  1. I need to go to Chaeng Wattana government complex from Bangna. There's no option. I have a 4x4 pickup but dont want to submerge it unless necessary. How bad is the flooding? Can I go on the expressway, down to Vibhavadi and then left to Ch. Wattana road (to Pakkret) , then into the govt centre? Or should I just take the skytrain to Mor Chit and then jump on a truck?

Took the #10 van from Central to Chatujak this morning. Most of Chaengwattana seems dry, but the van did use the overpass over Klong Prapa, and it seemed there might still be some water in the road in front of Lotus, not sure. On the other side, the road seemed dry, but the army base still has water. One of the passengers watned to get off at TOT, there were a couple of inches of water in the curb lane. Driver let the passenger who wanted to go to IT Square off at the bottom of the flyover for Viphavadee-Rangsit. So instead of the normal route, the van went over V-R flyover, then U-turned to get back to V-R and then to Chatujak...that part was all dry. Would have to assume there must be water in front of IT Square if the van avoided it? Should have an update on Chinnakhet area tomorrow as one of my staff is going into retrieve stuff.

There is no water around IT Sq neither behind it or in front of it.

Chaengwattana Road is dry. My staff tells me that some of the sois still have water, so it's possible the gov't complex has some water. You could drive, park at IT Square since it seems that's dry or else at Avenue Chaengwattana or Big C, Makro or Central Plaza and take public transport into the complex if there is water that is too high for your 4X4.

This morning's Nation said the northbound lane of V-R still had water from Laksi which probably explains why the van detoured yesterday.

  3. Chaeng Watthana road between Tesco Lotus and Big C (Soi 14) today open for pick-up trucks and busses.

Also saw one brave guy on a real motorcycle (bike) passing me. Big C and Avenue shopping areas are dry.

In our village (Soi 14) the water in front of our house is still 90cm deep!

Dropping about an inch every day.

There was an announcement that the remaining flood water from Chaeng Watthana road and government complex would be pumped into our village (to make those other areas dry), but people protested against it. They should just pump the water into the Khlong Premprachakorn, the canal along Vipawadee that goes all the way to Bang Sue, where they can pump it into the river. The idea to pump it into a residential area to the North (and not to the South) is bonkers. What's the added value when those government officials can go to "work" easier, anyhow?

Thank you for the update. I hadn't been down that direction until last Friday and saw all the big trucks across from Makro organized to get the government staff to work. I was wondering how high the water was on the other side of Klong Prapa. At Chinnakhet, back behind Durakhitbundit, I don't think it ever got to more than 60 or 70 cm, so it stayed outside of the buildings. It's amazing to me how with a short distance how drastic the water levels change. And yes, it does seem counterproductive to flood people's homes when there is a canal nearby.

  4. Hi

I am stuck in Issan because my house got over a metre of water on Chinnaket near Ngam Wong Wan. I would really like to get back home now as im bored as hell here and want to get back to work. Does anyone know if they have pumped chinnaket dry yet?

My staff sent me a picture of Chinnakhet 1 in front our offcie from yesterday. Water is down to 15 cm. Our location is closer to the back entrance of Garden City Lagoon, near the intersection with the 7-11 and the market. Couple of weeks ago our section was around 60 cm.

An update....sorry to disappoint, but when I actually talked to the staff member today, something got lost in the translation in email. It's not 15 cm. He indicated calf to knee deep in the street, which I guess meant about 15 cm overlapping the sidewalk area. He thought it might be a couple more weeks before it's dried out. Still only passable for big trucks. He thought it would be unsafe for my Ford 4WD still.

  6. Update for Soi Chinnakeht 1. My staff reports that as of Friday, the water is at 55cm and it's been rising 1-2 cm. It is now impassable for motorcycles and cars.Photo is from Thursday. This area is in Tung Hong Song, Laksi, area east of Klong Prapa and west of Klong Prem Prachakorn.

GM Link Aside: Difficult to spot the klongs amongst the housing, universities, golf courses, driving ranges, housing, sports clubs, etc ...

Hmm...I thought we were Tung Hong Song based on the mailing address, but actually based on your map, this is incorrect. This part of Chinnakhet is slightly southwest of the area demarcated as Tung Hong Song as it's slightly south east of Durkhitpundit University and west of the golf driving range. I think what is labled on the map as Tung Hong Song is where the goverment complex is.

