President Biden’s fiery speech in Philadelphia denouncing former President Donald Trump and what he described as “extreme MAGA ideology” has sparked online calls for violence, including death threats against the president, according to documents obtained by Yahoo News. Biden’s remarks also prompted immediate concerns from senior counterterrorism officials who said they fear that calling Trump supporters extremists would be viewed as a call to arms and would only inflame an already volatile threat environment. “Too much of what’s happening in our country today is not normal,” Biden said Thursday night at Independence Hall, flanked by two U.S. Marines. “Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans represent an extremism that threatens the very foundations of our republic.” (more) https://news.yahoo.com/biden-speech-denouncing-trump-maga-ideology-sparks-threats-calls-for-violence-003139767.html

Scrutiny builds over FBI’s discovery of empty folders at Mar-a-Lago Among the material allegedly seized from former President Trump’s home were numerous empty folders that once contained classified information or intel designated to be returned to the military, renewing questions over fallout from the potential mishandling of records and if they have since been recovered. In an inventory from the Justice Department unsealed by a judge Friday, the government detailed that interspersed with Trump’s personal belongings were 48 empty folders with classified banners as well as another 42 empty folders that were labeled “return to staff secretary/military aide,” according to the filing. ... It’s not clear if the materials the folders once housed are elsewhere in the boxes of recovered evidence, but experts say the suite of questions the detail raises argues in favor of allowing the Justice Department to continue its investigation, even as Trump seeks to stall its progress. WASHINGTON, Sept 2 (Reuters) - The FBI recovered more than 11,000 government documents and photographs during its Aug. 8 search at former President Donald Trump's Florida estate, as well as 48 empty folders labeled as "classified," according to court records that were unsealed on Friday. The unsealing by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon in West Palm Beach came one day after she heard oral arguments by Trump's attorneys and the Justice Department's top two counterintelligence prosecutors over whether she should appoint a special master to conduct a privilege review of the seized materials at Trump's request. Cannon deferred ruling immediately on whether to appoint a special master but said she would agree to unseal two records filed by the Justice Department. CDC recommends updated Covid-19 boosters ... "The new shots can only be used as a booster for people who have had a primary series of vaccines. It is not authorized for use as a primary series. With the authorization of these boosters, the FDA suspended the authorizations for the previous boosters produced by Pfizer and Moderna. Those monovalent (one strain) boosters can no longer be given in this country, except in children who are too young to receive one of the bivalent boosters. ... Daniel McQuillen, president of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, said his group applauds ACIP’s recommendations. “Covid-19 is not over. Nearly 400 people die from Covid every day, and almost 5,000 people are currently hospitalized with Covid,” he said in a statement." EU regulator approves first Covid booster shots targeting Omicron variant "The European Union's drug regulator on Thursday backed two separate Covid-19 vaccine boosters updated to target the Omicron variant and developed by Moderna and the team of Pfizer and BioNTech. Europe is preparing to roll out shots ahead of an anticipated rise in infections this winter. The new so-called bivalent shots combat the BA.1 version of Omicron and the original virus first detected in China. The recommendation is to authorise the vaccines for people aged 12 years and above who have received at least primary vaccination against Covid-19, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) said. The final go-ahead will be subject to European Commission approval, which is expected to come in shortly." "The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended Thursday that millions of eligible Americans, including those as young as 12, get an updated omicron-targeting booster shot to bolster defenses against serious illness and death during a potential fall or winter rise in covid-19 cases. CDC Director Rochelle Walensky endorsed a recommendation by an advisory panel, paving the way for some clinicians, pharmacies and other providers to begin administering the shots as early as this weekend. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices voted 13-1 to recommend updated shots from Moderna, for those 18 and older, and from Pfizer-BioNTech, for people 12 and older. ... The new boosters — the first changes since the mRNA vaccines were rolled out in December 2020 — target the BA.4 and BA.5 omicron subvariants dominant in the United States." Life expectancy in the U.S. fell in 2021, for the second year in a row. It was the first time life expectancy dropped two years in a row in 100 years. In 2019, someone born in the U.S. had a life expectancy of 79 years. In 2020, because of the pandemic, that dropped to 77 years. In 2021 life-span dropped again — to 76.1 years. And for some Americans, life expectancy is even lower, according to a provisional analysis from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. ... "To have this second year crash basically wiping out the meager gains made during this century is really pretty shocking," says John Haaga, a retired division director of the National Institute on Aging. COVID-19 accounts for about half of the decline in life expectancy, while accidents and unintentional injuries, including drug overdoses, account for another 16%. COVID-19’s impact on mortality and morbidity, as well as healthcare systems, likely will continue long after the emergency phase of the pandemic ends, as researchers become more aware of the virus’s lasting health implications." https://myemail.constantcontact.com/--COVID-19-Updates---September-1--2022.html

A post with an unsourced scientific claim regarding face mask wear and COVID transmission has been removed. https://www.reuters.com/article/factcheck-coronavirus-masks-idUSL1N2ST0OO "Confusion and misinformation surrounding the efficacy of face masks appears to be widespread, with some social media users claiming face coverings don’t work or actually cause harm (here and here). Mask wearing does limit COVID-19 transmission and infection in two ways, according to real-world data, studies and several public health experts who spoke to Reuters. PREVENTING TRANSMISSION Reuters recently debunked claims about masks and lockdowns, finding they effectively slow the spread of COVID-19 (here). Several studies show mask-wearing helps reduce transmission of the virus (here, here)." (more)

Same info/details as in the text of the OP news report, just in graphic form. From my original post of the graphic: "Note that they're talking about the effectiveness of the vaccines in preventing serious illness (first % line in the graphic) and death (second % line in the graphic) -- not about the vaccines' ability to prevent asymptomatic or minor symptom infections." Unfortunately, Thai MoPH oftentimes doesn't produce their info materials in EN language form.
