  1. This was area C, taken from the department hall looking down at arrivals.

Chaos, backed up all the way to the door...

Try arriving at Jeddah when all the hajjis are flying in - then you can complain about chaos. It took me over 9 hours from entering the arrivals lounge to getting out (Ramadan '89)

C'mon man, don't compare a defunct airport 17 years ago to Soowannapoom now. And get your facts right, Hajj is 3 months after Ramadan... Having said that, I have spent my 4 hours in the immigration queue in Jeddah too.

And IMO the new BKK airport just sucks big time, it's just not finished... I've changed my routes to fly to Phuket instead.

  2. Great idea!!! And while we're at it, lets leave a urine sample, a sperm sample (for us guys, just in case we are "possible" sex offenders), and for a good measure let them take a retintal scan too. And let them count our genomes too and include in the database. Seriously people, would you trust any governement on this planet with that much information about yourself? And please don't give me this BS line about "global terrorism" etc...

George Orwell was right, just 20 years off...

I can imagine myself going through the immigration somewhere in the US (where all this information will end up, no doubt?) in 2015?...

Imm officer: Ah sir, I see that you were in Thailand just a week before the coup in 2010...

    Me: huh???

Imm officer: yes, and in Burma just week prior to that...

Me: well, I was on holidays....

Imm officer: and I see that you've been working in the Middle East for a long time... your features look a bit Arab to me...

Me: huh!!!! but my mother is Swedish...

Imm officer: no matter, Sir, I just got it confirmed that your finger prints match an armed bank robery in KC 2 weeks ago... please step through here...

Me: but I was the other side of the planet then...

Imm officer: you can explain it to the judge, Sir.. just keep your hands where I can see them and follow the man with the gun...

So where is that hydrocloric acid to wash my hands with...

  3. Some good links there. I will be interested in your findings.

The qustion is how safe is navigating the city with the laptop in your car. A handheld GPS can always be mounted in your field of vision, but even the smaller laptops can't be securely mounted. Perhaps one of those pricey tiny Sony VAIO's would do the job... one of those with the Bluetooth GPS receiver would be perfect.

  4. Is the map software available separately? I have a Garmin GPSmap 76 CS. It uses the same map data as 2610. I wouldn't really want to buy another unit, just to get the Thai map.

Interesting info on elevated highways. Didn't think about it, but the GPS sure would get confused. :o

That was my nick-name in middle school, but I though it was spelled with a "C". As for the mapping software for Thailand and Garmin - I was told by Garmin Asia to contact a Bangkok company ESRI about the mapping data for Thailand. Garmin has a product(actually a group of products) called MapSource that is available for the US, Europe, Australia, etc. but the detailed map data is not available for Thailand/Asia and other places. For all of these places they have a product called WorldMap which is not very detailed.

I am not familiar with your product, GPSmap 76 CS. I have an eTrex handheld and want to hook it up to my laptop to do realtracking in Thailand in my car and asked ESRI

    ESRI homepage

about a mapping software product with detailed Thai data. The salesperson I talked to told me that they are currently in the final stages of testing a Mapsource software product for Thailand and it should be ready for release in about 2 months.

Hope that puts you on the right track. I'm probably going to give it a shot when it comes out in August(you never know - software releases are often late.

Good Luck. Check out Garmins site - you can get alot of info on their Mapsource products and there is a Mapsource brochure in pdf format that you can download.

That's really cool, phormio. A brother in arms... despite the "C" spelling :D ( please don't ask how I got it and why it's with "K" ) .. and you are class of 19??

76 CS is a great unit. I can use it on the boat for off shore diving, in the car for shore diving, and it's a handheld too... great for those geo cache treks...

Thanks for the link to the ESRI site, I'll check them out. I can wait a few months, no probs. My main objective is to be able to navigate myself out of BKK.

Bought this Bangkok map from Thinknet thinking I could somehow interface it with the GPS, but no such luck. It's still the best map of Bangkok I've seen though, and it will give you proper GPS coordinates, so you can always navigate to Cheap Charlies on soi 11 no matter where you are... Very detailed, and having a zoomable softcopy on your PC make locating things easy.