  8. So far the Central Ladprao area is still dry but my colleagues told me it is coming closer day by day.

Just got an SMS from a friend, The water is approaching Rachadapisek and Chevron who has offices at SCB Plaza (near the Elephant building) are sending their employees home.

  9. Can someone give me an update on Nonthaburi please, my gf lives on 6 Soi Tansamrit 14, Tiwanon road. She says she is ok, but I think she is being generous as I have current health issues and she does not wish to put me under any more stress. Had to cancel my flight in November due to these issues.

    Would really appreciate the feedback.

Parts of Nonthaburi are under water, especially the west side of the Chaophrya. However, a good chunk of Pakkred is still dry. Tiwanond is on the east side of the Chaophrya. Not sure where soi 14 is, but it's possible it's just a minimum of flooding depending on how close to the river she is. I am further east behind Central Plaza Chaengwattana and it is bone dry. However, go a few more kilometers past Klong Prapa and the reports are the road is closed.

That's good news. Say can you tell me if it's possible to get from Muang Thong Thani, going along Changwattana, turning left up onto Tiwanon, then going to Rattanatibet road? Is that stretch dry?

You should still be able to enter Muang Thong from the Chaengwattana entrances as the Pakkred side of CW is still dry.

  10. Report from my travels this morning, using Bus 63 from Pantip Ngamwongwan to TMB Bank via Phahonyothin.

Again Phongphet and Chinnakhet areas well flooded, a little bit of water further up outside Khlong Prem Prison. Over the bridge to Kasetsart, on the other side it is flooded quite badly but only on one side of the road, the side where Kaset is. At the junction to turn into Phahonyothin Road in the direction of Major Rachayothin there is some water, down to Soi 36 but no further at the moment.

How high do you estimate the water levels were at Chinnakhet...to the sidewalk or higher? Already shut my factory down for the week because the staff sent pics that water was sidewalk height level yesterday. They sandbagged before they closed up shop last Thursday, just wanting to be sure it's high enough. Need to determine if it will dry out by next Monday as well. Thanks.

Just received pics from my staff...yes even with the office closed...gotta love them. This area of Chinnakhet is sort of in the area behind Garden City Lagoon which fronts on Prachachuen, near the market.

  13. I'm trying the pommelo addition and most of the stuff you are on Bill. I think its the way to go - but with exercise. As everyone says over! and over! eat less exercise more, and no fat or sugar

Just read this and remembered this thread from awhile ago. Perhaps this is why pomelo works well for weight loss.

    "A Critical Compound

People in a study who had low blood concentrations of vitamin C and walked on a treadmill for an hour burned 25 percent less fat than people with adequate C. But a dose of C brought fat-burning levels back up to par. Why? Seems C is essential for creating carnitine, a substance that turns fat into fuel."

  14. The small bottle are Healthy Mate brand, a Thai company. Some of their spreads have honey. They also do an almond butter and organic apple cider vinegar. However none of their products are cheap. Also available at Lemon Farm supermarkets.

  15. In Bangkok, you will occasionally run into street vendors who are squeezing fresh pomegranate juice. Usually 50 baht per small bottle I think.

yeah its a good question about Pomegranate juice... I would stay away from the packaged stuff because they pasteurize it so it lasts longer and also cut it with other sugary juices to increase the profits. The heating process damages the properties of the juice.

If you go to markets you can get the fruits yourself. There is a trick to peel it where you cut into sections and soak and fairly easy separate the seeds. Can find video's on youtube... it simple once you learn how.

From there could do a few things

--Just eat them. nice addition to a salad etc.

-- put them in a blender and drink them in a smoothie etc

-- put them in a blender and then squeeze the juice out thru a cheese cloth... You basically wrap it up in a ball and strangle it and collect the juice..

-- if you have a juicer can juice it also

Any of those methods will get the full antioxidant value.. Very good for anti inflammation.

Check Makro because they often have really good prices on them. They are in season now also.

  16. My daughter who will be 24 this September returned to Thailand after graduating from university in the US. We moved here when she was 8 and she graduated from ISB. She returned to the US for college, then returned to pursue business opportunities. She is currently training as a professional dancer. Surprisingly, many of her friends have also returned to Thailand to work after graduating from university elsewhere.

