  1. It is a great site. I remember when I first discovered the site when I had a visa problem. I went to Lonely Planet and someone there rec'd it to me. Back then there were less than 8000 members and now pushing 40K in just over 2.5 years. Man how time drags, j/k. Good work and I have one favor to ask of a mod, can you unrestrict my acct? I really want to get back to posting again. thx in advance

You asked nicely Bobby. Welcome back.

Thank you very much Good Dr. You are the 1st person I remember from the forum (followed by George and Huski) way back then. You are a top guy and this is and has been a top forum, the top forum in my book.

  2. 27 baht per minute?  that can't be right.

in the states, you can make a phone call from a pay phone for 50 cents.  but you can talk forever for that.

    it must be a mistake.

I can't believe a hotel like novatel siam would do that.

a phone call from a land line in bangkok costs 3 baht.  and for that 3 baht, you can talk forever.

yeah.  I would talk to the hotel manager about this.

every business graduate knows that return customers are the name of the game.  enticing people to come to the hotel once, and then, blowing them away is so shortsighted.

I'm sure that the hotel would not want to give this image to prospective customers.  they stand to lose a lot of business if this is the way they are treating people.

being the curious type of guy, I will go to the hotel and ask them face-to-face how much it costs for a phone call if I stay at their hotel.

27 baht a minute for a local call?  nah.  you must be exaggerating.

Yes, I would do that also; talking to the mgr that is. 1st though I would practice on a wall cause that's what talking to the mgr will be like

  3. I always love the comparisons to third world up country folk. I don't give a rat's ass what is the average peasant wage. Why don't we base all of our spending habits on the average cuban wage of $13. Better yet, a starbucks cup of coffee per day costs more than the average wage of most 3rd world countries. All these mothers who move here and cheapen themselves into oblivion are putrid. I can't much deal with it.

  4. Turok has been branded a troll for expressing his opinion here on this forum regarding marriage. He has an strong opinion on this matter and is sharing it here. The man's entitled to do that. You just don't agree with him as he has touched a sensitive nerve or something. I'd say that he has a valid point to an extent. I've heard some pretty lame reasons for getting married while reading this forum the past year such as making visa requirements easier. It would appear to me that many MFers here run out and get married without thinking it through. This reminds me to start the failed marriage thread

  5. My girlfriend and me are living on an average of 100k/month in the middle of Sukhumvit in Bangkok, in a 'Suites' apartment complex with swimming pool, spa, fitness, etc. The apartment costs me (including electricity, water, etc) approximately 50k/month and the other 50k go into food, shopping, going out, cinema, etc. Couldn't complain. I could spend more, but the rest goes into the piggy bank :o

If you live somewhere not in the city center and can hold back on some expensive imported farang products, you can likely get through with 50k/month easily.

I'm waiting for the 10-20k/ month poverty packers with their pipe dreams to emerge. they are overdue. hope no one takes them seriously

  6. Sitting down with friends..................................wot friends

    Feeling lonely still lampard10? :o

Favourite 10 beers I can buy in Thailand?

    1. Crown Larger (Australia)

    2. Kilkenny (Ireland)

    3. Guinness (Ireland)

    4. Red Horse (Thailand)

    5. Chang (Thailand)

    6. VB (Australia)

    7. Heinekin (Thailand)

    8. Asahi (Japan)

    9. Blue Ice (Thailand)

    10. Tetleys (England)

The Asahi in Thailand is brewed here and thus is nasty stuff as all beers brewed in this country. it must be the water or something. Too bad the had to brew Tiger here. That was the best bet for a decent cheap import before. Thai brewed beers have too much formaldehydes as they induce vicious pounding headaches and no doubt brain cancer. From the above list, I liked VB the best but naturally my 2 local stores that carried the product here in Sukhumvit have recently discontinued it. Thailand is no country for a beer lover

  7. 1. Samuel Smith (any style)

    2. McEwan's Scotch Ale (9.0% alcohol)

    3. Anchor Porter or Liberty Ale

    4. Any Anhueser Busch Product (eat me naysayers)

    5. Tooth Sheaf Stout

    6. Guinness

    7. McAndrew's Scotch Ale

    8. VB

    9. Sam Adams Seasonal Ale

    10. Sierra Nevada (I guess)

Just say no to the following piss waters

    1. Thai Beer

    2. German Beer

    3. Dutch and Danish Beers

    4. Miller Products

    5. Heileman Products

For those of us that live in Thailand, don't know why we're talking about the ten best beers cause we sure can't get em here but we have easy access to the ten worst. LOL

  8. A bit harsh there Hans Brix. I quite enjoy a quiet Beer Chang on occasion. I think Beer Chang is the best of the lot. I find the Singha quality can vary from batch to batch. Quality control issues there. I suppose that why they are losing market share to Chang.

I will be interested to see hoe this new Ice Blue goes. I take it that it is a product of the SanMig group?

I must agree with you that Chang is the best but I don't feel like that is saying too much. Singa is really unstomachable (unstomachable?). Too bad they started brewing the Tiger here as they have ruined that ok beer

  9. Was at Jam session records cwp today and saw a lot of great stuff you cant find anywhere around. eg. 1st 3 seasons All in the Family for starters

It's not a bad selection but quite expensive.I appreciate there's a need to make a margin but my guess Jam is a little greedy.I'm back in UK three times a year so stock up then.

Great point. Prices there were outrageous. It's nice to see rare stuff but come on. Those All in Family sets were 3100 baht. You can buy same on Amazon for 900 baht. So even with Amazon overseas shipping, you still save over 1500 baht. But they look to be doing a brisk biz cause people frenzy for this stuff and pay any price

  10. I'm with Poolcleaner on this one.

I fail to see how living like a tramp affords one a greater insight into a culture.

In my experience all of these 'get by on 5$ a day' types are all rich brats who have never really known what it is to struggle.

They seem to think it would be jolly fun to try being poor in the third world in order to achieve 'oneness' with the locals while learning all about their culture at the same time. Silly misguided fools!

For £3.50 a day you can afford a large room with bathroom, electricity and water paid, food for a month AND that's covered after two-and-a-half weeks. The money for the other week-and-a-half is all yours. True this as I shacked up with a couple of girls in Chiang Mai and they showed me the monthly bill from the landlord and we bought the food from the local market. How's that living like a tramp?

    You've struggled I assume?

You could only know they're ''Silly misguided fools!" if you've tried it for yourself. I'm back in the UK ATM. You've been over there in LoS I assume. How was Nana?

Wow, you're my hero dude. Did you hitch rides to get here? I hope you didn't fly for that would blow the thing out of proportion expensewise. Why bother with electric and water? You could get costs down to a pound a day or less! Rock on. What was that comment about nana? That is my neighborhood of residence. Thanks for mentioning it.

  11. Had I known that posting my 'bear attack experience' whilst recently backpacking in the US was going to be the cause of so much emnity between certain members of this board, I would never have done it. I am truly ashamed & sorry.

I have yet to summon the courage to inform Pastor Hubble that his bible was violated by that large hairy bear. How best can I break the news to him? He is 86 years old & in ill-health, I'm fearful that the shock could kill him.

Joe, I don't think any of these dudes have been to the Great Smoky Mtns. I have and know that bears are everywhere day and night
