  1. "Do you know WHY most Thais wouldn't bother to stop and help regardless of any accidents sometimes? They ARE afraid that things will get turned around and they are the one who will get the blame who caused the accident."

This is the stupidest thing I have ever read on Thai Visa.

I've been told the same thing by Thais I work with: "do not stop or you will be expected to pay".

  2. Why is it always so damned difficult to get any facts?

What is the excise tax here based on? alcohol content? volume? per bottle?

Without this info, it is impossible tell what is a rip off and what is not.

Someone suggested (I suspect incorrectly) that VAT is increased on beer from 7% to 9%. That would be an increase in price of about 1%.

Has any body got any facts at all?

    http://www.pattayadailynews.com/shownews.p...NEWS=0000009160

"excise taxes for beer will rise to Bt60 per litre from Bt55, white liquor to Bt120 per litre from Bt110 and blended liquor to Bt300 a litre from Bt280."

  3. In addition, what kind of "interesting people" could be met there? Who of any interest to anyone (except to homecountry's tax office and not even that in all cases) has settled in Bangkok? Stickman? The "authors" and gogo bar owners he "interviews"?

Joseph Maier, Jack Shirley, Trink :) .

SF got more boring every year I was there. Most of the interesting places in Tendernob have been shut down or converted into Yuppie/Guido haunts.

  4. I did not see any mention about age gaps in Absingjul post....

Similar age 28/25. Both conservatively dressed, no touching/hand holding.

Learned to brush off these comments long ago.

  5. Hey Penkoprod....$700 RT is a great price...did you fly to the East Coast? My travel agent just quoted me 45K baht for RT to East Coast via EVA. Can you PM me your travel agent's contact details ?? I need 3 tickets. Thx.

You should check all of the consolidator sites. I flew RT JFK-BKK(via NRT) with JAL earlier this year for US$760.

  6. Have to send in a status report.....basically you are alive report....every year. If you don't they stop your payments and it can take months before you are getting regular payments again.....

    Beachbunny

Do they have any method to actually authenticate who is filling out this report? Could a Thai wife continue submitting these after her American husband is run over by a buffalo?

  7. For the most accurate assessment I would read writings from the era. A few people tend to have selective memories :)

Nation Review was around then (seen these on microfiche 10+ years ago), and Dean Barrett wrote a book or two around that time.

  8. I was thinking about working in BKK too, but I don't know. I am a young IT guy (.NET/SAP ABAP Programming mostly...have prof experience...maybe someone has something? :-) pm me). I was looking at jobs.thaivisa a bit but seems sparse so I don't think I have a realistic chance? Maybe there are better sites? I don't know. I could use the money but don't absolutely need it.

If you expect a western salary your best bet is to go through the company's main job portal. Plenty of tech firms are in BKK: IBM, EDS, HP, GE, etc. If they are offering a local salary they will usually mention Thai fluency as a qualification.

Just be aware that most companies will try to avoid hiring young western males who have not lived in the region very long. The turnover is just too high due to various... distractions :)
