  1. Microwaves are perfect for vegetables - a big plastic bowl with room for water (steamer) or two (one for spuds, one for other veg). Just 2000 baht is enough for a separate Microwave box (if you use it combined, you can't also microwave your carrots/broccoli at the same time...).

I found this out in England, dreams of doing roast chicken dinners with just a Microwave and hotplate... Expensive and not possible to microwave chicken and veg at the same time!

and the TOTAL power is limited... you cannot combine 800W Microwave 800W grill and convection with a single package.

Up to about 15,000 they're convection, not FAN ovens. (Panasonic are proud of their 'compact fanless design with top and bottom heaters and no turntable'. Google reveals that some people are angry that they don't quite live up to the 'even cooking' promises and can be worse than turntables...).

Halogen ovens are 'Turbo Fan' - you can put water in and turn them on (self cleaning) and the water will spin into a whirlpool almost. That means when you're cooking food, it's in a superheated tornado. Blows the Microwaves away!!!

Toaster ovens are what they are - okay for toast, weak excuses for a real oven. They're not a patch on the Halogen ovens.

I just cooked two Pork Loin steaks - about 1.5" thick - in 11 minutes. The result is nothing like my efforts with a combination grill/Microwave. It was simply stunning - faster than an oven - tasted so much better.

I'd say buy the Halogen cooker that has a frame - lift-up lid simply because it's safer and better. I wouldn't want to have to take off the lid and put it down somewhere (on a stand or whatever) - waste of effort and space.

Otto's top model (CO-717) has nice touch controls/digital readout and cost me 3015 in Central. Bonus - it comes with more accessories than just the internal racks. I got an extender ring (good for times you don't want the heater to brown the stuff too much) - non-stick tray, aluminium perforated tray, extender. The hinged lid and slightly higher power is well worth the extra dosh for me.

    where/how? 4000 sounds okay!

  3. I just met this business. There's nothing wrong with it, but here's my assessment.

    1. I actually use Amway's toothpaste 'Glister', roll-on and orange coloured shower gel. I don't use anything else, but these (except for the shower gel - which I keep as a premium for special showers as it costs 400 baht for 430ml) do stand out - they are genuinely extremely good.

Equivalents from Amstar - I was persuaded to take toothpaste called 'Premi' and it really did not seem a patch on Glister. It was slightly cheaper (25%) but then I'm not interested in price; I don't like it and I got an aftertaste.

Shower gel looks nice - wait for this! 300ml is 545 baht.

When being presented, I told her that I have no problem with the concept, but I'm interested in product. Part of the plan is that you must score 300PV per month (i.e. spend 1200 on yourself). The toothpaste (Amway 300 baht) is good for maybe 3 months only... and you must spend 1000 baht to get those PV. (This is not buying, it is called 'investing').

You sell the business plan, not products...

So, in essence, you make money only if you can convince people to invest 1000 per month and spend 1000 yourself. The main thrust seems to be (as it's in Thailand) Rice bran and Germ oil, health products (skin, anti-ageing etc).

Although they are 'honest', the reality is that you need to spend time interviewing, setting up meetings, supporting your network etc. My experience with L'Arome in the U.K. (with a very wealthy guy who recruited me) is that if you're not already a superbly charismatic person who is driving a topline Merc (people assume bought from the business) and living in a 16+ Million baht house, then you'll have trouble.... unless your charisma is good enough to make people see themselves as 'going there'.

Suspension of disbelief - follow the plan to get rich. It takes time. Actually, as with Amway or (with me L'Arome), a few people become regular customers if they really like something.

Women prefer buying their cosmetics in nicely lit Department stores, otherwise they're buying them with a focus on good value for money. Networking offers Dept store quality but at high prices - in a catalogue... Very hard to shift!

My choice - skip it. Your choice, don't you want more free time and money to spend?

  4. 455,000 is pretty cheap - but I really fancy the S at 429,000.

I don't think that Power Windows and a Radio are worth 26,000 baht. I think all the worthwhile features are tucked away in the top two models costing you a good 100k more.

429,000 for a car - that makes these extras seem far more expensive than if you were paying 1,400,000 for a nice car.

I did just read that there is no cabin access from the boot - those seats are fixed (something that I never saw before) meaning that you can probably get more stuck in the back of a Micra!

  5. Does anyone know the current delivery time on the manual swift?

Come on why would anyone want a manual?

short delivery time, faster, more economical, cheaper....just sucks in BK traffic!

Not only in BKK traffic.. Sucks also in hill starts, upon having to negotiate difficult progresses, and having to move up a hill.

It's okay for British people, we learn how to drive before we buy cars. I have driven autos, but for me they are not better, and as previously mentioned with a 1.2 car, the manual is cheaper and more efficient.

