The only people you see packing guns in Pattaya are the coppers.

SURE - they are wearing it on their hip for all to see. Peel back the curtain.......I was here for 6 or 7 years before I realized so many of the people that I know and those around me have hand guns. As for Pattaya, the number one Safety Zone for all of Thailand, I'm sure you are right; "only the coppers"

  2. I have an item to ship to the US that weighs at least 25 kilos - to be weighed. Does anyone with experience on this topic know what are my options for shipping? Thai post has a limit of 20 kilos. I know that there is Fedex in this country but I'm guessing there might be a cheaper option. I expect to make a crate for it with project wood scraps that I have.  I'm more interested in price and reliability than schedule. Anybody?

In other cultures, including a lot of America, this is NOT common. In fact, the word <deleted> is almost NEVER used in the states and most people tend not to wind each other up as much due to the lawsuit culture, threat of defamation of character, the public sensitivity issues, etc.

As an experienced American I have a different view of this. The word <deleted> is frequently used but it is "fighting words" when we use it. It is not typically used in a friendly way. And your reasons why do not seem familiar to me either. Yes, we have a lawsuit culture but it does not spill over into the first meeting of a casual acquaintance. In my opinion we just have a different approach to being friendly. Or some people are not interested in being friendly and keep to themselves. Windups are saved for when you are past the initial meet and greet phase when you are really getting along with each other. I would sum it up by saying that it is simply a different style. You wInker. BWAAA HAA HAAA -  winding up my new Brit friends here in Thailand by calling one a wInker was not met with any merriment. So much for my attempt at cultural camaraderie. Maybe I'll pop 'round to your bar and let you buy me a cold one.

  4. Some cats are quite nasty and can really do some damage in a fight. Suppose your cat had manage to blind one of the dogs in one eye. The neighbors come around and want you to pay. Now what? I think you need to wake up to what happens in a dog and cat world. I have 2 dogs and I take my responsibility for their behavior seriously. they are seldom outside my gate on their own and if they caused a problem I understand it would be all my fault for letting them out.

     Why isn't that acceptable?

I don't think anyone is saying the rules are unacceptable. It seems to me that the real issue is that the rules are not enforced the same in each location AND that the rules change so so frequently. If all was crystal clear the No. 1 visa admin on TV would not have over 14,000 posts helping people untangle the details.

  6. 2012 Toyota Vios J series for sale. Priced to sell at 365,000 Baht or nearest offer. This car is nearly new with only 18,xxx kilometers on it - 11,xxx miles. Most of these 2012 model years now have 60,000 or more kms of use. I am the second expat owner and bought it when it was 1 year old with 5,000 km on it as he was transferred to Norway with his job in big oil. I paid 470,000 and it sold for 590,000 new. I cannot say that it is flawless but it is nearly so. There is some minor scratching on the lower left front bumper where a motorbike clipped me while he was racing through traffic. This flaw shows in the first photo. I have kept service up to date through Toyota and oil changes on my own and the car is stored under cover. The car is equipped as follows - 1.3 L petrol engine, 4 speed automatic transmission, electric key door entry, air conditioning, AM/FM, single disc sound system with 4 speakers. This is an economical and comfortable ride. The car is located in RANONG, 120 kilometers west of Chumpon, on the Andaman coast. For those in Bangkok, there are 2 flights a day into Ranong. For those in Phuket, it is a 4 to 5 hour drive up the coast. I am selling because I am outside of Thailand for 6 months a year now and no longer need it as it just sits.

  7. Also it is not so unusual here or in western culture to request personal preferences. My Thai wife does it. "Mai pet mak!" "Suk suk!" etc. How do you want your steak? Your eggs? I'm glad that we can have a chance to eat it our way or I'd have to give up most Thai dishes. If I eat it With 6 chilies instead of 2, my acid re-flux makes me regret it. Ask for what you want. Then eat it anyway while the kitchen staff is having a good laugh. I've lately, AFTER it is served and in front of me, asked if they please did not spit on it. In Thai. That gets a laugh.

  8. I'm near an island where it is possible to get a beach hut for 500 baht per day. That would be 15,000 baht per month. I think your budget is not feasible in a beach area. Beaches means tourists and tourists mean higher prices. I once stayed in a townhouse duplex for 5k per month but not in a tourist town. Cha Am might work for you but I'm not sure about the girls. Also I thought that Chiang Mai is still in Thailand.

  9. I too use the Easy Cut for 120 baht. I use the one at Thonglor BTS. I've had some very good results there and a couple that were marginal trying to get the top cut shorter. I notice that style is popular for Thai men. Sometimes ridiculously so. I also notice that they have a rapid turnover in staff so that part is a little disappointing.
