Ok so you told us how amazing you are but what has that to do with the millions dying globally due to the countless number of associated diseases and their complications due to smoking?

You have to realise that those 'millions dying globally' from smoking are just theoretical numbers that are spat out of a computer model. They bear little relationship to reality. The computer model, called SAMMEC was designed by the anti-smoking industry (for industry it is, with huge amounts of money involved), and then the model is fed with data by that same anti-smoking industry (do I detect the potential for bias there?). Garbage In, Garbage Out (GIGO) as they say in computing. It takes no account of age (if you were a smoker and died at 95, you are another number added to the 'smoking related deaths' toll), nor any confounding factors, i.e. if you have a family history of heart disease, and you are a smoker who dies of a heart attack, it's classed as 'smoking related', whether smoking had anything to do with it or not. The numbers of 'smoking related' deaths are massively (and I do mean massively) exaggerated, and deliberately so. They've widened the net by attributing just about every disease known to man to smoking. They haven't got to ingrown toenails yet, but I'm sure they're working on it. We are also told that countless thousands die from exposure to 'second-hand' smoke, but there aren't actually any dead bodies. Use the power of the internet and try to find one, just ONE case in the world where a death has been shown to have been caused by exposure to 'second-hand' smoke. You will find nothing. Nada. Because it hasn't actually killed anyone, except in the fevered imaginations of the rabid anti-smoking lobby.

The anti-smoking industry is built on lies and deceit, and nothing they say can be trusted. You just have to look at their press releases screaming about the dangers of smoking; full of weasel words like 'could', 'may', 'might', 'it is thought', 'research suggests', 'is associated with', 'studies indicate' etc etc. Even the phrase 'smoking related disease' is designed to be a catch-all to boost the numbers. Far more non-smokers die of 'smoking-related disease' than smokers do, but you'll never read about that. And all those press releases invariably conclude with 'more research is needed', which is anti-smokerspeak for 'we want more funding so we can keep this gravy train rolling'.

I have seen so many examples of egregious interpretation of research emanating from the anti-tobacco industry that I don't believe anything they say any more. They twist and distort everything to support their agenda. Their credo is 'the ends justify the means'. And the anti-alcohol lobby is currently adopting and adapting the anti-smoking template for its own use, so successful has the misleading propaganda been. Expect disgusting pictures of diseased livers etc to appear on your beer bottles in the not too distant future. Welcome to the new age of puritanism, where the self-appointed 'experts' decide what is good for you.

Did you happen to read beyond the Title? Like maybe the very next line?? " Dozens of local officials in five provinces are hunting a wandering wild male elephant that has killed four people, in order to chase it back into the forest."

    Oops! :)

Dunno how I managed it, but I missed that first line. Ho hum. I must be getting old and senile...

  4. I had a massive problem with pigeons in the house I bought here in Greece, because the old lady opposite (single floor house, flat roof) used to put bread out on the roof every day. My balcony used to get covered (I mean really covered - there were hundreds of them) in pigeon guano on a daily basis because they would roost on the edge of my roof so they could keep an eye on the flat roof opposite. I bought some of those clear plastic spikes and stuck a couple of rows along the edge of the roof overlooking the street, and a row along the ridge tiles. Problem solved. They didn't like sitting half way up the roof, so moved to the house next door. The clear plastic spikes aren't too obvious, either.

From a previous discussion here of this product:

Thanks for that link. It rather makes one wonder exactly what is in the stuff. As I said in my original post, the hot flushes begin almost instantaneously after drinking the stuff, so whatever it's made with is obviously pretty strong. It would be interesting to know what the doctors had to say about Seabear's son (stepson?) who was taken to hospital after drinking it.

  6. A few weeks ago, my wife received an order of something called 'UME GOLD', which she'd ordered from Thailand (we live in Europe), which is a Korean 'detox' type thing, supposedly all natural, made from fruits and herbs I think. It was quite expensive (I believe she paid 4000 Baht for 40 sachets), but I've been a bit under the weather the past few months, so she thought it would help me. You mix it in a small glass of water and drink it. It's quite pleasant tasting, but within minutes of drinking it, I would feel a hot flush all over my body, which lasted 15 minutes or so.

    So far, so good.

I'd been drinking one of these sachets every day for about a week, and I went for a pee mid-morning and my piss was blood red. I mean really red, not just pink tinged. It looked like pure blood, it was that dark. It freaked me out, I can tell you. And it started really suddenly. I'd been for a pee earlier that morning, and it was a normal slightly yellowish clear colour. I had a look on the internet, and found out that urine can get blood in it for various reasons, and that very often it will sort itself out, which was something of a relief, as it was over the Christmas period when everything was closed and everyone was on holiday. I wracked my brains trying to think what might have caused it, and the only thing I could think of that had changed recently was my taking this Ume Gold, so I stopped taking it. I continued to piss blood for the next three days, and then it stopped as suddenly as it had started. Went for a pee at lunchtime, it was blood red. Went again a few hours later, and it was clean and clear, not even a trace of pink. I would add that I had no pain or discomfort, just blood-red piss.

The reason I'm posting this is because I have no idea whether it was anything to do with this stuff I was drinking or not, and since my wife ordered it from Thailand, I was wondering if anyone else had used it, and if so, whether they had had any similar problems. It's most peculiar - I've never had anything like that happen before, although at 68, I am starting to experience things that didn't happen in my younger days, which is inevitable as we age, I guess. But I'd love to know if this detox drink was the cause of my piss turning red. I'm kind of reluctant to start drinking it again just to see if the same thing happens, as it was really quite worrying.

