1. Had to laugh when i saw this post.

I am always saying to my GF "f*ing asia plastic"

Why is the plastic wrapping also so thick? i am sure in the event of a nuclear war you would get some protection by putting your head inside a giant Lays packet.

I also STILL cannot open those little plastic bags of chilli sauce which are closed using an elastic band wrapped around the top a million times. I end up using a fork and destroying everything

  2. My 10 year British passport expires in June 2007.

My current work permit (1 year stamped extension in my passport type) expires in April 2006. As i am staying at the same school for another year, i will get another 1 year stamped extension in my passport (same as i did last year)

So that would be from April 2006 to April 2007 - which is only 2 months before my passport expires...........................................

Anyone know if they will indeed stamp me for another year?

If they wont, then i have to renew my passport before April 2006...........which means that my 10 year passport only lasted 8 years and 10 months.

Also i live in Phuket and i believe i have to go to the passport office in Bangkok in person to do this. That is a drag as i am a school teacher and dont get that much time off.............

    Any advice please?

  3. I'ts illegal to consume them in their countries of origin, so why should we have to "GET REAL" (a dreadful americanism) and allow the Thais to import them for food?

You surely dont think they are REALLY going to serve real tiger and lion meat.

    :o

It would be financially and logistically impossible to do that.

I enjoyed the previous post about the zoo not serving animals as food on the premises - so i guess that would mean that the restaurants would all be vegetarian then?!! Or dont fish, crab, shrimp, chicken and pork count as animals.

I say if you are prepared to eat meat then you should be prepared to eat ALL meat and not just the stuff you didnt pet at the zoo when you were a kid.

If it has a face on it - dont eat it. ,

  4. <snip> original long post deleted. RDN

I think I will spend my holiday elsewhere.

I cannot support any country where this type of archaic, ignorant,

    destructive behaviour is condoned.

The fact that there are no animals left in the jungles is bad enough.

I am ashamed of Thailand and surprised by even the fact that

someone thought it was a good idea.

Horrible press will follow, protests will come, this is just bad.

Lets hope you go back to Canada soon then. Whilst you are there, please visit an abatoir or a slaughter house. Then report back on the conditions you see there whilst eating a hot dog. Or in fact, go to a hot dog factory and see what <deleted> you are eating. We look forwards to hearing from you again once you are in the land of milk and honey, (and slaughterhouses)

  5. Chiang Mai....will soon be known worldwide as the land of barbarism.

I think that Toxin had better get the wheels in motion and arrange to back down from these ideas by calling them a misunderstanding....and that infact there will be no animals eaten on the Zoo premises.....but a small restaurant just outside the zoo will serve........

Ok, lets take stock here. (Vegetable of course).

    1. How about we take an animals baby, then when its about 8 weeks old, kill it and serve it. We call that LAMB in the west.

    2. What about taking another animals baby, packing it into a crate, feeding it sweet things and then ending its miserable life by killing it and eating it. We call that VEAL in the west.

    3. Fois Gras anyone? Yup, forcefeed a duck til its liver expands, then kill it and eat it.

    4. Oxtail soup anyone?

    5. Ever eaten tongue? Used to be very popular in England on a sandwich with a bit of mustard. It is indeed the actual tongue of a dead animal.

    6. Horse meat ? France, Germany and Italy is your next holiday destination then.

    7. Pigs trotters? Tripe anyone? Pigeon pie ?

The list goes on and on

There are a multitude of meats which we eat but because we come to Thailand and there is different stuff on the menu we think its disgusting. GET REAL !

Have a look at what your own country serves up before coming as a guest to someone elses and complaining. Most of this <deleted> comes from us thinking some animals are cute pettable pets. Other countries see them as food.

  6. I always speak Tinglish when texting on mobiles. And often when speaking. I have no idea why. (We are having a raining here. You wanna coming to my house for eating? etc etc)

    Have a look at www.engrish.com

    its effin hilarious.

  7. If you fly cheap airlines, that's what to expect.

As a retired airline pilot I'll stick to Thai Aw. for safety reasons, better safe than sorry. :D

:o mmmm interesting and more than a little scary. I just assumed that aircraft and pilots etc would be subjected to the same rules regarding servicing of the aircraft and training of the staff...............I never gave it a 2nd thought.

I have flown air asia 4 times. First 3, very impressive. Last one - got to the airport 2 hours early only to be told that the flight had been CANCELLED and the next one was in 7 hours. No reason given. They gave me a Mcdonalds voucher for food. I m a f**king veggie so that was no comfort. I think the flight was cancelled because there werent enough people on it. The flight i did get, 7 hours later, wasnt even full. I also nearly missed my connecting flight in KL. I will think twice before using them again.

  8. I for one am not concerned about them hiting Bangkok but PHUKET. Its a short 5 hour drive with no security at all excpet a little at the Sarasin bridge.

What with the goverments terribale job after the Tsunami and the very poor efforts at helping those that need it the guys down south are sure to hit here to gain international awareness.

Its only a matter of time before you see the same reports but replace Bali with Soi Bangla, Patong.

I live in Phuket. I am also going to Bali on Monday. I am not changing my travel plans. I lived my whole life in England under the spectre of the IRA. I was in Manchester when they cowardly bombed that. I lived in Germany when they detonated bombs there. (Yes they did). I was in Karon Beach when the Tsunami hit. My girlfriend was in Madrid, Spain when the Basques bombed that. There are bombs going off all over the place, all the time. Look how many people die in Kashmir for example. A lot of the outcry comes from Americans and Austrailains who arent used to having bombs on their own turf. (Except 7/11 and Oklahoma i guess)

As a previous poster said, you have to thing about the locals and their economy. After the tsunami, hoardes of tourists left Phuket and the economy died. The media were mostly responsible for this. Of course there was damage, but soi bangla was up and running after a couple of days.

