Ranong (Thai ระนอง) is one of Thailand's southern provinces (changwat), located on the west coast along the Andaman Sea. It has the fewest inhabitants of any Thai provinces. Neighboring Ranong are (clockwise) Chumphon, Surat Thani and Phang Nga. To the west, it borders Kawthaung, Tanintharyi, Myanmar.

Rayong (Thai: ระยอง, pronounced [ra.jɔːŋ]) is a city (thesaban nakhon) located on the shore of the gulf of Thailand, in the eastcoast region of Thailand. It is the capital of Rayong Province, and covers the tambon Tha Pradu and Pak Nam and parts of tambon Choeng Noen and Noen Phra, all within Mueang Rayong district. As of 2005 the population was 54,641. Main industry is fishing, and it is the main producer of Thailand's fish sauce. It is also a center for the chemicals and auto industries. In 2012 Ford Motor Company opened an assembly plant in Rayong to expand Ford's presence in the ASEAN area, employing some 2,200 people.[1]

  2. Have to agree with JAFO above. No lawyer needed if you follow the web page for the BKK embassy and of average intelligence. My wife's and my application for a green card took 4 1/2 months from start to finish, normal processing. The web page from the embassy is easy to understand and do. Pay attention to details. Get any needed Thai documents translated by a true translator. The only problem we had was an improperly translated Thai divorce decree (done by a lawyer in Phuket for 2000 THB)the intake clerk lady said it was wrong. New document was 400 THB on the second floor of the same building as the turn in office.

the web page said to make an appointment. They don't do appointments for the initial submission. Spell out everything fully (i.e. use Nahkon Ratchasima vice Korat.) you can correct minor errors with white out and a pen

Things that must be done in BKK.

    1) Initial turn in at USIC

    2) Police certification (SIB only place, address in instruction), can tip 200 baht for expedited return (EMS)can do same day as visit for turn in at usics if time permits so start early. Not sure if kids have to do.

    3) Medical can only by hospitals on the papers (don't know if it can be done in Chiang Mai or not.

keep all original paper and translations and copies in separate packets (2 hole punched at the top, use ACCO binders, and in the listed order with tabs to locate easily. I had original documents, and three copies. keep every thing separate and easy to locate.

The major first step is the initial application and is the most important. Start when they open and ours took only 5 hours including 2 1/2 hours for a new translation. Organization helps!

Step 2: A few weeks (ours took 8 days) later they will send packet 1 to you, just follow the instructions. Organize the documents in the listed order, same as the original same as before (2 hole punch, binders, tabs and EMS back.).

Step 3: A few weeks (ours took 6 weeks) later they will send packet 2 to you, just follow the instructions. This is when the medical is done. Organize the documents in the listed order, same as the original same as before (2 hole punch, binders, tabs) and EMS back. We did medical at Baumregard (SP?) hospital. About 4 hours escorted service with several stops. Can get the shots ahead of the hospital visit (bring any shot documents) to save $$.

Step 4: Go for the dreaded interview. May have an interpreter, But probably not needed. Husband not allowed in the waiting room. The interview was straight forward (of 12 ladies interviewed only one was turned down). She was dressed like a poster girl for "Bimbos R Us". Have wife DRESS professionally, easy on the makeup. If approved, she will leave her passport there and it will be mailed (EMS).

    Good Luck!!

  3. Bingo. The advantage is that if you log in you only have to select it one time, and you must deselect the default to avoid the charge. If you back up you need to check everything again, to avoid surprises. A low budget airline trick, but keep track of the charges on the right before you enter the CC info.

  4. Well, it really depends on what you consider to be Bangkok. Go past BKK airport until you get to the outer ring road (9) and take it south (left), loop around Bangkok to the south and take highway 35 west through Samut Sakhon until you get to highway 4. Head north through Ratchaburi and then into Nakhom Pathom from the west. The shorter route (distance wise) would be to follow the outer ring road north to highway 4 and go west (left) on 4 into Nakhom Pathom. The shorter distance is on suface street (traffic, lights, slow) while the longer is all major highways. You may be able to turn north off of 35 onto highway 3097 a little past Samut Sakhon and shorten the distance, but I have never driven that route or the road conditions. Up to you. Have a safe drive.

Edit: there may be other ways but I haven't driven them and I like major roads. Maybe there are other routes.

  5. Thanks for any help you can provide.

I am from the US and hold a Non Imm-O multiple entry visa based on marriage to a Thai (de facto and de jure). I entered LOS on 18 April using my O visa but the BKK Immigration gave me a permission to stay stamp through 20 November based on a reentry permit of a Non Imm-B visa extension (X3) despite my pointing out that it was a different visa. I made my 90 day report in July and again pointed out the Non Imm O but submitting a copy with the 90 day reportand they said mai pen rai, see you in October. Today Phuket Immigration would not allow me to change the reason for extension to a 60 day extension for visiting my wife, for when I finish my job on Monday. It is in fact finished today but my ex-employer won't be able to cancel my work permit until Monday. It is not a friendly departure, due to him being caught in a huge lie and huge loss of face, and me quitting because of it. I did finish the school year (3 days) after I quit, because it was the right thing to do. He has paid me in full and says it's over but I don't trust him not to try to screw me.

