  1. Hey all,

I am interested in working some part time teaching in BKK. I don't need a ton of it, there is a reason i don't want to work full time after all, but i might like it if i could pick up one or two part time jobs, or one part time job and a few private students to tutor one on one.

    my question is...

Is it easy to find plenty of part time work in BKK, or are there mostly only full time offers?

Language schools, agencies, private tutoring, whatever, i'm fine with any and all of it, i have experience teaching a variety of different ages, and class sizes, so it's all good.

If i arrive in BKK, and hit the job search hard, will i have any problem picking up enough part time work?

  2. Right ok, i understand people are limited in what the can say/tell/advise to me when it comes to activity that is technically illegal.

So i'll ask one more question, that should be able to be answered without anybody having to break any forum rules...

If i was looking for a job without a degree, would i be able to find part time work with say a language school or a tutoring agency even more easily then a full time job with a school?

  3. The biggest problem is that most places do not give you a work permit and you are constantly having to make visa runs. This gets really quite difficult because periodically the officials crack down and issue a 'red stamp' in the passport that doesn't allow you to go back to that embassy/consulate for a tourist visa.

heh ;) well this doesn't bother me too much. I lived in Bangkok for a year before, was on a tourist visa the whole time i was there, so i am used to the visa runs. However i must admit when i was there before the red stamp thing started up shortly before i left, so i didn't have to worry about this most of the time i was there, so i guess that could change things, but, oh well.... if i have to leave the country suddenly because of this issue, i can do that, things could be worse after all.

so this doesn't really bother me that much.

So i guess my question is, if i don't mind working illegally and without a work permit, can i land a job.

Essentially how easy will it be for me to get a job, if i don't mind working illegally?

are there a ton of jobs i can find? or only a few?

will they be hard to find, or easy?

What would be the best way to go about looking for them? walk around in the city? or online?

To put my question another way...

if i decided to go to Bangkok, without a degree, but also not caring if i have to work illegally, will i most likely be able to land a job easily, say within a week or two of arrival?

    or are the scarce?

  4. Hey all,

I am interested in teaching in BKK, but i have no degree.

I have experience teaching in China, and lately the way it's been there, all i have to do is enter the country, look around for some jobs, go to a few interviews, and if they like me and i like them, they hire me, i accept, and that's it. Very simple, very clean cut.

it seems it might not be nearly as simple in Bangkok, especially without a degree.

I do have TESOL certification, but once again i know in Thailand CELTA means more, and TESOL doesn't mean so much.

    What i have:

2 years teaching experience in China

    TESOL certificate

    but...

    NO DEGREE

i know outside of BKK in the provinces it can be easy to obtain completely legal work even without a degree, but i'd really prefer to work in BKK.

so if i wanted to try to work in BKK, what would be my best options without a degree?

i looked at some part time job offers, one on one tutoring and such that didn't really require a degree. Would part time be a good choice?

to be honest, i am more interested in part time then i am in full time work, so if i could find enough part time work that didn't require a degree, that would be fine with me.

Or should i be looking for full time?

What kind of paper work/red tape/hoops to jump through should i expect to deal with if i get a job but have no degree?

For starters, i just want to know how realistic it would be for me to find a job, full time or part time, in BKK without a degree, but with experience. I don't need to know about the salaries or the working conditions just yet, just want to know if it is even realistic for me to get my foot in the door.

    is it?

    and if so

what is my best bet/the approach to take in landing a job?

i know Ajarn, any other good places to look?

    Kind Regards

    Ivan

  5. Hey all,

I know this has probably been asked in various forms many times before, so I'll start by saying, sorry for bringing it up yet again.

I've actually been living here in Bangkok for almost a year already now, but haven't done any teaching here, or even looked in to it, but now I may be interested.

    I don't have a degree OR a CELTA.

I do have a tesol/tefl certificate and some teaching experience in China.

What kind of work, if any, can I expect to get?

What kind of salary could I expect per hour/week/month? (I know it isn't that much)

Are there any agencies that can set up 1 on 1 teaching?

Are there language mills or what have you that I could kind of walk in and teach a class here a class there on a pay per class basis?

I'd be looking for something like one of the above, preferably the first one, and am less interested in teaching an entire class of students. But if that's what the best option is I can easily do it, I have before after all.

I don't have super high expectations, just let me know what I can expect with no degree and that's all I'm looking for.

  6. I'm sorry your post has had no responses, as a few people would be very interested in this information.

And your one of those people? and not one who has an answer to it?

    ??????????????????????

Don't you think that's kind of clear from my post? If I had an answer I would post it.

Fair enough :) Well then hopefully somebody will come along with an answer at some point

  7. Hey All,

I'm interested in possibly moving to Manila, and have some questions on getting set up there.

How easy is it to open a Bank Account and rent an apartment on just a tourist visa/visa on arrival?

What documents will I need to show to open a bank account? What documents will I need to rent an apartment?

