1. What area are you in? If in the greater BKK area I can put you in touch with a lovely group, but will help if you know a little Thai language.

Not so much a school, but social gathering with focus on some dance.

2. I have used Kinnaree Resort a few times - no pool but right on the beach. Its about 10 mins from Big Buddha, and nicely out of the congestion of Chewang. The can even do a reasonable english/american breakfast

Its not a honeymoon destination, but cheap, clean and comfortable (even WIFI included in my rate). Limited bar, but i'm there for the relaxation. Located 73/2 Moo 4 Bophut, Koh Samui I'll be using them next time

3. May have found the answer! Went to see wifes A/c friend. Appears that Toyota didn't fit A/c filter until about 2008. Thus all the dust is sucked into evaporator matrix, eventually causing "mud" to block both the matrix and drain tube. Complete removal of dashboard is required. I was there when it was done, quite a job, drained about a quart of water from the housing, matrix washed off with pressure hose. Wondered what the sloshing sound was on making left turns! Total cost 1800bht. Engineer recommended only using recirculating mode on A/C to minimize problem. This on a '05 vigo with only 60,000km on the clock. The joys of living in Issan I guess

after ensuring the drain is pointing DOWN, clear it with something via the drain itself - specially if there has been dust accumulateed (now mixed moisture)

quick & easy to do (if you can get under the car)

4. I have used D Link routers (both wired and wireless) for a number of years in a few houses that I manage. They have proved to be both reliable and efficent. Most problems come from the telephone cable or TOT

I would happily buy them again
I'm glad somebody likes their 'stuff' - I've other more descriptive words that I will refrain from using.

Their support policy is some place below sea level and reliability mtaches - 3 units (2 different models) in 9 months - all unreliable.

Replaced with Linksys & Netgear - work a treat

5. The disadvantages of owning a 4x4 as to owning a 4x2 car or ute are (some generalisation here, but should be considered)

1. Higher fuel consumption
2. having to often replace 4 tyres at once in stead of rotating Tryes and replacing two tyres at a time
3. higher cost of tyres
4. Not as safe at higher highway speeds because of higher centre of gravity ( unless you are travelling in 4 wheel drive or all wheel drive)
5. Higher risk of spinal injury in an accident because of higher chance of roll over
6. A lot more road noise due to off road tyres, both inside the cabin and those who live near to the road
7. Rougher/stiffer ride
8. More difficult to parallel park, / reverse park because of less rear vision
9. More chance of killing other people in smaller cars in a collision .

These are all reasons i tried to convince my mother in law why not to get a Fortuner but being Hi-So and being able to impress the neighbours triumphed over everything . Now most of the time it remains in the garage because it is too difficult to drive to Big C .

With some perspective;

1. if fuel cost is the issue - many modern turbo diesel engines are nearly the same as a car , particulalry if you carry any goods / equipment
2. 4wd uses only the (typically) rear wheels for drive under normal usage - tyres can be rotated normally - AWD have less tyre wear PER tyre, but need replace 4 at one time (read BIG hit on tyre costs at one time)
3. same tyre cost as a hi performance car
4. better visibility allows you to read the road ahead better (well maybe in some places)
5. i think U will find its not legal to swerve and cause an accident - unlikley to fall over on the highway at the legal limits
6. nothing the CD player cant solve - same noise from truck tyres on the highway
7. with correct suspension the ride is as good or better than many sedans
8. use the mirrors - thats what they are for - really few people can reverse park properly (specially in TH) so this lmost mute point
9. more chance of survival - avoid collision!

The otherside of the picture;

• few people actually know how to engage 4wd - why do they NEED a 4wd ???
• driver ability, tyres, clearance has a LOT to do with off road capability
• a 2wd suits 99.9% of the people 99% of the time

Why a 4WD is NEEDED - simply show / status symbol. Back in my home town 10% of the local cars are 4WD - but then they are actually USED off road on the farms - different environments different reasons

As you can guess I DO have a 4wd, but its has done over 40K km of OFF ROAD usage - this his 10x more than many will do in a lifetime. I go (or try) offroad as often as work & family permit. For this you need to get way from the cities (and another reason for boys weekend).

6. I am looking for a parts manufacturer in greater BKK area (inc Chon Burri area - out to about 150km) to manufacture laser cut components and tubular mild / stainless steel welding.

Quality, consistancy, reliability, and price is important. Samples must be generated in 7 days of presenting the prototypes. Order quantity will depend on pricing.

Thanks

DaveO

7. All depends on what the goal is.

VHT paint does a fine job, but will need touch up from time to time from tool (spanner) marks if you are not careful.

Proper double chroming works wonders. Will even hide the rust until falls apart from corrosion.

Since the headers are used there will normally be an additional fee to clean them before they get treated (even if ceramic coated).

Never had call for chrome of high temp paint anything in LOS yet. My contacts tell me that they have ceramic work done outside of the country (maybe to get the right quality for thier products).

8. I would say that generally the D-Link routers that the ISP's sell along with their packages are the worst of the worst, they are dirt cheap and still heavily overpriced when buying through the ISP. Invest in a proper router, money well spent.

I post rarely on here, even as a response, so this will be brief and to the point.

