  1. Its rather interesting, that he went into fine details about everything, just not the purpose of the money and the reasons for extra money.

Yes that is why there is a cloud hanging over the whole deal. Was it really for rent or was that just a cover story for some other sort of payment? Until that is satisfactorily explained i reserve judgement.

    Me too.

I'm very sorry for the man and I condemned violence. I hope he will be fine soon and I regret he had to suffer such a bad experience. But he went public so I would like to have the missing details.

And as crooked as things are in Thailand it seems strange that this theft and bashing was done in full view of many witnesses.

The more Thai way would have been hiring someone to rob him on the way to the meeting when the cash was in hand.

I find you unfair with people here. There are, indeed, a few things to understand when you make business with locals. But I can see a lot more of success stories than beating/robbery in this country, so something went wrong somewhere. What we see is the result of an unbalanced or unsatisfying commercial negotiation. Something went wrong and didn't please one of the part. I want to know why.

Still nothing surprises me so it is possible that it is true but the jury is still out on this one.

    Me too.

Regards to the noise made around this story and who the Danish man is, this can be quite an important matter for us. There are talks everywhere in Thailand in the expact community, and there are articles in the European medias. The Danish man is not anybody and is supposed to be someone smart, quite successful, and respectable. The Pattaya family is not totally unknown too and seems to be quite successful in their business too. I have friends working for them and I can see a lot of people working with them as well.

So, I would like to know the following details:

    - What exactly is the Business of this man? Is it something legal?

    - What was this money EXACTLY for? Did he ask for a discount in exchange of a cash payment? What was the reason of the last minute surge of amount?

  2. The full story explains quite clearly that it was a cash payment for one year's rent.

I strongly suspect it, but it's still an hypothesis. Cannot be sure at 100%. Furthermore, I would like to know if he asked for a too strong discount in exchange of a cahs payment because it can be a reason the situation slipped.

In that case the nature of his business is not relevant, I think.

It is. Strongly. Especially in this part of Pattaya. Especially for a foreigner.

If the guy transferred the money electronically he would still be out the money but would have avoided a beating.

    Yes, indeed.

If he had transferred the money electronically he would have proof that the recipient had it. And based on that he could complain to the police that he hadnt got whatever he was expecting to get in return.

No. Depends of the business. That's the whole point.

Why don't we know his business? We know his name, the name of the other person concerned and her family, but we don't know his business. Why?

That's the whole point of doing it through a bank.

    I still have my questions:

What exactly is the Business of this man? Is it something legal?

What was this money exactly for? And did he ask for a discount in exchange of a cash payment?

  4. Hubby was late once with his 90 day report in Chiang Mai. They did put a stamp in his passport, but it doesn't say "overstay", it says he was late in submitting his 90 day report. Even if you don't read Thai, you'd get an idea that was the problem because the text on the stamp contains the word 90 วัน and it shows a fine of 2,000 บาท with the number "2000" written into a blank on the stamp. Could have different stamp for different provinces, though, but the word "overstay" isn't used anywhere.

Incidentally, I discovered Hubby was late for his report when I was getting ready to do mine. So I bundled him up and we went together for him to pay his fine. After that, I've been doing the 90 day reports for both of us since we're now back on the same schedule for 90 day reports. Won't be if one of us travels out of Thailand without the other, but meanwhile he can forget about remembering to do his 90 day reports as long as we're "in sync".

Yes, I have these characters on the stamp. I don't know why somebody there told me "overstay" when I asked what the stamp was... I will try to be better the next time and yes, letters seem to be a nice solution.

  5. Be careful. I just had an overstay stamp in my passport because I went to report 1 day too late to the Pattaya Immigration on last Tuesday. I paid the 2,000 Baht fine AND they wrote something in my passport. I cannot read the Thai letters but my wife said it means "Fine for OVERSTAY".

Because I move the company office and the family home to Bangkok, I had to update the WP address. So I gave my passport to my accountant to update my Work Permit address. It's an important process because I cannot do anything without the WP and the company is on stand bye during that time. But last week, it took longer than expected and I could have my passport back only during last Saturday. The immigration was closed on Monday the 25th for Macha Bucha. So when I went there on Tuesday the 26th instead of the 18th, I was 8 days late for my report. The immigration officer didn't want to hear anything about the WP and the Bank Holliday. Now I have this stamp on my passport. It's a new passport, so everybody will see this stamp during almost 10 years. I have no idea about the consequences.