I'd definitely want ABS with Thai roads though...

  6. Does anyone have a 12Call data plan that they're happy with?

My friend just left me a True Netsim - which I slotted into my iphone. Wow - what a difference!

The first thing you notice is bling - a speed test showed I had 5.5GB download speed, and I posted a picture to facebook - it took me maybe 15 seconds to do a check-in!

The second thing you notice is constantly reconnecting - for me in Bangna, just going from my condo (3 bar signal strength) down to the door gets me disconnected and I have walked about 100 metres before it gets around to hooking up to True 3G again - but when you're connected it's damned good. I'd say actually worth paying for - whereas I cancelled all my net packages from AIS because they're just pants! I tried to do a check-in from Bangna-Trad road (where I get full True signal strength and speed) with 5 bar AIS signal on 3G and it took 3 attempts to get a photo to upload; long enough to miss the boat :P

I put my AIS sim in my old Nokia N70 (it just feels like a 'telephone' sim anyway) and True in the iphone... so now I have calls and internet.

Shame I didn't get a dual SIM phone...

Answering the question here - what's hard about calling 1175 and saying 'please cancel all my Net packages' ?

I asked her for a code to dial to cancel manually, and she said 'no, it's fine - I will do that for you'.

  7. cost-effective post-paid packages which include minutes, SMSes, MMSes, data (2G/3G/WiFi) which offer ~ 50% discount. Obviously if you don't make calls, send SMSes, use data then a post-paid plan is probably a waste.

Well if you can get free calls to AIS all day at for 9 baht and pay only 1 baht per minute for calls to non AIS numbers I fail to see anything cheaper, unless you're really hammering your phone to death...

When I was a fairly heavy user a few years back, I found GSM might be cheaper - but then there'd be a month or more during the year when I didn't manage to use it all up... the money wasted on the light months more than made up for money saved for me, so I have been very happy on 12Call.. and with the added benefit that I actually use less because of the way it works.... You pay to make calls, instead of need to make calls that you have to pay for whether you call or not.

Postpay for me is a strange idea suitable only really for super heavy business users. The two are not easily compared - but GSM will generally eat more money than 12Call in most cases (unless you just have the wrong plan set up, which applies in most cases... Most people have the wrong plan).

  8. Sorry - this appears to be another bucket of b***sh**.

Having recently spent some considerable time checking up dates and drafting an accurate CV - details of ten years of employment in Education along with details of extensive training (specifically including test results of 100% in the entrance examination designed by an Australian company to screen employees for it's franchise) and a further 2 years on the job training and assessment and observations... along with copies of genuine Education documents; including qualifications to professional standard from the Secretary of State of the Home department, and the DTp, TEFL, and documents from several seminars attended as evidence of further training over the last ten years......

These together with a letter from my employer stating that over the two years of part time work, training and assessment she has judged me to be a key member of her organisation, including also a copy of a 2 year contract she signed with me.... flatly refused for a work permit because one or two rules were not fully satisfied.

As long as the Thai government are so utterly rigid in these matters they will continue to outlaw a great number of extremely competent people, a great number of very good people, and a whole raft of very positive contributors to Thai society. Instead demanding that rules are met to the letter and not really worrying if people really are what they appear. The outward appearance is the most important factor as it always has been and perhaps always will.

  9. HI -

i am fountain pen fan too - goes well with my nosegay and pince-nez - but you would be horrified at the ghetto no-name ones i enjoy here. i love that i can buy such a pen that is functional and looks ok for about 2 dollars and that it is certainly not so terribly different from the montblanc. sure, craftsmanship, resale blah blah, but the montblanc goes blotchy too...

will have to assault f-town too! there will be a logjam of pen nerds!

    rr

I'm happy with my Lamy - picked it up in Central for 1200 baht w ith a 1.5 italic nib - writes beautifully. Not 2 dollars, but then your Montblanc won't handle calligraphy too well.

  10. As far as Bangkok goes.........is the Nonthaburi Project still running? The agency that deals with this (they advertise on here) state that WP's will be issued even without a degree. Some tie-in with Chulalongkorn University I believe.

My info is, however, over a year old now.

The Nonthaburi project IS still up and running, but it's very misleading also. Make sure you know what you're getting into before you sign up there.

I tested it out a few years back, paid a few thousand to do the intro course, and was posted at an unbelievable school (I mean - I found out where I was to be sent, which is NOT supposed to happen, before they bussed me off to Laos for a visa run.

One look at the school, it turned out to be a Temple school - the temple was clean and rich, the school obviously got virtually no funds - building and desks were at least 50 years old, no doors on classrooms and most students had no books, pencils or socks... so I walked out and found a job earning 30k paid over 12 months in a sweaty government school. Nonthaburi project is very low on the ladder - it's designed to push fresh teachers into schools that nobody else will work in. 75% of teachers are non-native and unqualified - mostly it's a haven for Filipino teachers.