I would like information to see what the members think about my pre-emptive strike. If I fly Phuket to KL on Sunday using the fight that arrives at 10:35 will I have time to clear immigration (visa exempt entry) and customs (no baggage) at KL and then checkin again for the return flight at 12:45? Has anybody done this? Or would waiting for the 20:30 flight be a surer bet? I don't really want to wait at the airport for 10 hours but I am a patient person, and could do it if plan A is cutting it too close.

This would give me a new 90 day stay and I'm leaving in November anyway so I will not really need to deal with the Phuket immigration except at the airport, and remove the possibility that my former employer trying to "influence" the Immigration officer in Phuket town. The extension costs 1900 B and the flight about 4200 B, but it's worth it to be somewhat in control of my plans and to see the look on my ex-bosses face when Immigration tells him that I effectively killed the Non Imm B and work permit by leaving Thailand without a reentry permit, and am good for another 90 days, which again is more than I need. Returning to the US, with wife for a couple of years.

Any visible holes in my plan?

Again, thanks for any help the members can provide.

  6. I beleive that the SSN will trump the ITIN if he has immigrated to the US. If not you would want to get the ITIN so as to claim the deduction for the dependent. I have tried for the past 3 tax filings to get an ITIN for my wife but they keep rejecting it even though I have sent in the proof required but they say they want something else each time even though the W7 instructions say that a notarized copy of the passport is the only stand alone document. This has caused my return to be incorrect and therefore have penalties added. I an going to go to the IRS office in November and try to get them to issue one for these by showing them the actual documents and then file a 1040x for each of the tax years in question. Hopefully, but I doubt it, they will also return the penalties, when they see the errors they have made. I am going to do this despite the fact that on the date that I see them, my wife will be getting the SSN issued from executing her IR-1 visa. I would recommend filing the W7 prior to you filing your returns to prevent them from changing your status and deductions. If they don't give your spouse an SSN your status becomes single vice married filing jointly or seperately. It might make a difference if you have other dependents, but I don't.

  7. I tend to disagree, as I have had mostly good experiences on their flights and have received timely resolutions for the times when I have had problems. Last year, I got stuck in ATL overnight due to a flight cancellation due to weather. Even thought they didn't have to (actual weater delay at my destination), they put me up at the Marriott and upgraded me to first class for the last leg the next day. They also gave me 25,000 "inconvenience" miles. They upgraded my return to BKK (on a different itenerary) to first class as well.

4 years ago, the Delta office in BKK made a mistake when I changed an iteneray via phone, through them for a flight from TPE-LAX-MSY. I was in LOS on a TPE-BKK-TPE China Airlines Ticket (via Delta), The ticket was originally a paper ticket for the TPE-Lax leg via CAL. They sent me an E-ticket for the new itenerary and the email said to destroy the paper tickets as they were now cancelled. I didn't destroy the tickets, but I didn't take them with me. When checking in with CAL, with me E-ticket the CAL staff told me that TPE does not yet use E-tickets for international flights and they needed to have the paper tickets or buy a new ticket on the spot if I wanted to take that flight. I unhappily paid for another ticket at the higher last minute price ($1750 USD more) and had the same seats listed on my E-ticket. After arriving home I called the skymiles number and explained the situation and the lady I was talking to could see on the computer where the BKK office had cancelled the paper tickets and improperly issued the e-ticket. She asked if someone could call me back within the hour. In about 30 minutes a man called from Corperate Customer Care in Atlanta and asked a few questions, about if I still had the paper tickets and the email that was sent from the BKK office. I answered yes to both but I could not supply the paper tickets as they were in Thailand and I could not get them until I returned to BKK in 3 weeks. I forwarded the email to him, and he said that yes the BKK office had made an error and that it would be refunded. I asked about the price of the last minute ticket was the amount to be refunded and he told me to fax him the charge slips. I did and two days later UPS delivered a check from Delta for $100 over the higher ticket. They upgraded me again to first class and gave me 50,000 bonus miles. I even got the first class bonus miles as well.

I don't know if they did all of this because I'm an especially nice (and modest) guy or that I have held Platinum level for more than 15 years. They have done all right by me. There are inconveniences beyond their control and I get upset at the time of the problem, but I maintain a civil (but persistant) attitude and usually get satisfactory results.

  8. I think the only customer service in LOS is located in BKK. Phone # 026143020 or Amy at 091396534. These numbers are about 18 months old, but they are the office numbers and Amy speaks English well. The Delta office in BKK has been helpful for me in the past.

If not allowed to post phone numbers PM me and I'll try again.

Edit: I went ahead and PM numbers as I have to go out.

  9. B S apartment hotel, 700 baht a night. Same side of the expressway as Future Park towards Don Muang Airport, near Rangsit General Hospital. Next to Zeer Rangsit behind the MacDonalds, oppisite CarreFour. A bit of a dump, but mostly clean, but if you are mainly just looking for a place to sleep its ok. I have stayed there for 3-4 days at a time about 10 times.