I will go on Monday to the Bangkok Immigration Office to notify them about my new address here. I hope it will be OK with them.

Between the Company, the Work Permit and the Visa, sometimes I find the paper work a little bit difficult.

  6. Hi

We just moved to Bangkok Ratchada 36. I'm quite new to Bangkok, and totally new this area.

We will be happy to send our 2 years old daughter Lora to a pre-school. She is Thai/French, but learns English and Thai. She needs to socialize now. It will be good for her, and it will help her mother a lot. But except some websites I found in the Internet, I didn't find anything very precise.

For example, I found websites for the Grace school in Lat Phrao road, and the British Early Years Center. I know there are some Thai solutions too but I cannot find names and locations.

Is there anybody living in the area who can advise me where I can find a good place for my daughter?

Thank you very much for your coming advises :)

    Cheers

    S.L.

  7. Hi everyone

I considering moving my company office from Nongprue to Bangkok because I have difficulties to find IT Staff around Pattaya.

So I will need to update the company address. And there's the work permit. Some tells me I have to stop my previous WP and make a new one. Some tells me I can just update the address.

I'm actually a little bit lost with all these administrative details.

If someone could enlight me here, or advise me a good contact around Bangkok Ratchada, I will be very happy.

Thanks and all the best to everyone for 2013 :)

  8. I will ask some lawyer and the immigration officer if I can move my Visa to my daughter instead of my wife because of the problems it makes in our couple.

I just hope they will not take offence and terminate my actual Visa (or refuse to extend it) as the Pattaya immigration obviously doesn't like foreigners "trying to stay". They make me sign more forms every year. The last time I had to sign a new one, where I had to swear I will inform them in total emergency if my situation changes (meaning "if you break with your wife you have go away the day after, please sign here to say you understand"). It, indeed, creates great precariousness and can potentially damage everything I have here (company, work permit and Visa).

So in these conditions, I would prefer my Visa to be on my daughter. If somebody made it before, please contact me with your advises, you will be very welcome. Thanks....

  9. JohnC , yes, it was my first impression.

Anyway I understand this is very common practice.

So the only question is :

=> if I have problems with my wife (divorce, etc...), can it be bad for me if the baby is registered under somebody's else house ?

    Thanks :)

  10. Hi

I'm on marriage Visa for a few years (non-O). This Visa relied on my wife. But this puts me in a situation of dependance and it strongly damages our marriage and relationship.

As we have a daughter, Is it possible to move the Visa on my daughter? What are the requirements, and will it still be 400,000Baht or 800,000baht to block every years?

    Thanks for your coming answers.

  11. Hi

I just noticed my daughter was written in my sister in law's blue book. My wife told me she made it because we rent and don't own the house.

Is it a normal practice? Why my daughter is not registered under my roof? If I have a problem with my wife, can it be a problem for me?

    Just asking, in case...

    Thanks for your coming answers:)

  12. Hi

Our house is near a stream and we have garden with a lot of vegetation around.

So we have a lot of bugs and pest annoying us.

The trick seems to spray a sort of white product around the house, so you don't see cockroach anymore for a while.

A friend did it for us a couple of month ago but now it seems it doesn't work anymore. And we cannot join this friend anymore. So I contacted a company and they ask me for 6,500 Baht so spray their thing around the house (!!!!!!)

Guys, how do you do for your pest and bugs problem?

Do you know where to find the product, and who to ask to spray it?

I worry a bit for the baby and the pets (2 dogs 1 cat) as it seems to be a very strong product.

Thanks for advices, I will indicate below this thread the solution I found when I will have one so it can help as well :)

  13. Sign tax has never gone away.

    What is Sign Tax?

A tax on any sign erected outside a building, office, shop, bar etc, etc, it even applies to those temporary vinyl signs you see littered along the roadsides here. If your sign is all in Thai the taxes are minimal, if the sign is in another language but has a little Thai writing then the tax is a bit higher, but if the sign is completely in a foreign language with no Thai script whatsoever...prepare to get hammered!!

The tax is applied per Square Meter and with consideration for the language/languages it is in!

Some people blindly erect a sign without knowing this - but very soon they will get a visit from the officials demanding payment.

Oh, right, I heard about it.

    Thanks for your explanations :)
