  1. When you open I will drop by and sample the goods, as a former "grill man" in a long past life I have high breakfast standards. Have you thought of adding pancakes or Belgium waffles with or without fruit and whip cream.

Although not American my grandfather came from Leeds UK and I do like a bit of black pudding :o I see the Villa carries it but have not tried it.

  2. John,

Can I have my eggs over very light. Personally I would pass on the saugages but would like a grilled tomato. Although I am American I do like the tomato. In general I find cooks in Thailand cooks eggs with to much grease/oil and usually overcook eggs overlight or sunnyside. Wheat toast? Home fry potaoes cooked on the grill instead of fryalator?

    Good Luck

  3. Great, thanks. I may go there this evening...

Go past Soi Cowboy, maybe 6 or 8 city blocks, until you come to a four way intersection,on the far left corner you will see the ChokChai steakhouse, The Crossbar is across the street. Although it is on Soi 23 it is actually a left off Soi 23 that goes to Asoke.

They also have free parking at the Sino-Thai tower, Crossbar will stamp the parking ticket.

  4. A couple of weeks ago I foun the Crossbar Pub on Suk Soi 23. The converstation with the owner got around to a good cheesburger. I said that I had never had an even decent burger in BKK. Haveing food s a hobby I suggested he should try to make. He asked for some advise and away he ran.

Today I dropped by and was pleasently suprised. Fresh good size bun, nice lettuce, red onion, a really nice tomato slice, fresh ground beef(Thai-French I was told) with well melted cheddar. The beef was good, could have a bit higher fat content for moisture but still good. Well I was more than happy, give it a try is you have a yearning for a better than averge burger. The owner

I have no interest in the pub, financial or otherwise. I just enjoyed the burger and diet coke :o

  5. I went there last year, flew to Ubon and hired a car for a few days. Seemed like a 2 hour drive over great roads for the most part. There is a Mukdahan thread on the Orient-Expat forum that tells of a new , and very reasonably priced serviced apt there. Have not seen it myself .

  6. John,

Totally agrree on the semoline. In the states I always "King Arthur" non bleached flour which produced a excellent flavor bread and pizza crust.

On another note, Hamburg. AT the Villa in my neighborhood they carry fresh ground Thai and NZ?Austrailian. Both look a little lean for a good hamburger which I think should be around 15% fat. Do you have any idea the fat content of Villa hamburg and any comment on the taste ofThai vs NZ/Aust. hamburg from the Villa? I use the term "hamburg" to mean ground beef :o

    Thanks

  7. John,

What flour are you using/can obtain in BKK for the crust? Last year I was told by the owner of Bangkok Pizza, closed now I think, that good flour was the most difficult for him to source for a good crust.

When I make Pizza at home I make the sauce out of whole italian plum tomatoes which I crush by hand, add some basil, olive oil and a bit of salt, fresh ground pepper and a touch of sugar. I then top with mozzerella and a sprinkling of parmesan. Can canned italian whole plum tomatoes be purchased in BKK?

I have also nade one with ricotta cheese in place of mozzerella that is delicious. If I cam get ripe fresh tomatoes I will cover the dought with thinly sliced tomatoes, proscuitto and some parmesan.

    Thanks for your pictorial :o

  8. I recentlly discovered a , new to me pub, The Crossbar on Suk 23 across from Chok Dai steakhouse. It is run by one of the ex partners of the Pickledliver from Soi 11. 4 or so new flat panel TV, all new interior, food etc, free parking across the street, free wifi. there web site is www.thecrossbarbangkok.com

I am trying to convince the owner to develop a really good cheesburger/hamburger. We will see how that goes.

Anyway I enjoyed the place and have no particapation in the enterprise.

  9. There is a Pizza, Pizza located on the 7th Floor of Central World. I have not been to this location, only their newer store in the Avenue Pattaya shopping complex. It is the best pizza I have had in Thailand, but I am partial to Neopolitan thin-crust pizza. Their pizza is authentic, but a little pricey at 250B small/400B large. I also really like their lemonade.

Well I ordered out Pizzamania tonight and on a scale of 1 - 10 the best I can give it is a 4, nowhere as good as Bangkok Pizza was. To be fare I had it delivered which I am sure did not help.

Last year I talked to the owner of Bangkok Pizza and he said the hardest thing to get was good flour, he used Austrailian flour claiming the local stuff just did not cut it. The most disapointing with Pizza mania was the crust, more like a bland Matzo cracker. Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

  10. I put in chok chai farm. It gave me a number of them but since most were close together I figured the main one would be the one with no number behind it. I chose that one and it says highway 2 Klang Dong, Pak Chong, Nakorn Ratchasima. That's using the ESRI map and my 2610 Street Pilot. putting in chokchai farm would not work. Using the 2610, I select find, then by name from the next screen and then type it in. It won't allow you to put in a name that isn't in the data base. It blanks out all but the valid letters. When trying to put in chokchai, it gets as far as chokcha then there are no more letters visable.

I tried with my little hand held eTrex and it wouldn't find it with either spelling. The eTrex has the Rotweiler map.

If your map came from Garmin in the US, it will be the ESRI map.

I just brought over a Garmin C330($130 US) and the Garmin/ESri map v8 ($100 US) and it is working great. My friend used it in KK with great results. I will say that looking for particular locations is only as good as the spelling, i.e how you think it is spelled vs how it is spelled in the map. Overall I am very happy with how it works

  11. I have had my car serviced at several franchisees (Sathorn = very good; Rama 4 = terrible; Ratchadaphisek = very good), but I greatly prefer the two company-owned dealers, Sri Ayutthya Road and Bangna. IMHO, no one has more to lose from mediocre service than Honda Thailand itself, so I think their own outlets are at the top in terms of service.

    Any idea if they discount?

  12. I do not know a lot about the nuances of bootleg Xbox games. My kids in the United States have an unmodified Xbox 360 Elite and was wondering if the games available at Pantip would work. Most of the games say NTSC/PAL but I am concerned they may require a "chipped" Xbox. My boys play a lot of onlib=ne games and do not want to do anything that could get there console banned.

    Any insight will be appreciated.

    Thanks

  13. Garmin Street Pilot C330 and ESRI Version 8 maps.

I just brought over two Garmin C330 from the states. I purchased them for about $130 US. I then purchased on Ebay 2 ESRI maps for $100 each. They are the Garmin part number and work really well. My friend just used his around KK and loved it. Other than trying to figure out how to get the Garmin to link to the local sats they work real well.