  10. Today the school I am working at suffered the results of people not having proper visas and work permits. Despite my numerous and mostly ignored complaints to the company that provides teachers to a school in Phuket's English Program, 2 of these misfits did not show up today and have left their students hanging. The two classes are supposed to be taking semester finals next week may not have anyone to prepare them. These two classes have had the misfortune of having multiple, unreliable, unqualified individuals assigned as their "teacher" in the past 4 months. I know that the problem is not with the students, as I have taught every one of them in the years past, as well as filled in for missing bodies on numerous occasions this semester. The problem is that the providing company continues to stick any one that says they will show up into the classroom. The next to the last indiviual in the teachers spot only lasted two weeks and took more sick days (5) in those two weeks than I have taken in 4 years (0).

I for one (of two) teachers (of 7) that have proper visas and work permits, find this continued disregard of the students education appalling by the company that provides the teachers, the school that allows them to put the unqualified people in classroom, but most of all for the wannabees that don't give a flip about destroying these kids education. Both classes are about 1/3 behind the other 5 classes in the program and nobody seems to care.

Today I told both classes to tell their parents that they did not have a foreign teacher for their classes and for the parents to call the Mayor, the Governor, the principal and the owner of the company who provides these uncaring individuals. I also gave them all of the phone numbers. I stayed late at school today and about 30 minutes after the kids went home, the phone calls started and many parents came to the school to confront the principal. Some of them were not following the ususal Thai characteristic of being non-confrontational. I was pleased that not too many of the kids passed on where they got the information, as I told them it had to be kept a secret. I know that some of the parents knew it was me, but did not tell the principal. Several of them thanked me for letting them know their was a problem. I think tommorow the brown stuff may hit the fan. I may get canned but, I am already a planned loss at the next semester break.

I hope that this is fixed for the student's sake and that somebody who will do or say anything will think before they illegaly take a job that they are not interested in or qualified for, just to be able to stay in LOS to be able to purchase some regular attention from the ladies.

The authorities do need to crackdown on these people and even more so to the many school companies that have the same practice and school administrators that turn a blind eye to the practice and allow it to continue. This problem needs to be fixed, at all levels, because these kids are the future of Thailand and a good education can give them the tools that are needed to make change in the future.

I hate changing rules, but I fully support the crackdown on back-to-back tourist visa people who are illegally working. For the b2b visa folks who are not working illegally, I regret the inconvenience that you must be going through and hope that when most of the illegals are weeded out that things will go back to as before.

    Venting complete. Thanks.

  11. Agar agar is a seaweed based gelatin. I have seen it in Lotus, Big C, etc. It is usually near the baking items and gelatins. It is grayish brown kind of semi transparent chunks. There is also a granulated form in theses store. Not sure about the additives that may or may not be in either. Not much different than gelatin (non flavored). A mostly Chinese food store should have it as well. My wife uses it to make a sweet coconut gelatin type dessert. The granulated powder packets have Agar Agar in English on them but I don't know the Thai words.

Miso depends on what form you want. The above stores have some miso soup powder but I don't recall seeing the miso paste (yellowish brown to yellowish cream in color) which you can make real miso soup from, as opposed to the instant powder. The section in Carrefour that has the Japanese foo imports may have it, located near the first row of refrigerated/frozen food shelves. The bag is clear and can see the paste inside if they have it. It looks kind of like a yellow curry paste.

Edit 2: the Thai word is "wóon" per wikipedia. All part of the service.

  12. The pump should be turning on and off controlled by a pressure switch that cuts the power when the upper setting is reached and starts the pump when the lower setting is reached. This looks like a set of electrical contact points that have a bellows assembly moving the points. The bellows assembly should have a small water tube from the discharge side of the pump to the bellows. This line could be clogged with debris causing the problem. Also, the bellows assembly could be stuck or jammed by debris/corrosion. Spray with WD40 or a similar product. and see if that helps. If this is okay, the range of the pressure switch is usually adjustable by turning a screw to move the contacts closer to each other. Oh, by the way, turn the power off before checking these things. Maybe I should have told you that first.

  13. I doubt that military facilities would accept a non-DOD/US government sponsered patient for treatment of an illness. They might accept one in a local (to the facility) emergency trauma case but it would still cost a lot. Even US military retirees sometimes have difficulty using US military medical facitlities being lower priority to Active duty service members. their dependents and DOD sponsored civilians.

To find Guam, draw a line from Bangkok to Hawaii on a globe, and it is about halfway between the two. Or use Google Earth and type in Guam, which is small, but a nice (though boring) place to visit. It is a long way from everywhere.

  14. I was just wandering if there has been any news. The item in the Phuket Gazette (9/1/09) indicated that the increase would be announced on 9/13. My Thai employer says that he hasn't heard of the original report let alone an update. I am not concerned because I'm leaving work as soon as my employer grows the stones to try and fire me, mostly to test the severence pay theory. It' just so hard for him to make a decision. I know that from past experience, he will make a beeline to immigration, but little does he know I changed from a Non-Imm B to a Non-Imm O (based on marriage) and that the Labor Office has been notified so that I am still legally working.