  5. The house plans I've seen in the books at the Tambon office are pretty similar, if not the same as some plans on this site but generally 30% cheaper.

Your basic 2 bedroom house was priced at 500.000 baht. Don't know what standard that was though. It went up to 3-4 million for the larger houses. It was a mixed bag really, some of the smaller ones didn't have a kitchen, while some of the midrange 3 bedrooms were quite attractive designs. The price there was something like 2 million, but this will obviously vary depending on materials you choose.

I think this is all sponsored by Mr. T and his party. His picture was all over the plan books.

  6. Your wife can put you on the book but it's hers 100% and will not help you if the bottoms falls out. Know of only 1 farang who did this. Don't see any advantages for doing it.

Surely, having your name on Tabien Baan can help in many instances. As mentioned before, if you want to apply for Thai driving license or any other dealing with Thai authorities. They seem to require a copy of Tabien Baan from Thais for just about everything.

My wife is definitely pushing to get my name on the Tabien Baan for our house. She says it will make me more Thai... and I don't even live there most of the year.

  7. Some nice houses guys. But tell me, how do you structure the ownership of the property? I have been avoiding buying property in Thailand because of all the ownership restrictions for foreigners, but now Khun Wife is digging in the nails so will not be able to avoid it for much longer.

So what do you do to avoid problems? Let the wife buy land and lease it from her? Set up a company to hold the property? Or do you just trust your wife and let her own everything in her name?

Had a bad experience couple of years ago. A good friend of mine, married to a Thai lady, lost everything. They bought something like 25 rai of prime land somewhere around Pitsanulok, buid a nice house, all in wife's name of couse. Decided to move permanently to Thailand, wife moves first to start up their future business, and my friend is to follow in less than a year, once his work contract finishes. Three months down the road, his wife has a tragic accident. Day after cremation he goes to their house to find his wife's cusin sitting there with a policeman. He's being told to packs his bags and get the F... out of the house in one hour. The family never cared for his wife before, but now they divide all the land and are laughing all the way to the bank...

So how do you protect yourself from situations like this?

I thought this question worthy of its own topic, therefore I have moved the post into a new topic.

  8. Bates,

According to the information from the residents on Koh Lanta, the island has suffered only minor damage. Most of the structures and resorts are undamaged. The infrastructure, elctricity, phones, etc, are all functioning. There are no deaths reported, no persons missing, and only minor injuries..

This website is in Swedish, but at least you can check out the pictures of the wave and the resulting damage.

As one resident put it: " The island is open for turism.."

Don't cancel your trip there, you'll be OK on Koh Lanta.

Don't have any information on Ao Nang though...

  9. Does anybody know what is the extent of the damage north of Phuket, notably Takua Pa area. I have friends running businesses there and have not been able to reach anybody. Everybody talks about Phuket but there's not much news about outlying areas. Also, what is the situation on Koh Lanta. Appreciate if anybody can give more info..

  10. From the Globe and Mail:

On Phi Phi island — where "The Beach" starring Leonardo DiCaprio was filmed — 200 bungalows at two resorts were swept out to sea.

    http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/sto.../International/

C'mon IGW, "The Beach" wasn't filmed on Koh Phi Phi Don where all the resorts are... It was filmed on Koh Phi Phi Leh, on Maya Beach. Before filming there was nothing there, now there's a lot of garbage...

  11. The reason your PS doesn't work is because the PAL system used in UK (PAL-I) is sligtly different from the one used in Thailand (PAL-B ), and the rest of Europe and World for that matter.

The difference is in separation between picture and sound (6Mhz for PAL-I, and 5.5 Mhz for PAL-B ). That's why you'll get the picture but no sound, your TV just can't tune in. To fix that you would have an electronics handyman tweak or change the VHF modulator in your PS. However, direct Video and Audio connection should still work if you TV supports that.
