions. But then, the BiB are said to do evictions for a few hundred as well.

Maybe outlaws can chill in a beautiful country with less red tape? There is safety in numbers, like in a swarm of Sardines in yesterday's nature film. No cop wil want to stop a dangerous mob of 2 dozen bikers :)

  12. My wife is making about the same as an accountant, with 8 years experience. Using SAP and working for a multi national company. But the location is Pathumthani, not central BKK.

We pay 6,000 rent for a studio, but that's Nonthaburi, not BKK. www.pgp.co.th

Shower her with gifts or pay the rent etc., when you return. Absentee lovers paying does not smell right.

I had a mate give me XXX Euros and buy his flame a netbook and other stuff like subwoofers for Kaeraoke.

then ask me to hand over thousands more...

What happened? The netbook was pawned! He's now back and with another girl. Hundreds down the drain - and ultimately, you should buy love when you can consume love. Book a flight, return to her arms, pay her rent or some crazxy mobile phone bill. Or teach her to use www.skype.com and buy the Thailand flat rate. Whatever.

Just don't start paying while being overseas!

  13. Congrats - it's a beauty, no doubt!

Will you break it in for your gf, or instruct her?

How about an additional oil change after a few hundred km, when most metal will be in the oil?

How does it compare power-wise to the Wave? A Wave is pretty amazing power wise, so I'm surprised.

Last Q: how many miles have you put on your Tiger Boxer 250 RS?

P.S.: how much is that retro listed for? Photo stealing is easy and common. I doubt Charlie is selling this one... The sale price often idicates a bike's built quality. I wouldn't buy a Platinum for 4,999 Baht :)

  14. I hear you.

PP wouldn't let me pay for a $ 385 photo lens from an eBay dealer from which I bought cameras gear worth thousands of Dollar the previous 12 months. With a credit card, that is. So they want to avoid the credit card fees? Forcing me to either have direct debit or send money from the account first?

their explanation was some "security" alert or some b.s. With XXX transactions, they ought to know by now that me and my credit card is good for the money :)

    ***

Once I transferred about $ 17,000 and they not only froze the account for many weeks but also alerted my baU.s. bank that my account was hacked into, freezing that online access as well.

    It was simply not true.

But for your wife, the real danger is the ability of buyers to reverse payments - often many weeks after a transaction. As you mentioned the Euro, set up an account and take advantage of SEPA. Germans can send payment to a UK account for a few Baht or for free. All you need is an IBAN and the BIC.

As a seller, you get hit really hard. I sold something and made a loss. The buyer was French and he wanted insurance and PP took a minimum of I think EUR 0.41 or maybe 18 Baht for each small payment he made.

PP is good for quick private payments to a friend, across borders. But for eBay business, especially for transactions of such a magnitude, I wouldn't dare do that.

Jack Nicholson provided the links, now do some reading...

One trick is that folks request goods to be sent to a "non verified address", voiding both eBay and PP protection. And on German TV, they showed a con artist with a room full of electronics who never pays for anything, as he is on welfare. Yep, it's easy - and only the decency of most people lets eBay stay in business. As there are many scams, like one where buddies oobid much higher than FMV, then they cancel the bids seconds before the auction ends.

Oh, and as a seller, you are open to bad feedback even if you can prove you sent a new article.

  15. Here are some tailors who pop up in another thread. I can vouch for the last two.

Some problems can be avoided by having a) a sample shirt and :) a c l e a r list of things you want altered.

Like very small shoulder pads / high armholes / modern cut / collar style and for pants, the crotch area (or it might be nearer your knees, I swear, making walking awkward).

http://www.moonriverbyvj.com he seems to do the work in-house, like Milan and Narin. No own experience though

Rajawongse - Near the Landmark hotel

    3. Raja's - Inside Sukhumvit soi 4

    4. Milan - Opposite Robinsons' (a little more pricey)

    5. Narin Couture - Between soi 8 and soi 10 (again, a little more pricey, forget it if you want something for under $ 450 for a suit)

  16. Howdy, I would take pains to change the oil 1 more time, like after 200 km. And always wait until the oil is warm before revving the engine - now and later

i read an article by someone who claims the piston rings will sit better when you go wild from the first mile. On my bike? Never!

Also, many gear changes and different loads (go to a hilly region) helps. Monotonous 4000 rpm for 100 km would be terrible.

How do you like the riding position? Or are you a masochist? Just kidding.

    Chris

  17. Hi Guys,

I've decided to sell most of my gear. does anyone need a Linhof Kardan 4x5" camera?

Or medium format gear? I am really motivated and not harboring illusions of high value.

Or do you know a company selling such stuff on consignment or buying it en bloc?

One digital back for all 3 camera types should work if you want to go digital.

Handling a big camera teaches the serious enthusiast some important lessons. At the end of the day,

only quality counts! Shooting like with a machine gun or fire a canon? The

cannon takes time but when you get it right, the results will be worth it!

For the Linhof, I have 4,500 in mind. For a RB 67 with back and lens ditto.

    Cheers, Chris