Anyone have any experience of 'UME GOLD'?

  7. If the aircon unit isn't cleaned thoroughly on a regular basis, black mould can form in areas where condensation collects. When this dries out, and the unit is turned on, it can blow the dust from the mould into the room, which can cause health problems.

My wife and I stayed in a hotel in Bangkok last year, and when we turned on the aircon, there was a musty smell filled the room. I turned it off and told reception it needed cleaning asap. To their credit, they had a guy come in the same day to strip it down and clean it. I believe that outbreaks of Legionnaires Disease have been linked to dirty aircon systems.

I didn't check your link, but I'm assuming you're fine to bring in 250g. (It's the amount I always take in with me.) In which case, do not buy it in UK - the tax makes it horrendously expensive. Buy it in duty free Dubai, and you'll pay a fraction of the UK price. Golden Virginia is actually available in Thailand. The touristy bits of Sukhumvit, most 7/11 stores sell it - I think I paid a bit over 400 Baht last March, but I can't remember if it was for 30g or 50g.

I am sure Tesco Lotus and Big C sell them.

The problem I've found with the ones sold by Tesco and Big C are that they tend to be 'above the knee' shorts, and my preference is for 'below the knee' (a few inches longer than the ones pictured in the OP), which for some reason seem to be hard to find in Thailand. The other thing that I don't understand about that style of shorts sold in Thailand is that they are invariably made from very heavy (and thus hot) material. Lightweight fabric shorts are very hard to find. And I always keep an eye open wherever I am for the type of shorts I like, but with little success so far.

none of the container carrying trucks lock them down, too much lost time if they do, easier to just let them fall off the backs and put people lives at risk. Speed and corners are the reason they fall off, the driver should face charges as should the company responsible, enforcing of laws would not go astray either, all containers need to be locked down

It only takes moments to lock down a container on a skeleton trailer - just about as long as it takes to walk around the truck. I used to do a lot of container work in Melbourne in the early '70s, so I'm familiar with what's involved. There's no excuse for not locking it down.

The driver of the car was incredibly lucky to escape. The Gods must have been smiling on him that day...

Having said that, I knew a guy once who had put a Chevy V8 in a Morris Minor, with nitro boost and all the rest of it. Street legal, too. He'd had to shift the driving seat back to the back seats to accommodate the engine, which filled the front of the car as well as the engine bay.

I went to boarding school. One of my mates that slept in our dorm sang higher than normal. I wasn't threatened. Just because you are gay doesn't classify you as a deviate. In any event if you are approached by a gay person that proposition' you what would you say. I would be flattered and say no. You still have a choice.

No, I wasn't referring to that. Normal gay guys (or girls) are not a problem to accommodate - you basically just leave the students to sort it out between them. The vast majority of gay people are neither predatory nor threatening. I was thinking more in terms of the more recent phenomenon of trans people who 'identify' as another sex, and demand to use the facilities of the opposite gender.

What do you do with a trans guy who doesn't want to sleep in the men's dorm because he 'identifies' as a woman? Or vice versa?

It is, as I say, a can of worms for an educational facility which provides accommodation, and I can understand them not wanting to get embroiled in identity politics. Thailand of all places has a very relaxed attitude to the gay and trans scene, and I don't really think the people in charge of this school are likely to have any prejudice where the sexuality of their students is concerned. But they have an eye on the workability of the situation, and of the complications likely to arise from admitting trans people. I think their stance is most likely based on the practicalities of dealing with the situation.

That was the problem, they didn't really have a handle on it but it exceeded 5%!

I find modern Chang Classic a bit bland... but of course the price is good!

I remember reading years ago that someone tested various bottles of Singha and found that the ABV varied between 5% and 9% (not sure if those figures are correct, but it was somewhere around there) depending on the batch. How much truth there is in that I have no idea, but it wouldn't surprise me. They don't seem to be big on QC in Thailand.

So you don't have good morals if you are queer/fagot/homosexual/gay any way u know what I mean. The school does not appear to want the matter resolved.

May be better to give new dilemma for school: the support for same sex marriage in the country.

I think there's probably a lot more to this than meets the eye. As a boarding school, if they open the doors to gay / trans people, they then have to deal with the dilemma of who sleeps in which dorm, who uses which bathrooms, etc etc. It basically opens a can of worms that they can do without. If it was a day school, then I'd agree that it counts as unfair discrimination, but as a boarding school, I can sympathise with them wanting to avoid the complexities and expense of having to accommodate a small minority with varying demands.

    Nicotine vs. nicotinic acid (niacin).

"Can nicotine be turned into niacin? There are those who declare there is no relationship between the two, that it is a mere accident of nomenclature. Well, let’s see..."

"Take the five-atom ring off nicotine by breaking just one bond and replace it with a COOH group and you’re there. In biochemical terms, this is known as ‘a piece of piss’.
The two molecules are not unrelated. A simple oxidation reaction is all you need to turn nicotine into nicotinic acid. It’s not an accident of nomenclature at all.

Much as the Righteous would like to have us believe."

Nicotine has been ingested for a long time.  Although it can raise blood pressure, it is not the chemical that is responsible for most cancers.  The conclusion is that nicotine in the doses experienced by smokers is not carcinogenic.

Not only that, but nicotine is present in vegetables of the nightshade group - tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes etc. In fact, nicotinic acid is an essential part of our diet - without it, we suffer from pellagra - and is used as an additive in many foods. They renamed it because they thought 'nicotinic acid' had negative connotations, so we now know it as 'Niacin'.
