  1. Why a mini bus ? Do you need to hire the complete bus ?

If you must go by land, and money is tight you might consider the VIP bus services. Typically one stop.

Price is under 1000B each, and includes (some) food (depending on the bus company). If you choose well you might even get your own personal entertainment screen.

  2. You did not provide any details of the modem.

If it is a DLINK, read the very last few pages of the (later) manuals. They consider it quite acceptable to have to power cycle the unit everyday. This does not usually apply to other brands, unless they get to a 'hung', which may require some manual intervention (but not every day).

  3. I dont think its 5Hzs.

I am looking to install an lap timer app on my phone.... most apps specific "support for External 5/10hz GPS receivers"...

    maybe 5-10Ghzs

GPS operate in the 1.5GHz space

The 5Hz is probably the data update rate from the GPS to the attached device. The usual stanard is 1Hz. The required update rate will depend on a lot of things, including the chip set in the GPS.

The real difference is how far can you travel in 1 second or 0.2 second - in a car or on foot not very far

  4. I am looking for a parts manufacturer in greater BKK area (inc Chon Burri area - out to about 150km) to manufacture laser cut components and tubular mild / stainless steel welding (dump pipe to be specific)

Quality, consistancy, reliability, and price is important. Samples must be generated in 7 days of presenting the prototypes. Order quantity will depend on pricing (but over 20 units)

Somebody did suggest a location someplace between Bang Na and the City, but I can find any reference in the forum or email.

    Thanks

  5. Not a lot of flights start / end at Avalon - not even many AU cities

You are either into Sydney and transfer via domestic, or into Tullamarine and take a road trip

Maybe the rellies can hire a Van for the trip to/ from Melb - might be cheaper and easier than transitting in Sydney

  6. Stayed at the M Hotel (near the eastgate). The tarrif was a bit under what you quoted, but the room was modern & clean. The hallway had a smell, but it could have been the carpet cleaning. I'll be staying here again unless I get a better offer find a more attractive price / facilities.

Right next to the Sunday night market, so you can just walk to / from as you desire. A few srinking spots a little further south.

Breakfast was OK, but I prefered just down the road where you can get an English breakfast for 100B - it was TOP quality (and they speak english too).

  7. Stayed the Top Northern a couple of times. Found it average (although the staff can usually comprehend english)

Also stayed Montri (Hotel M now ???) - great hotel, but not sure about the pool (if there is one). Not sure if they have smoking area (I'm not a smoker any more so did not even ask) Cost was under 900B (low season) plus breakfast.

There are couple of other hotels that will remain nameless as there quality was less than ZERO - one has a HUGE parking lot - if you see it you will be looking at a hotel with 1960's interior finish and styling, broken lift and over priced, plus its a distnace from the main attractions.

There is a great spot for breakfast just north of the Top North Hotel entry - was 100B for a full english breaky. Not only was it cheap, the food was GREAT, and the service fantastic. Unfortunately I found it on the second last day

If you walk a little further south ( 170 metres) in the evening you will come to Johns Place on the corner. Its OK for a drink - reasonable view from upstairs, and pool tables too.

The above based purely on experience

  8. Ignore the wisearse with the magnet.
    55555

Be fair I did have second thoughts about that. But magnetic fields must be changing and you would get tired waving the magnet about.

Place on a decent speaker and turn up the sound for a few hours - meat laof at full boar (pun intended) is a good selection

Seriously, is the platter spinning ?

you want to buy the another of the same unit and swap electronics board and give a try

  9. What you have to understand is that:

    Thais have a different religion

    Thais have a different alphabet

Thais have a different way of thinking about life

Thais have never been colonised by any Western country so that the assumptions that you make as a Westerner are irrelevant here

    Thais are not European!

As you've been told more than once Thailand isn't Europe. If you arrive in Thailand expecting the same orderly, organised life that you live in the Netherlands you are going to be MIGHTY disappointed. You're also going to miss all the fun that Thailand has to offer. On your way over you ought to keep the words 'surreal' and 'bizarre' at the front of your mind. That way you'll be prepared.

Start with this in mind - It will make a completely different outlook on your trip. What is normal in the 'west' is usually irrelevant, inverted, or non existant

When come to realise above and fit with the local way of life you will love it

  10. Without getting into a brand bashing excercise - there is a signicamt different between the firewall tiers. Based on the price and models mention I conclude you are interested in lowest price

Note that firewalls stop traffic, NOT content (that may be malicious). By default 99.99% firewalls permit outbound traffic only. For any malware to get on your PC it is either a direct result of attaching compromised storage, or download from the intenet or WIFI. This appears to be the issue you are experiencing

If your computer is being remote controlled it is unlikely to be the firewall causing the issue, as most (consumer grade) firewalls dont have a provision to get command line access or run other programs that would permit such activities 9or launch of such activities from the firewall itself)

It is more probable that your computer(s) have been compromised by download of some type (either deliberate or 'drive by' web download). Check your computer(s) using several different AV / root kit detection programs.

