  1. Demonstrate the marriage is legitimate & how you've actually considered supporting your family with a reasonable income, what's all the fuss about - 18k is modest, if you're not earning that, you should be doing overtime, not wasting your time protesting.

I do not think you have grasped the concept of realities.

There are old age pensioners, who are married to Non Eu Nationals who cannot, even if they wanted to, return to the UK. Their pension is too small and they could not get work even if they wanted it.

In the meantime, there are 1000's lined up in France waiting on the chance to illegally enter the UK, once they are there, the chances of them being removed are slim.

The EEA in conjunction with the EU Court then issue dictats that facilitate sham marriages that allow Non EU Nationals entry to the UK.

    You missed my first sentence.

Maybe UK immigration does not consider an OAP recently married in LoS as anything other than a marriage of convenience.

  2. It really baffles me why anyone overstays unless it's medical or other mitigating circumstances....

What baffles me is the inverse.

i have tha absolute luxury of a retirement visa, and always have.

What I do not get is how people can stay for years, and jump through hoop after hoop. How much DOES all that in and out add up to?

Pull out a calculator. 20,000 maximum fine is cheap, if you stay long enough!

The trick is, it is .. as is so many things in life .. all about your attitude the day you confront the problem. I mean, we have Gilo .... as he posted .. overstay 11 Years , pay the 20,000, and turn right back around and come to the kingdom.

    He is a math genius!

If it can be pulled off, fair enough, I take my hat off. Today we saw Hoteliers warned about reporting their guests within 24 hours, there have been recent spotchecks of foreigners at some sleepy beach towns & you need your passport for anything involving the cops/ hospitals/ bank/ schools even a wat won't take you in as a foreigner unless you have a valid visa.

I guess for most people the inconvenience of doing short weekends around S/E Asia and getting some Thainess respite is actually an added benefit to having your options open, rather than a hindrance. For those that don't want or need any of the above, they can take their chances. 11 years is quite remarkable.

    Thank you, good stuff.

I am not advocating over stay, or saying it is "the way to go" The best point several people have made is the life of "looking over the shoulder."

I am sorry, I have five years in Thailand, and no bank, hospital etc.... has ever looked at my Visa. and since I have never been arrested, no police either.

Inside cover of passport ... yes. Visa, no (And I have two different Thailand banks I deal with.)

The ONLY time my passport leaves its lock box is for travel or to interface with the government (get driver license)

if people would spend less time trying to prove me wrong all the time and LISTEN for a change, OMG, they might learn something. (Coulson, this is not directed at you)

    (1) Make a high quality scan of the inside cover of passport

    (2) Make high quality scan of visa (most of us have one, if you don't, pick another page to scan.

    (3) Go to a print shop, and have them print these images on the highest quality gloss paper.

    (4) Put it all front to back (If they are clever, they will print it front / back so they can just fold and trim it)

    (5) Laminate it to a credit card size for daily use, and one twice that size when you really want something "official" (MBK - 150 Baht for SIX cards)

The result is startling. It looks BETTER and more official than a government issued document.

Now remember, never claim it is a government document, that is forgery then .. but to get in and out of office buildings, ID at the hospital, and YES .. at the front desk ... theses WORK..

Why? The 300 baht per day clerk taking this information is NOT Immigration, all they need is the information presented in a way that is obviously your picture and numbers.

5 years ... 100 % results. (Note, I still HAVE the passport with me when I travel .. since I need to get through the airport, and in case the Hotel does not accept my "Card" .. but the last time I checked, front desk clerks are not looking for an argument with a Farang guest)

And of the hundred times I have used it, you all know the next sentence, 99% of that, they NEVER REALLY LOOKED AT IT. It was official looking, has my picture, and looks like it just came from the American embassy.

Would love to scan it and show you all .. 555 ... not today. :-)

    Love your work.

  4. Penang is not a recommended option I'm sure many others will advise the same, the officials down there are all going through a menopause it would appear.

If I were you I'd go to Laos and get the 60 day single entry and extend once inside. The majority of red flags are associated with multiple back to back 'exempt' visas so I don't think you have much to be concerned about.

  5. I have another question, sorry for all the questions, I have just read an article on the tinterweb which I am a little unsure about, I am going to PP to get a 60 day thai visa from the thai embassy there.

You’ll need to have your passport, two photographs (here’s where you can get passport photographs in Phnom Penh) your proposed address in Thailand, your date of arrival, your means of arrival and proof of onward travel. The visa takes four days and costs $60. If you do not have the above information, particularly proof of onward travel, they will not issue you a visa.

When they say proof of onward travel, do they mean proof of onward travel after your 60 days in Thailand? for me that would be kind of unknown at this point, I might choose to go to the UK, or I might choose to go back to Cambodia? or does that mean proof of travel out of PP as in my flight back to Thailand? Also date of arrival where?

    Thanks again

    p.s good info here http://www.movetocambodia.com/practicalities/how-to-get-a-visa-for-thailand-in-phnom-penh-cambodia/

Any onward flight outbound from Thailand will keep them happy, if it came to that.

    Carry on.....

