Ruamchitt Travel Lodge has a nice rooftop pool.  Fair price, secure, good location.

If it's the same place, it's called Ruamchitt Plaza Hotel near Soi 15. And yes, it has a nice rooftop pool.

Would T'land be a better place without so many drunk drivers?

Would be a better place without so many just plain bad drivers, careless drivers, grossly underage drivers, untrained/unqualified drivers....the list goes on ad nauseam.

In 6 years living here, fortunately never had an encounter with a drunk driver, but have multiple encounters with the other groups on a daily basis.

    Some confusing posts.

    1) You can apply for the 5yr license up to 3 months before expiry (not your case).

    2) You can apply up to one year after expiry without additional effort/penalty.

The temporary license is valid exactly 2 years from date of application/test and not up to your birthday.

So it depends when the poster did his temporary and when his birthday is.

    No.

    Because it's the law/rules.

    1) being within 90 days of expiry date...91 days and before is a no-go at Chiang Mai Land Transport Office

  4. While I applaud the press for trying to keep the spotlight and pressure on the police and government to properly and swiftly deal with this POS, the torture of continuing to hear that nothing actually is being done is becoming unbearable. I need to stop reading these updates before I blow a fuse.

  5. I must be getting grumpy in my old age, but I never have enjoyed this holiday. Almost got in a fight with 2 backpackers who soaked me 2 days before Songkran officially began several years ago. After that, I just decided to was best for me to get outta LOS at this time of year and let everybody have their "fun". Fly out on Wednesday morning but need to go down to Loi Kroh for money exchange on Monday afternoon and will be in avoidance mode.

  6. There are lots of apartments at the upper end of Suthep Road. Most are occupied by CMU students but also some foreigners like me. Many new complexes have been built during the past 5 years. Also, very little to nil flyover noise than the main Nimman area. Only 10-15 minutes by motorbike to Nimmanheiman. I stay at Central Hill Place which is an older complex but you should be able to get a one bedroom with a separate living room there within your budget on a monthly or 3 month contract.

You sure you have an account with the NYC branch or just using their "routing" number to flow funds to your in-Thailand Bangkok Bank branch account.

To use the NYC branch routing number does not require an account with them.  Maybe they just told you to use their routing number and you assumed you have an account with them?

I stand corrected and my apologies all around for the misinformation. I am not well-versed in financial semantics and it has been over 5 years since I set this up and my memory of it is not the best.

Yes. I set up the Direct Deposit account in Thailand first and then worked with the NYC branch to have my monthly pension sent to their branch which they automatically transferred to my Direct Deposit account in Thailand. All I can say is that it has worked very well for me and I have no complaints about setting it up that way.

  8. You can open an account in the NYC branch (unless there has been a change in rules and policies in the past 5 years). And then open Direct Deposit and Savings accounts in a local branch in Thailand. The funds deposited into the NYC account will be automatically transferred to your Direct Deposit account in Thai baht at the TT conversion rate at the time of the transfer. You can then move funds over to your Savings account and withdraw funds with an ATM card. ATM cards cannot be used for Direct Deposit accounts.

I have been using this sysyem/method for 5+ years for my monthly USA government pension without a glitch. I am charged either 400 or 500 baht ($12-15) for each monthly transfer from the NYC branch to my Direct Deposit account in Thailand.

I suggest calling the staff at the NYC branch to discuss setting everything up. They were extremely helpful for me before. Good luck.

  9. Walking around the neighborhoods near my apartment has been part of my exercise program for years. Over that time, I have had several encounters with some of the local dogs but today's was the worst by far.

I was walking along a street and noticed out of the corner of my eye a Thai man and woman on a side street petting two dogs in the street. I just kept walking on but right after I passed them, the dogs came running across the street towards me gnarling and barking. I kept walking and only turned around when I could hear that they were very close. I turned around and they just kept coming until they were only a few feet from me. At that point I yelled at them and threw my arms up. They backed off some but then came again...and I reacted again. The Thai guy (who clearly was the owner of one or both of the dogs) just stood there watching with his hands on his hips and a big smirk on his face. He said a few things directwd at the dogs but made no attempt to actually control the dogs. I carry a small bag with water and I pulled it off my shoulder and swung it at the dogs when they lunged at me the 2nd time. Still the guy did nothing except point at the dogs and then at me. I started yelling at him and he just kept that stupid smirk on his face. The dogs lunged at me a 3rd time and at that point I ran at them swinging my bag and they backed off. I was incensed, not just at the dogs but actually more at the guy for doing nothing and also appearing to enjoy the whole affair. I gave him the finger and started to walk away still looking over my shoulder to see if the dogs were still coming at me...but they didn't.

That street is part of my regular walking route and I hope I don't see any of them again. But if I do and a similar incident occurs, I may totally lose my cool.