If you want a firewall that does content inspection you will need to add some zero to the price you quoted. Even if a product comes with builtin content filtering, it will be of dimimished value a month after it is released due to new malware releases. The signatures need to be updated atleast every week, and preferably every day. This will require a subscription to be maintained (read pay more $ every year). Now you are starting to move into the low end commercial grade products, and you will need more that just adding a 0 to the price. Start with decent AV/Malware program suite (there are a few decent inexpensive ones on the market - not I did not say synemtec).

The biggest issue with any 'firewall' is the configuration. Get the device manual if you are not familar with that device.

    Firewall co0nfiguration policy;

No. 1 rule is to change all of the adminstrative access settings.

No. 2 rule is deny all admin access from any place but the LAN (physical cabled side) - this includes wireless

No. 3 rule is deny all traffic from any place but the LAN

NOW consider what traffic is required.

    IF you NEED wireless, then set the wireless paramaters such as;

    a. WPA2-PSK - do not even think about WEP - you might as well adverise the password on your door! (IF there is choice of enterprise or personal choose personal for home use

    b. AES encryption

    c. generate a long random preshared secret - about 16 characters (or more) of mixed alpha/numeric/punctuation is best

A brief discussion on firewall trends (although I do not agree 100% with the band related statements - but you will notice that no SOHO brands get a mention)

    Network World post on firewalls

    Hope that helps.

  11. I had acceptable internet using True in north Pattaya last month.

Was located ground floor between beach road and 1st road, about 250m from the Tiffany Theatre / Shooting Range.

My dongle supported all 5 GSM bands (True use 850Mhz as mentioned previously).

PS one of the staff at the True store in the Tesco Lotus complex speaks some english, but dont sell NetSim - best to pick up one in BKK

  12. IF you are the seller (not via Ebay - the closely integrated sister company) you have NO rights apart from objecting if the other party lodges any claims (read the fine print VERY closely). Only those selling via Ebay to a Premier buyer stands a chance in the case of a dispute. This even contravenes the Trade Practices Act.

As a buyer you have more luck, if you are prepared to jump through all of their hoops chasing stuff well hidden on their website and spend a lot of time on the phone (usually on hold).

In short, when it works it is nice. When there is a problem - its YOUR problem. They have little or no interest in addressing the matter without a lot of coercion.

If an act of fraud has been committed, expect no co-operation without taking it through legal channels.

  13. No Thanks. Worked in HKG for years and had my fill of Filipino english, and Nanny's-kids ended up worse off in my opinion.

Malaysian on the other hand may be a better sell.

There is a HUGE difference, one will speak English, and the other will speak American - same applies for spelling.

Other than that immigration is likely easier for Malaysian.

    Either can be great nanny.

  14. I very successfully used the Telstra 3G USB dongle (instead of buy their 2000tb dongle). Mine was the ZTE MF662 model.

Good 3G coverage most places I have been.

The only issue I had was at recharge time :-( Anybody can take your money - I guess that is all that 711 can be really be expected to do

Getting any sort of support can be an issue - even when accompanied by a thai speaker.

Most staff at True try, but my lack of thai was a challenge. I must say thanks to a couple of the girls at Bang Kapi mall True outlet for their efforts - dam_n I even made it worth their while (and I'm a tight *ss!)

Dont rely on the 1331number or internet as its usually busy.

  15. Thanks guys.

Its a mechanically sound and reliable vehicle capable of doing a little exploring I'm looking for. I've driven the mighty Suzuki before so I know what I am in for relating to power (although its a LONG way from the 380HP and 580NM I'm used to for 4x4 use).

Any other of the jap (preferably tubo diesel) 4x4 would OK if fitted with said tyres.

  16. From my understanding of the problem, you need to get a reliable signal into the 9 story building, which is also 20M wide, but can only set the AP back 8M from the building.

In order to get a reliable signal over that distance, through a window (possibly tinted), you will need either gain antenna or 'signal booster' / amplifier

The other issue you face is to getting coverage for 9 stories from one antenna - some of the signal will be directed to the ceiling unless you can elevate the AP to the same height as the windows (on each story of the target building)

I suspect you will need multipl AP's (MIMO type) with gain antenna, plus some means to elevate some AP's, or look at a method installing the AP in the building.

  17. Does anybody have any tips on finding some off road 4x4 activities in Chiang Mai area - perhaps including Pai ( 1- 2 days)

Expecting to get dirty / muddy - so really 4x4 not just gravel roads.

Last time I did see a few radical 4x4 on one of the major roads heading east towards Doi Inthanon - does anybody know this place or contact info?

    Thanks

  18. I am looking for hotel under 1000BT near the Sunday market - there is a place very close that is set back from the road. Its about 15 years old as I could last tell, but i cant find the name again.

Expect A/C and wifi, pool would be worth a few hundred bhat extra

I did read the pinned list, but it is a little dated and I did not recognise the name (reciept was in Thai anyway)

    Thanks Guys

  19. I am looking for hotel approx 1000BT close to rail service in BKK.

My line of thinking was from Bang Kapi towards the city centre or Don Muang Airport towards the city.

Expect A/C and wifi, pool would be worth a few hundred bhat extra

I did read the pinned list, but it is a little dated, and I dont know most of the area's

    Thanks Guys