They advertise a 40k salary, but that's nothing like an English definition of salary. It's paid on a daily basis - and they have a lot of downtime which (during the course of a year) they will give you a 10k retainer for the month in summer - but not over the Songkran break (i.e. you finish in February or March depending on the school - you will have at least 2 months, probably 3 months unpaid in summer).

  11. As long as there are suckers out there who fall for these scams, they will continue to operate as it's easy money for the operators, can't believe people are still falling for this type of scamming.

Always remember "If it seems to good to be true, it most likely is"

    HAHAHA

So all it needs is a new type of scamming where it seems like a genuine deal - not too good to be true... means I don't have to sell too cheaply to you right?

Your attitude is typical of scam victims... and to achieve a more successful scam takes real sales ability - that means people who come over as being genuine and sincere.

Consider this - the only reason you haven't been the victim of a scam is because you haven't been targeted yet.

  12. Well, it finished today and it started on the the first try and idled great off the start. Didn't run hot and seemed about the same as before. I have only put it to about 7k rpm so far, when I drove it home (about 30 min). It's seems very smooth, and maybe bit more quiet and "tight-feeling" than before. Tonight I will go for a longer cruise to make sure it seems ok, before me and wife go to Burirum with it tomorrow. Also, here are some pics of it as of 5 minutes ago, also showing the fairing damage that it has. In the one pic I taped up the left carbon intake a bit, so it looks really ugly, but for the most part it still looks great! :D

Oh my... Those high res pics sure aren't flattering... Has the potential buyer actually seen the bike? And if he has he's willing to pay ~135k for it? Sorry Lenny but that is one seriously worn and tattered bike... Buyer ought to get a brand new Ninja 250R or spend just a bit more to get a near-new Kawa Ninja 650R. Your bike, sorry to say, looks like a serious money pit... :ermm: Good luck my man!

    =)) Money pit?

I'll get a carbon sticker for the intake, and do a new Bumblebee paint job maybe next year - there's nothing else to spend (new tyres/chain and sprocktets). It's like new - and runs just like in the video

    - very fast and feels super-stable cranking it over at over 200km/h.

It's like a new bike except for the fairing - but I don't like it anyway, nasty stickers will come off and I'll have a nice clean yellow/black paint job. Tank's almost perfect. The photo's make it look much tattier than it is.

  13. Not all Ed Visas are based on a Thai Language course.

But all are based on a requirement of a minimum attendance. Up to now this does not seem seem to have been forced by the intitutions or immigration which I feel has had impact on the serious students.

I was afraid that what I consider aabuse of the visa would lead to a crackdown which would affect all students.

Some impact, I imagine. Some students are simply slow learners - and I know one student who attended fairly regularly for two years and he speaks a good deal less clearly than someone who lived in Thailand for around 6 months and actually wanted to learn.

In England, people quickly complain about the bloody foreigners that can't be bothered to learn the language. Remember now, there are maybe 100 times more bar hopping desperado's trying to get student visas and survive by holding down some part time work on the side.

If half the farang left tomorrow, it wouldn't have much impact - and if I wasn't one of them, it would certainly make me happier.

  14. The best is to come and sit on a free lesson, see the school, talk to students and staff. Also the method, some students really like to learn Thai using transliteration. Walen is not doing it, if your friend learns at our school she will be encouraged to learn the Thai alphabet and not after several books of study but right from the first day and first lesson.

Student numbers also usually give good indication whether the market things something is good or not. I do not see much participation of Pro in the Thai language forum, never seen them here, apart from having one small banner in the visa forum.

    Walen, www.thaiwalen.com

That said, the method of pronouncing the word, and then spelling it means that you never actually learn how to read the words, you just memorise the words you already learned. For example, the word 'rice' is spelled 'koo aa woo kaaw' and then you add a tone marker 'mai too' and then repronounce with the new tone.

Using Walen, they don't spell like Thai's spell, they just spell the whole word and say it. This is frustrating, as my Thai is quite good, but I cannot read new words correctly. I'd like to learn to read properly.

  15. [quote I will give Microsoft credit for one thing though, their mice are far better than Apple's. So they have that going for them.

Why do you give credit for a 40 year old mouse design to Microsoft? I don't use Microsoft, my mouse is from HP and I don't use Microsoft.

Just give Apple credit for creating a stupid mouse and forcing it's users to use a crippled Operating System that doesn't allow them to change it to function the way they would like - every other operating system will allow support for multi-button mouse, mousewheels, and it wouldn't be too hard to code new libraries to cope with new kinds of hardware. This is just something Apple just don't think you should want.