If anybody can give me the names of any Banks or addresses/names of apartments that require less documentation from foreigners then perhaps some others do, that would be quite helpful.

  8. Dr. Viroj Chodchoy, seems to be the favorite, among the T.V community. Does he have a very good general knowledge of the entire subject. It seems most of the people going to him where there for testicular cancer.

If I'm going to have a lesion/sore checked as well as possibly find out if I have an infection or possibly an STD (I know STD test are sperate,) is he still the man for the job?

  9. Hey all,

Im not exactly loving it, but it seems that a visit with a good urologist is in order for me.

What hospital do people feel is the most reputable and has the best service?

Can anybody recommend me a particular doctor, Im pretty sure my problem isnt cancer, its more likely to be either just something temporary or possibly a symptom of an STD. What urologist, would you guys recommend specifically, for dealing with such a problem?

  10. Hey all,

I need to do the Visa run to Vientiane again soon and just have a few questions I could use some clarity on.

Are they still offering free double entries, or just single entries?

If I go on the bus leaving from Hualamong tomorrow evening, will I be able to get through all of the various border check points and get to the embassy before the close the visa application at noon? I guess really it depends on when the border office at Nong Kai opens, is it around 9 or so?

What are all of the scans that I need? main passport page, visa, and the third one? The current arrival/departure card stapled in to the passport??

Other then these scans, it's just two copies of my picture the form they give me and my 0 baht for the tourist visa right?

Where do people recommend staying in Vientiane? How is the place right near the embassy?

    Regards

  11. Hey all,

Need to go to Cambodia this weekand for the visa run. Just wondering if there is a bus that leaves from Lumpini. I'm thinking of the 150b (for farang) bus that should leave at around 4:00 or 4:30 in the morning.

So yeah, is there such a bus that leaves from the bus stop outside Lumpini early saturday morning? If so is it in fact 150b and when does it leave.

A pretty simple question, I know, sorry if it's been posted somewhere else and I just don't know/am too lazy to look.

  12. Also if it is a company calling you, has the company set up International dialing, some companies do forget this. Some companies also stop international calls from offices, without first entering a code. You should check with the caller.

Yeah I think this is the issue. I'm assuming you mean international dialing set up so that it auto imputs the 00. Yesterday I talked to one person working there and they dialed the number as you guys are telling me to, with 66 followed by my 10 digit number minus the 0. It didn't work. Today I talked to somebody else and I asked her to change my number, adding the 2. She mentioned the 00 at the beginning so I assumed that the guy yesterday must have been doing that as well. I assume now that yesterday the guy wasn't using the 00 and thus the problem.

Thanks everyone for your assistance, wasnt trying to confuse or annoy, sorry if I did.

  13. What are they calling?

    Your Mobile or A landline?

if mobile 0066 then your mobile number less the first zero

example your mobile is 08 12345678

    then they dial 0066 8 12345678

    If landline number 02 5501150

    then they dial 0066 2 5501150

so easy and all the others above have explained it to

I was asking again precisely because everyone was not in agreement.

It certainly seems easy, but I've already had them try this and they were not able to get through to me.

They are calling from a landline

I am receiving the call on a mobile phone

so it is a landline in germany calling a mobile phone in bangkok

This is a company (click to pay) that is calling me, so I don't think the cheap tarrif number you mentioned applies.

Don't want to seem like I don't appreciate the help, I certainly do, but they already dialed 0066 then my number minus the 0, and it didn't work.

There's a website called timeandate that has this info. It said to type 0066 2 then the last 7 digits of my phone number. This is the same as what mdechgan said. I don't know if that was for landline to mobile, but I think that's what he meant .

Can anybody varify the 0066 2 last 7 digits of my number, is a viable way for a german landline to call a thai mobile?

@dudemister, I do have a 10 digit number, but all the numbers start with 08. I meant the 8 digit number unique to me.

  14. You only use (2) if calling a Bangkok land line. It is not used for mobile numbers

Okay starting to get some conflicting info here.

I am in Bangkok getting a call from Germany.

I already know that 00 is the international number they need to dial followed by 66.

    Landline to mobile

landline dials 00 66 then what, people don't seem to agree.

is there an 8? is there a 2? do they dial 8 digits or 7?

  15. Yeah, I'm in Bangkok.

So your saying for a landline calling me from Germany, it would be 00 66 2 then the last 7 digits of my 8 digit number, so no 08 and no first digit of my number, is this correct?

    Regards

  16. Hey all,

I've been having some trouble with receiving a call from Germany. I've given them a few different variations of my number to call and none have worked.

The last one I gave was 00 66 2 8 my number , I figured this one would be good, but it wasn't

They are calling from a land line to my mobile. Does anybody know the correct way for them to call me?

  17. I would always travel with an ATM card that I could prove funds if needed.

I was thinking this, but my only atm card is for a thai account, which since I don't have a work permit or a more perminet form of visa I'm technically not supposed to have. It seems potentially risky to show this card to them. Maybe I'm just being paronoid. I do have a credit card from the U.S.