  17. There is a Thai company that produces a rice protein powder but it's no longer labeled that way. I've seen it at Lemon Farm and it may be at the Mail grocery stores. Comes in a small cannister and around 600 baht. Not in BKK at the moment, so I can't check, but I think it's labeled as a rice cereal drink now. When they first started producing it, it was labeled as rice protein. Suspect it was relabeled for marketing purposes.

  18. It all depends on what you choose to eat. I find Thai yums & stir fries fairly healthy and control the amount of rice consumed with it. Yums are full of fresh vegetables with a bit of protein, so one of my favorites. Stir fried rice and noodles fall into the fattening end of the spectrum, including pad Thai so something to eat only occassionally if you are concerned about healthy.

  19. Desperate for a chips and salsa fix, I decided to try my chances with the locally made Butcher's Choice Spicy Salsa Sauce, and apart from the silly and repetitive name, it was great!

I was extremely skeptical at first because TiT after all, so when I got home I poured only a small amount into and a bowl. I dug a Danita's corn chip in, shoved it into my mouth, half-expecting a violent urge to spit out again to follow, but much to my taste bud's pleasure, it was good! Really good!!! I wouldn't go so far as to grace this stuff with adjectives such as 'authentic' or 'awesome', but it was far, far beyond what I expected and I managed to devour half the bottle before slowing my ravenous pace.

The price was what sold me - 74B for 450grams at Foodland - a steal compared to the imported stuff(!!!), but I'm so pleased with this "find"! Butcher's Choice seem to offer two other varieties - Garlic and Standard - as well as other canned goods (why do we call still them 'canned' when they're in a jar?) for decent prices. Their dill pickles almost won my attention today, but I'm very glad I chose the salsa. I will give the pickles a go another day, but they are made with completely mature cuces, big seeds and all, so my hopes are quite low indeed for those as well.

Any one else care to comment on Butcher's Choice brand products?

PM me if the Butcher's Choice pickles don't suit your taste.

  20. Can you please mention some realistic examples. Things like 'high carbs', 'low carbs', 'high fiber' and 'protein' don't say me too much. What do you recommend to eat or not to eat, but then in a (for me) understandable format (i.e. apples, bread, potatoes etc).

    Keep it simple.

Protein means beef, pork, chicken, eggs, fish,, shrimp, crab, squid, etc. Preferably leaner cuts.

Fruits...apples, pears, watermelon, pineapple, etc. Even bananas. However, eat more of the juicer fruits. All fruits eaten whole will provide fiber. Avoid fruit juice. Make the fruit vendor your friend...he's done all the hard work.

Veggies...think leafy green or crunch. This is also fiber. Minimize the starchy ones like potatoes.

As previously stated, avoid white flour, sugar, & processed food, rice & noodles. This means no bread basket, no cake, no chips.

Initially, if you can, restrict your alcohol...it's extra calories you don't need. Once you get your metabolism cranking (this was the advice to build muscle) you can probably add it back in moderation.

If you eat Thai food & spicy, eat the different yams. Also the stir fries with meant & veggies.

And don't undereat. If your body thinks it's starving, it'll hold onto the fat. There are online calculators to help you figure out how many calories to eat for your target weight.

    Good luck...

  21. I purchased a yogurt maker at a show at Impact Exhibition for 800 baht. Very easy to use, it holds a one liter bottle or carton, just add some yogurt as a starter then plug it in. Yogurt quality does vary a bit, but much cheaper than 7-11, etc. I've seen it at the Lemon Farm stores in BKK. I usually drain the yogurt to get a creamier consistency.

  22. The slicers at Verasu are definitely for home use only. I bought the one without the safety to slice biscotti type cookie loaves. After about 6 small loaves, the motor gets hot and I have to wait at least 30 minutes while it cools. I saw the commercial machines demonstrated at ThaiFex last June/July at Impact Exhibition Center. The good ones sliced through frozen meant like a hot knife through butter, the real thin slices for the restaurants. I just checked, the next show is May 12-16, 2010. They had lots of commercial equipment including the bread slicers. Think you can register online.
