  1. ^ off course we are guests here, but we are paying guests and should be treated with some consideration, should we not?

One of the many problems with noise here is that people have chosen quiet areas in the past, only to have "noise" move in on them at a later date, due to lack of zoning etc. This, along with many other things make people think twice about committing to Pattaya for the long term, myself included.

I get a laugh when I go by the beer bars at the corner of Soi 2 and 2nd Rd., each one has a live band trying to blast the crap they play louder then one next door, are the customers there really having conversations or reading lips, which must be difficult because they are all too sauced to do either

  2. The fact that Thailand's law and order processes are dysfunctional and pharmacies appear largely unregulated does not excuse any foreigner for purchasing prescription drugs, ie. knowingly breaking the law.

Or just because a home owner forgets to lock his front door at night does not excuse the opportunist burglar from stealing stuff that doesn't belong to him.

Social responsibility starts with the individual.

Well, informed expats might know the score, but it is totally unrealistic to expect tourists to know that SOME meds they can easily buy OTC without scrip when most ALL meds are available here OTC without scrip are illegal, and which ones. If they want to crackdown, the only ethical method is to go after the pharmacies, not INNOCENT tourists, and I do mean INNOCENT.

I can see where you are coming from without even raising an eyebrow at the words ethics relating to Thai law enforcement. The lawyers would love this dog fight in any ethical country now wouldn't they?

It's like the same kid drinking alcoholic beverages on the flight from New Zealand (not saying he did but for the sake of argument here). At 17 years old, there's not a lot that a kid can get away with in any jurisdiction in most civilised countries, be it smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, consensual sex or recreational AND prescription drugs (without a prescription). It's always easy to claim youthful ignorance, replete with the look of wide-eyed innocence AFTER getting caught. Just because you think you can break the law and get a way with it is not an excuse to break the law.

My rule of thumb that stood me in good stead when I first became the 'international gypsy' at 20 year-old was, "If it's prohibited or illegal at home, it's probably best avoided elsewhere."

So let me see if I have the correct information, prescriptions are not issued by Dr's in LOS, but if you want to 'legally' buy Zanax you can do so a hospital or clinic.

  3. Thank you all for the comments, it's possible a spacious 2 bdrm house may also be suitable for my idea.

Which ever I might decide on would be a rental situation

I also need to learn more about legal issues as this project is related to the 'entertainment' venue

  4. Can anyone give approx. price (per sqf), although I'm sure very few people live in a 'shophouse', again maybe this isn't the correct term, is it permitted, of course to do so would require a bathroom, I don't know if some, none or all are equipped

Would SunBelt be a good starting point, I have a confidential buisness I would like to explore, also needs to be located as near the Pattaya tourist area as possible

Depending on replies a private PM concerning a partner which I really don't need as far as finances, maybe marketing and buisness savy

Will be in PTY for vacation next week

  5. As a potential retireree I find your post confirming my feelings even though I'm only in PTY as a vacationer, a lot less smiles then my first trips of a approx. 8 years ago

I no longer that 'care free' feel, keep my eyes and ears much more wide open now, I've haven't written PTY off yet, as it is still by far the most suitable 'satisfying' destination I've found

Do hope the apparent trend of what I would call despair slows down and even reverses itself

  6. I'd be really interested in looking at the World Health Organization figures for 2009. Does anyone know where I can get them? Just curious really.

I've been living in Thailand for a long time, and as a single girl, I'm definitely feeling more edgy about being here than I ever have before.

I've heard, like we all have, so many crimes both both reported and not, against foreigners and within the Thai community, over the years...

But I feel recently as thought they have been ramping up a bit. They are getting more violent. Robberies are increasing where I live, and some of the stories involve the person having a gun pointed at their head. The motorcycle bag snatch is increasing, and I've heard a lot more brutal stories recently than I ever had before - murders, shootings, robberies ending in violence. I now sleep with an inside light on, as well as my porch lights.

Has it always been this way...? I don't think so.

Although I can't say that in my time here I have ever been physically assaulted, or injured in any way. (Although I have been robbed.) But I like living here, if I didn't I would have left. However, more recently I have been thinking about a contingency plan... Where will I go next... I feel as though it's getting more dangerous and it may be time to move on. The constant visa hassle is no help... though I'll save that rant for the visa forum.

I have always thought if I keep my head down, do my thing, I will be OK. I don't drink and go to bars, or stay out late at night. I don't do business in Thailand. Better not to. An old friend of mine had a gun pulled on him when he became too successful. Some jealous locals decided to run him out of town. He left Thailand shortly after and has never been back. He was a lovely guy, gentle and polite. He in no way asked for it.

So yeah, when I hear about all these gun crimes, I get scared. I personally feel as though Thailand is getting more and more dangerous, and this will only increase as the economy worsens and the Thais start to feel the pinch... and of course, when the event that we can't talk about here happens... which I don't think is gonna be too far down the road. What about the power vacuum left behind then.

Trying to compare Thailand with other countries, though, especially those in the west is like trying to compare apples with oranges. You can't just take the Bronx and compare it with Pattaya, it doesn't work like that. This is not our country, and never will be. We are not Thai. We will be the first in the firing line. Period. You just need to be in an accident or try and report something to the police to know that. If you read the papers from back home it looks like you could easily get stabbed by some crazy psycho on your way to Sainsburys... But, here, it's more about what doesn't get reported and it's much more about whats beneath the friendly smiles that we need to be worried about and I'm sad to say, but I honestly think that my stay here in Thailand will not be for much longer. That's just the way I see things going.

  7. Supposedly the highest quality fish oil capsules have no foul smell or taste, I buy my capsules on line and the company selling them (N3Oceanic) claims the liquid form is just a matter of convience with no difference in potetency

  8. Western Union is expensive as hel_l

But here's my question which may have been covered somewhere before

I was in a Wells Fargo bank here in the U.S., being I'm not that good with a computer I inquired about making wire transfers from here (U.S.) to a bank in Thailand by telephone, no problem

What they can't do is allow me to make a wire transfer from Thailand using my (U.S.) Wells Fargo bank account by telephone

Any advice how I can make a wire transfer from a U.S. bank while in Thailand to my Thai bank acct by telephone

  9. Soi Girl Hunter mentions prices are up on Soi 6, is this across the board everywhere on everything or are you talking about certain bars, barfines, or drinks and ST/LT

Could you give some examples, particular interest to me would be Red Point, the Halifaxs and Saigon Girl

  10. I also don't what is meant by the dark side

Do you renters have issues with owners or managers who give rent raises after you move in, can you get a rental agreement that guarentees the price, and does it means anything

  11. Did a search but didn't address my questions, where is the best place to buy a safe, how much and any recommendations

  12. :)

Does anyone know what time at night the last bus leaves PTY to BC

Does 60bt sound right for the fare?

Local busses stop reasonable early I think, but I've occasionally got busses from BKK or Korat to Rayong, arriving at aruond 11pm. I think they leave PTY 8ish, and pass BC on the way.

    Try Nakonchai Air for details.

60bt sounds about right, or was a year or so back from PTY to Rayong.
