Don't do it! For every Thai person who wants to go north to China there are at least 20 Chinese people who want to go south to Thailand. Or, on full scale, 70 million Thai people at one end and more than 1.4 billion Chinese at the other. Don't do it!

Unfortunate Laos. So far from Heaven; so close to China.

And how many real democracies are there in the world where even a large group of ordinary people have any actual effect on governance? Governments appear to run from mere lip service to citizen participation to outright dictatorships that do not tolerate any citizen input whatsoever.

No questions about insurance whatsoever. As I understand a non-b does not need he health insurance but I was concerned that they would require it anyway and my Tricare coverage does not meet the Thai requirements so now I am good to go. Bottom line insurance on my extension is not needed
Why does Tricare fail to meet requirements? There is no limit on payouts as far as I know.

I would have thought that the only farang teachers coming are for high salary international schools, I can't imagine any going to that expense and hoop jumping for a 35k gov. school job... No doubt some sort of deal over the quarantine hotel,(read camping in a football stadium) for the Filipinos who will, I'm sure be most of the numbers...
Actually PhDs in the USA often (perhaps usually) can find only adjunct positions that pay by the class. Lucky to get 6 classes a year. In Thailand a teacher with a BA or preferably an MA can usually get a 12 month contract. Compare cost of living and a BA grad in Thailand is often better off than a PhD grad in the USA.

In spite of all the rants, raves and whinging the Thai legal system is much more like than unlike others in the world. Mass murderers are protected while truth tellers are imprisoned. Swindlers and war criminals receive pardons while petty criminals receive lengthy sentences. Some who would have likely been hanged at Nuremberg instead receive lifetime appointments as judges or tenured university positions. Other than the death of the unfortunate Sergeant Major this is rather a minor case in world jurisprudence.

I taught both my now adult children to play Scrabble.
Perhaps then Mr. Rooster you can shed some light on the subject. I was reading on-line a highly vituperative discussion on the relative intelligence of races. One participant introduced into evidence, or perhaps counter-evidence, the "fact" that nearly all high level scrabble tournaments in Europe both Anglophone and Francophone are now totally dominated by West Africans. Is this true?

Some Christians.
Principally Catholic Christians who were (and in some quarters still are) derided by Protestant Christians as "Idolaters":

And many Muslims regard the Trinitarian concept of Christian Deity as polytheistic.

If you are using a US issued card with a bank set daily limit the changeover time from one banking day to the next is usually midnight in the US. For example: in the winter while the eastern US is on standard time the changeover is at noon Thai time. Visit the ATM a few minutes before noon then again a few minutes after noon. (Naturally you can't do this everyday! And if your bank is in another time zone adjustment has to be made.)

You know you have been in Thailand too long when you spend an inordinate amount of time looking at a person trying to decide if he (or she but particularly a man) is Asian or European.

It now appears that Mr. Trump will in fact keep some of his campaign promises though perhaps not as he envisioned keeping them. Withdraw from useless wars. Afghanistan? Iraq? Absolutely, but because the US is being evicted not because the US is voluntarily withdrawing. Normalize relations with Russia? Of course. While the US has been expending treasure on useless wars (pallets of $100 bills anyone?) the Russians have developed weapons that have rendered the USA a second rate military power. Can’t intimidate them any more so maybe the US should try friendship and diplomacy. What a brilliant politician. He tricked the Deep State into doing what he wanted to accomplish by letting them do what they wanted.

It would be nice if there was a "snowbird visa" that would allow a 6 month stay to escape the northern winters. The danger with a 90 day non-imm visa with extension in Thailand is that an airline might not allow you to board. The best choice seems to be the 1 year non-imm for family visit (if appropriate) and do a border run shortly before the 90 day point.

I sometimes get the impression that the tightening of visa regs is a subtle hint that foreigners really ought to get an Elite visa.

a Thai who speaks perfect English and even the worst American education?

Assuming you have both the desire and the funds to continue study why not assure the U. that next semester you will enroll in enough courses to become a full time student. You and your faculty advisor could visit the dean of your faculty and explain that you took a light course load to be certain you could successfully do university level work at a Thai university. Universities want students to remain and be successful.

If you have the time you might return to Thailand by way of Pakse and Champasak and while there visit Wat Phou which is probably the easternmost Khmer temple in the string of temples which are mainly in lower Isaan. There is an international bus from Pakse to Ubon.

Advanced member and you really think you have been forgiven??!!
-
Learned to speak Thai. Almost 5 years in Thailand and to my shame, cant say much more than hello and thank you.
Not messed around with one of my former Thai female work colleagues because it has taken wifey about 4 years to properly forgive me!!
And looking back the work colleague wasn't worth it anyway - the grass is hardly ever greener.
I also wished I had traveled more.
Now very settled with job, wife, kid we don't get much chance to travel around Thailand.
And finally, fresh off the plane, wish I hadn't let the farang real estate agent rip me off on a house rental, but I was a newbie and didn't know any better!
Generally speaking though there aint too much I would change.

Another spewing of drivel. These people just don't get it. You have democracy or non democracy, Not controlled democracy, not selective democracy. It democracy or not at all. It seems a daily occurrence that the media (Nation) from the government are telling people what is to come. This article is laughable.
Perhaps a better adjective would be pseudo rather than controlled.

Political parties in Thailand can be bought? No different from the good ol' US of A where the political parties can be and presently are bought by a fiction called the 'campaign contribution.' Anyone with two brain cells to rub together can clearly see that all major political decisions in the US are dictated by the 0.01%.
Even some college professors can see it.

I hope that the autopsy will show that this was a stillborn baby and she didn't kill it.
But it shows the complete lack of responsibility between a lot of Thai males.
Everything for their own satisfaction and complete disregard for other people.
I hear every day of husbands/bfs, leaving their partners with kids and never give a damn how they survive.
Even the courts are unable to force these people to contribute to their obligations.
We hear about family bond in Thailand.
This is all face.
In reality they only care about themselves.
That is why, I'm saying and believe that these people and their so called culture is nothing else but superficial with no depth or understanding of any responsibilities.
Just face.
Unfortunately disregard for the welfare and economic well being of abandoned wife and children is not the fault of only one group of men. Farang men also do this even when legally married to the Thai woman and some Thai-Chinese men have also abandoned families particularly when the mother is ethnic Thai. While one group of men may be somewhat more callous than others, all can be quite selfish and unfeeling. They have spread their seed upon fertile fields and now it is time to find new fields to sow. Perhaps DNA evidence coupled with some changes to the legal code to permit the aggressive pursuit of absconding fathers can end this disgraceful practice. (Of course DNA evidence may also absolve some of the accused miscreants.)

With seventy million people in Thailand at one end of high speed rail and one and one half billion people in China at the other end what could possibly go wrong?