I am not changing my lifestyle or travel plans for a couple of mad muslims. A bomb could happen anywhere. F@@k them!

  9. Not strictly a "visa" question - that has been answered elsewhere. Thanks.

I wonder if anyone on the board has any experience of travelling overland from bangkok to angor wat. The air fare seems to be about 8000 baht return. To cut down on expenses i was considering flying to Bangkok and then getting the train to Poipet, then get a mini van or a pick up truck to Siam Reap.

Does anyone have experience of this, as my lonely planet says:- A. The train is 3rd class only and is crowded and slow. and B. The road from Poipet to Siam Reap is a pot holed nightmare which can take between 8 and 24 hours to traverse.

    Any help is much appreciated.

  10. Thanks for the information.

    http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations...ation/index.jsp

I was actually looking for both of us going to Cambodia. That website says we both need to pay 20 US dollars. Can that be right? (I am UK passport holder and she is a Thai passport holder)

(However, visa can be obtained on arrival, if coming for:

    - touristic purposes for a stay of max. 1 month.

Fee: USD 20,- and one passport photo;)

A Thai citizen on a normal Thai passport has to pay 20 dollars to get into Cambodia - i dunno, it just doesnt seem correct to me somehow. particularly when a Cambodian travelling into Thailand doesnt have to pay,

Entry may be refused if of "hippy" appearance.

For more information see: For details, click here .

Can anyone throw any light on if my Thai g/f has to pay the 20 dollars?

  11. Yeah couldnt agree more. I went on the day it opened as it was free. It killed exactly half an hour. I was interested to see what they had been doing for the 2 years it had been closed. It s nice and clean and i guess they have done their best, which might be fine for Thai residents. Its a bit small really. Plus i believe they do the illegal and outrageous double pricing for farangs/thais.

I also would prefer to see the fish be released. I managed to block a trip my school planned to the zoo and the aquarium.

  12. I dont understand this post. Are you talking about transvestites?

Anyway, if there is a party then please post the details.

I know a good DJ who will work for free and has all his own decks and stuff

  13. I am only saying that.. that is what is stated on the website. I quoted the source. It ain't my own experience. Everyone knows we cannot easily go to Europe. Again, use it to get some idea and check the Embassies if it's all correct. Simple.

I believe u. For me - doesn't metter, but for Thai people it can be interesting :o As I wrote, Hungary is EU member (but without Shengen rules yet).

I was searching for which country my Thai G/F could visit on her passport but without a visa. (I am still unsure if we can go to Cambodia next month or not just by arriving at the airport)

Anyway, i found the above quote. It suddenly made me wonder this. If i wanted to go on a Grand Tour of Europe, would my Thai G/f need separate visa's for each country? Lets say i flew to Hungary without a visa for her (I am a UK passport holder so no problems for me), then we take the train/bus and generally travel overland and cross a number of borders where, i believe, in the EU you are unlikely to get asked for your passport. Then we take the extremely busy ferry from Calais to Dover, where, presumably we would also be unlucky to get asked for our passport. We could then have a nice trundle round England without all the hassle of going to Bangkok for an interview.

We live in the south of Thailand. I work as a teacher. Do you know how inconvenient it is for us to get to Bangkok to attend a meeting during business hours!

    anyone got any thoughts.

  14. Yes, about 9.45 ish. A prayer to those who are far more unfortunate than me.

I had just left Karon when my girlfriend rang, "have big problem in salon, (she is a hairdresser) have car and motorbike in salon" Raced back to find that indeed her English was correct. The whole area is carnage

I fought to get back. Many many Thais were escaping to higher ground - and killing themselves in the proces by driving like mad. I saw a couple of deaths due to bike smashes.

Some of my friends in Karon have lost everything - even their shoes which were outside.

I cannot tell you how sad i feel for them.

Will (can?) Thaksin declare it a national emergency and help them out a little bit financially i wonder? Lets hope so.

  15. I am still confused about the types of entries. I am working and have a Type B visa and a work permit. Its single entry. I want to nip out of Thailand during the school break. I think i need to get a re-entry stamp at the airport for about 1000 Baht ? That should make no difference to my work permit/visa status right ?

My confusion arrises from a colleague. He is British (same as me) but has a multiple entry Type B (His work permit has not come through yet) He told me he HAS to leave the country every 90 days.

So my question is, what is the point of the multiple entry ? Its inconvenient for us in Phuket to leave the country every 90 days. I have a single entry and understand i have to report my address only every 90 days but not leave the country. Am i confused ? Am i correct about being ABLE to nip out of LOS with a re-entry permit ?

  16. Hi, i am shortly going to be teaching in Phuket on a 12 month contract. I am looking for a some long term accomodation, preferably near to Phuket Town (as that is where i will be working) though i m not too bothered about travelling up to 30 mins. I need more than just a room as i will be living there for 12 months, so i need a bedroom and a living room plus a kitchen with fridge and gas rings. Air con isnt a requirement really and neither is close proximity to girlie bars or discos. I have had a look in the Phuket Gazette but have found it wanting.....

Can anyone give me any help/tips or leads. I reckon i can afford up to 10,000 a month at a pinch but would prefer something in the 6 or 7000 a month bracket.

    Thanks