  6. It seems you have the advice you need from your legal rep, so up to you.

Just a thought, since you effectively are buying 3 single (one way) fares, is it not more economical to get her a return ticket? Then you can tag onto the return flight one-way?

Then you also have backup document for her in the event she gets a hard time on ariival?

  7. BritTim pretty much covered it.

Despite the number of back to back tourist exempt visa, changing the order with a 60 day tourist visa and getting a 30 day extension buys you a decent slab of time. It will also save visa pages on your passport as you pointed out, doing exempt runs to Cambodia is costing you 2 pages a month.

  8. Are they interpreting your 'similar response' as a form of sarcasm or mocking, maybe?

I have seen humour turn into sulking very very quickly, once the sulking begins it can take a while to stop

I see this every time I open a thread on TV and not a Thai in sight...

So we're not that different after all.

    (except for the sulking)

  9. I think according the law, (I know this is the law in most European countries) as a foreigner you must carry your passport, or other document issued by Thai govt. showing your identity, with you at all times (not when swimming of course or diving). I think the officers are a bit liberal on the enforcement of this law thankfully.

In fact the majority of European Countries do not require you to carry your passport or I.D. This applies to the UK, Denmark, Ireland, Norway where it is not law for anyone to carry a passport and they have no National I.D. card. The following countries issue I.D.s but there is a no need to carry rule (no need photocopy either): Switzerland, Sweden, Liechtenstein, Italy, Ireland, France, Finland and Austria.

However, one of the exceptions is Germany where you can get locked up for up to 12hours if you cannot produce an I.D. Perhaps this is a left over from World War II. Most other countries accept any form of identification, even a book club membership card in some countries.

In Thailand you do not need to carry your passport at all times but a photocopy of main and visa page is accepted by order of the Government. You may have to produce the passport at the police station later if requested but unlikely. I have been here since 1982 and never had a problem. In my case talking Thai and showing my driving license is enough, they have never asked to see my passport.

    +1

I think that you may add Spain to the list of countries issuing their citizens with ID cards.

For sure, i can confirm that a Thai residing in Spain will need to apply for a "Foreigners ID Card" and when "armed" with that can come and go as they please for the next five years. For a Thai wife there are loots of hoops to jump thriugh and it takes about 6 months to complete.

For other Member state people residing in Spain they will be issued with an Identification number and a small credit card sized ID card.

Even if you didnt have that simple ID card with you, knowing your number would be enough - it´s all on their national database.

Fantastic, thanks for that heads up......

I can't wait for the next piece of irrelevant information about being approached in maybe ,Ukraine? as an Israeli tourist? with a Mexican wife? and something isn't in order, but guess what???..........having a copy of your passport does not harm your situation, it can only help!

  10. For a long term option check out the East side. Kai bay is a good base for a couple of weeks as another post mentioned. I hope, as someone who is not familiar with the island, you can get a good idea in 2 weeks. I never would associate Koh Chang with somewhere to stay longer than a few months. The ratio of locals/ holiday makers/ backpackers and ex pats is kind of different there to anywhere else in Thailand. Not great medical facilities, getting around is a nightmare (careful on the bike) and getting off the island for weekends or trips is slightly more time consuming.......just food for thought!

While you're there try and get to Koh Kood for a night, is meant to be pretty unspoilt!

    Enjoy...

  11. Thought I'd posted a response already, anywho.......

I have friends in TWL, they have reported this happening before. The last time I heard of it was a year ago. In a similar manner, they came into a beach restaurant / bar and asked all foreigners for ID and took photo's of everyone. In one case, Thai drivers license was enough (better carry a photocopy of your visa/ passport anyway) & it was all rather friendly. After finishing up, went on their way with no issues.

Few stories went around that it was maybe related to an incident up the Coast, but why speculate! Pathio district is quite a wealthy Thai community, compared to elsewhere, and it is relatively unspoiled. I don't think it's much more than keeping tabs on who's around town and showing a presence!

  12. Maybe.....it just seems hotter...for longer. The other day it got down to about 33 degrees here and it felt like heavan!

Sorry! I didn't realise you were just looking for a chat & forgive me for providing a link which answered your question laugh.png

(recorded 51 last week here, but only 10% humidity, in the shade, 48 & 30% humidity today, not even summer yet, can we switch places?)

  13. Conflicting definitions of HI-So

    # female friend uni grad working for multinational company says hi-so means anyone with a lot of money regardless of education or lack thereof.

    # male friend working for major thai airline refers to hi-so also as those with high education example; doctor / lawyer

There should be no conflict, being a member of high society certainly does not require you to be educated.

    ( And getting into law/med school is expensivethumbsup.gif )

  14. Marriage to a Hi-So girl should definitely be worth it. But chances of his girl being hi-so is slim to none.

2 million baht is chump change for your typical hi so. Add another zero to that then we can call it hi-so.

If I had the chance to marry an hi-so I'd definitely jump at the opportunity. You'll be pretty much set if you get marry into a hi-so family, the parents will shower you with gifts, you can use their connections etc etc

Pretty much a lavish lifestyle guaranteed forever.

Replace the words 'hi-so' with 'farang' in your post......sound familiar?

Unless you're completely taking the p155!
