So if I happen to take a video of the taxi drivers (who treat our street like a public toilet) and post it on social media will the police come and arrest them? Somehow I doubt it.

Its Groundhog Day again. The military have always been in control despite some other outward and un-mentionable appearances. Old wine, new bottles.

Just returned to Thailand with Thai. Very grumpy and begrudging cabin service. Old, clunky 747 with broken seats and faulty entertainment system. Lots of passengers were unhappy. The staff attitude......who cares. Job for life. No accountability.

Me too. Driving here is very stressful, requires nerves of steel and total concentration. I find a 3 hour drive Bangkok to Hua Hin is mentally exhausting. I've started taking the train. Slow but relaxing.

I love the way Thai taxi drivers are socialists one day (when there are too many of them and they want a minimum fare and safeguards against competition like Uber and Grab ) and then when there is a tropical downpour and taxis are scarce they are suddenly free market capitalists again - naming their own exorbitant prices. You an't have it both ways boys!

A way of life. The ridiculous taboos continues on.
Very true. It is as it has always been, with the boys in green in control. Not so long ago they could pull the strings from within the barracks. Not so anymore and so the reason for the Coup is exposed. Take full control before the myth was exposed. Hard to see it any other now.

Appalling maybe but just a reflection of the low morals and human behavourial standards of present day Thai society.
Yes, you are probably right. The level of violence, especially domestic violence, in thee shows is terrible.

Agreed. But I am reserved about Muslims. Unlike all the other groups that have come into Aust, starting with Greeks and Ities after WW2, it seems to me that Muslims never integrate anywhere in the world. Everyone else finds their own niche and settles in - live and let live. Not sure Muslims ever have and ever will.
Yes, point taken but I think what needs to be kept in mind is that they (Muslims) are not necessarily an homogenous group. Islam is quite moderate in parts of Indonesia and Malaysia and indeed there are many Muslims from both these countries already living quite happily in Australia. Another important factor is also how well they can speak English. This is a huge barrier to integration and one of the reasons that it is not until the second generation comes along and are near native speakers that things improve. But I go back to my original point. It is about the economics. As Bob Marley famously sang '...a hungry man is an angry man..' If you look at the parts of the UK that are beset with immigrant problems they are also some of the most economically disadvantaged parts of the UK. Chicken and egg? Maybe.

What this bloke actually said was that Muslim immigration into Australia should be stopped.
He also stated that all terrorists are Muslims, and that the vast majority of Mulsim immigrants stay on welfare.
He called for immigration that favoured “European Christian” values and demnanded a plebiscite on which migrants can come to Australia.
Politically incorrect and rather unwise - but there are many who agree with him.
He is being accused of hate speech and racial vilification and they want him suspended.
But what is the left wing media up in arms and unhinged outrage about?
And on what are they basing their claims that he is a Nazi and Jew hater?
This....................Quote: “The final solution to the immigration problem is, of course, a popular vote.”
What he said was that the Australian people should vote on whether so many Muslims should be allowed to immigrate into Australia.
But because he used the words "final solution" he is being accused of all sorts of Nazi atrocities.
It is unbelieveable. The media and lefties attack with venom anyone that dare questions Mulim immigration in Australia.
Remind you of anyone??
Yep. The Nazis. Speaking out against offical dogma was not allowed.
I dont 100% agree with his speech, but he has the right to say it (in Parliament), and many people agree with him.
Especially those living near all the Muslim gangs in Melbourne and Sydney (and whose relatives are in Sweden and other European countries).
Agreed, the fact that he enjoys the freedom to say what he said and indeed in the Commonwealth parliament means that free speech is alive and well in Australia. The fact that people can attack him for it likewise means they have access to free speech. Whilst I personally don't agree with his sentiments, I support his right to express them. His appropriation of the term ' final solution' was probably rather clumsy but hardly a hanging offense.
If we look back to the late seventies and early eighties it was all about Vietnamese drug gangs. Where are they now? Integrated, working and mostly prospering. Most of the issues around crime and newly arrived immigrants is related to economics and not religion. The Muslims are just the latest group of 'whipping boys' . They won't be the last.

Why is this even a news story. Assault is assault. Some of the behaviour portrayed in Thai soaps is appalling.

11 minutes ago, atyclb said:and what is the monthly wage at these top schools?
Good international schools, especially those in Bangkok, pay a salary equivalent to what these qualified teachers would receive in their own countries. In addition, they will receive re-location expenses, health insurance and some form of housing allowance. Consequently, there are some very good teachers at many of the top schools. Most are recruited through international school job fairs. At the end of the day, like most things in life, you get what you pay for.

It is still a bad look for tourism. All show and window-dressing for domestic consumption.

As can be seen in the picture that road is capable of taking 3 vehicles abreast which I know as I too have had to move over to accommodate a passing vehicle which was in too much of a hurry to wait 30 secs. I also see a continuous yellow line on that picture, another of this countries wasted efforts at safety as just about no-one takes notice or even understands what it means.
That continuous yellow line is purely ornamental as are white lines at pedestrian crossings, No U-Turn signs, bollards and on it goes.

There are certainly similarities between the current situation and the lead-up to those terrible events of 1992. However, I don't see Prayuth caving in the same way Suchinda did and one must remember that there was a very powerful 'mediator ' in residence at that time. Not so now.

Mr BagFix. Central World, Emporium. Have used many times.Very reliable. Yes, you can get it fixed on the street. Hit and miss though.

Ive said it before and I'll say it again. The 25000 killed every year on the roads is the not the extraordinary thing, it is the fact that that figure isn't higher. When you see the way people ride/drive here it is a miracle that figure isn't 50,000!
Sad story.

I collapsed in the street in lower Sukhumvit some years ago. It was late afternoon and I was on the way home from the office dressed in my work clothes. I was immediately helped by several street vendors and some passing tourists, one of whom was a doctor. Several people stayed with me until I felt well enough to go home nearby. Very different situation however to the one that this poor chap found himself in. Late at night or early in the morning of a bar area in Pattaya. People obviously thought that he had had one too many and was sleeping it off. Sad, but probably understandable that people made assumptions about his situation.

If/when Thai;and implements the kinds of safety measures that exist in the west the country will no longer an affordable destination for the majority of low-end budget travelers that currently come from China. Simple as that. As others have also mentioned, there is now a dangerously high reliance on the tourists China. According to TAT it is around 25%. That could go badly wrong if Chinese tourists turn to other destinations. some have mentioned Cambodia. Well at the moment Cambodia simply doesn't have the infrastructure to handle 10 million Chinese tourists. However, the Cambodians are building casinos to attract the Chinese. That will no doubt put a dent in things. There are also other factors at play that make health and safety issues for tourists difficult for Thais to manage. One is the chain-of-command structure which was shown to be flawed in the recent cave rescue as well as the boat sinking in Phuket. There are 'turf wars' that exist that extend from the 'meat wagons' (private ambulances) chasing accident victims around town, to who gets to hire out emergency equipment and which hospital gets the victims. And on it goes. Always have good insurance cover and be extra cautious here.

Have been to the new Villa on Soi 11 several times now as it is literally 5 minutes walk from where I reside. It probably doesn't have quite the range of products that some of the other branches. However, it is pretty good. I'd still prefer to get my seafood,fruit/veg from a local fresh market.
