  1. I am moving to Mae Hong Son and intend to set up internet as well as satellite or cable TV at home. I know hotels there have international TV so I imagine I will be able to as well, can anyone explain what my options would be? I would like to have CNN if possible as well as BBC, other than that don't care too much but movie channels or some English channels where U.S. shows are broadcast would be nice.

    Thanks!

  2. I would like to try and stock up on some things in Bangkok before moving up to Mae Hong Son, can anyone tell me a good shop where I can find (or best neighborhood to look for):

    - some specialty groceries, i.e. good olive oil, parmesan, maybe some canned things like anchovies?

    - cheap new or good used electric guitar and amp

    - nice suits for hot weather (tailor maybe? is that doable in a few days)

    - designer perfume, bath products

Also, is it feasible to ship some of this stuff up to MHS using Thailand's postal service? Is there some sort of preferable delivery service? Or should I just fly it up with me as excess baggage?

    thanks!!

  3. Thanks for that. The stopover issue is less about the airline and more about the stopover country's pet import requirements. Apparently even if your pet is only transiting many countries have all kinds of customs requirements. I am already overwhelmed dealing with Thailand's import rules, I am too worried about trying to deal with another country's!

The cats would be on the plane with me, so I'm not worried about the stopover except to the degree that it exposes us to a risk of yet another opportunity to face problems with customs authorities. It appears Thai is the only airline that goes nonstop from US, so if we can't get on one of their flights I guess stopover might be unavoidable :o

    thanks!

  4. I am facing some complications trying to plan to move my two kitties from the U.S. to Thailand. This forum has been tremendously helpful but I need some advice.

I have read here that it is best to try and fly direct to Thailand and avoid stopovers in different countries, because my cats could face restrictions there as well in addition to those I already have to deal with for Thailand's authorities. The only problem is, it appears Thai Airways is the only airline that goes direct from the U.S. (where I am currently) to Thailand, and my cat is likely overweight for their restrictions. (When I called them they said the limit for pets in cabin is 15 lbs including the kennel, and my cat is just under 15 lbs - and I won't fly her unless she's in the cabin with me.)

So either she goes on a flash diet (and I'm not too confident in success on that!), or we'll have no choice but to have a stopover. So my question is: which country is least difficult with their pet transit rules? Korea, Taiwan, and Japan are the places most airlines stop in.

I appreciate any feedback, esp. from anyone who transited through one of these countries with pets *as carry-on*.

    thanks!

  5. Hello, I just accepted a job in Mae Hong Son and will be moving there in a couple of months. I am bringing two cats along with me so am really trying to find out if I will be able to get cat food there, and especially cat litter. I heard there is some sort of dept. store in MHS where one can find some foreign products, including cat food, but does anyone know if they have any variety, and whether there is litter?

Also, can one find good olive oil in MHS? What about cheese? I'm trying to think of things that tend to be my staples, though of course I will adapt to the local cuisine as well. Wine? 100% fruit juices? Pasta (as opposed to noodles)?

If these things are available, are they horrendously expensive?

If they aren't available in MHS, are they available in Chiang Mai?

Thanks a lot for your feedback!