DLINK product is unreliable. Personally every modem/router I have had from them has failed at random times. Their support is close to the bottom of the barrel. As an IT reseller / consultant I've seen more failures on their domestic products than all the others put together. Their product has cost me plenty lost consultancy, so dont expect an endorsement of that brand. The other response is correct the Telco provides them for a reason - they are CHEAP - in every sense

However it sounds like the telco has not provisioned the service correctly. If you have a chance borrow from somebody else a modem/router to confirm it is either a telco or product issue.

Best of luck with both the telco and the 'product'

9. hi all

My hilux 2.5 D-4D engine does not built in with intercooler system. Anyone can provide me some solutions on how to to upgrade my engine to the intercooler system. Thanks.

Just fiting the intecooler wont amount to much - you need to change the fuelling and improve the efficiency.

Easy option is a free flowing exhaust system (including the dump pipe) and a performance tuning module.

I used the ones from ENG-TEK on my 2000 model Hilux (1KZ-TE turbo diesel) and Toyota D4D pickup for a significant improvement.

10. Hello Intj,

I found this topic :D:D:D on the net, because I'm concidering a same kind of project. I like the Navara sport truck, but I miss the V8 power. The LS 400 engine is a nice option. Do you know if it's possible that I use my stock 6-speed gearbox? If yes, do you know how much power it can bear? It was developed for a diesel, so it might handle lots of torque.

There are people around me, who tell me that I better buy a BT50.

Regards,

John :)

The V8 (even aluminium) will add some weight to the front of the vehicle.

Dellow, and Marks Adpators make a range of engine to gearbox adaptors.

Since you did not identify the model Navara I can not be any more help.

12. hi guys,

I'm in the market for a netbook.

Been looking at Acer Aspire or a Dell Inspiron Mini10.

I am leaning towards the Dell @ $649 AUD V's $799 AUD for the Acer.

Any comments on both of these???

Would u buy in Australia or should i wait till i get to LOS where I will spending the next few months or so??

The Dell and Acer both come with WindowsXP but the Dell comes with a McAfee security system for a 30 day trial.

Any comments on McAfee???

I will be using the netbook for banking, email, facebook, blogging, poker, surfing.

I am no tech-head so any help is appreciated...

Thanks guys, Clarkey.

Based on experience with a fleet of Dell products I would be steering away from that brand. Have you considered the ASUS PC1000 range, or the MSI. There is a review of these two excellent products.

pricing in AUS seemstobe as good or better than I have found in Thailand (from any reputable outlet I considered).

oh - I am a tech head :-)

13. ? BUYING ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT ?

If you are, my experiences with Hewlett Packard will help.

I bought a new HP Pavilion with me to Thailand two years ago. After 12 months, it needed a new keyboard. I took it to HP Service center in Chiang Mai. They promised to have it done in 5 days. It was ready after 2 weeks. I took it home and discovered all the leetters were in the wrong places and it typed different ones to the keys I hit. Back to HP Service center. They said that they couldn't get the right one (despite the part number being on the back), so fitted a local one !! I complained to HP USA. I got a phone call and email and was told that they would get me one. Nearly 3 months later, it arrived and was fitted, I had to pay again and no refund for the incorrect one. They got their own back on me because 3 months later, the computer stopped working completely. I went to a local repair shop. They told me that it needed a new chip which they could not do because they didn't have small enough soldering equipment. Back to the dreaded HP Service. They said quote would be ready in 5 days. Nearly 5 weeks later, I got it. 45,000 Baht !! New computer is 38,000 Baht !! So I told them to stick it. I stupidly bought a new HP Pavilion in May this year. Pavilion because I was familiar with it. I unpacked it 3 weeks later. Very good, but after 2 weeks and about 3 hours of use, it took control and typed any letters it felt like, and some of them hundreds of times, completely random. Back to the shop, they told me to take it to HP Service center, OH NO, not again ! I did. They told me it would be ready in 5 days (the magic number). After 3 weeks, I lost patience and sent a fax to CEO, HP in USA. I got no reply, but I did get an email from HP, Bangkok. Eventually, they agreed to give me a replacement. Sent me a document to take to ZOOM Technologies (where I bought it) to collect the replacemrnt (happy now). Sorry, can't replace it, out of manufacture ! So HP Bangkok told me to go back to ZOOM, as he had authorised them to give me a better model for 2,500 Baht extra (happy again). ZOOM said 'NO CHANCE' you get no new computer here. If you bring everything, including the original box here we will refund money. So, next day I took it all back, for refund. When I asked for it, they said 'NO CHANCE'. But you promised a refund said I. But we didn't say when, did we ? We will send it back to distributor and IF they give us SOME refund, we will give you SOME. That was 3 weeks ago. Now HP Bangkok are ignoring my emails !!!

BE WARNED.

As a consultat in the IT industry I would be avoiding the models designed for home use! Generally they are not what I would consider fit for purpose - possible exception is ASUS (which I do not personally use).

There are some brands that I would never consider, in particular the cheaper brand originally owned by Michael Dell. Unreliable and incompentent service / repair capability. Not just once, but on every single until we purchased. This is one brand I would advise stay WELL clear of. They are cheap, for a reason.

These days many of the no name brands can be assembled from quality products, if you choose carefully you end up with a reliable system at reasonable price.

Sorry I can assist with a solution, but it would be interesting to know the location this 'dealer'.

14. Anybody please :)

Not strictly correct.

We use multiple IP addresses on some of our machines with success (on each NIC card). However it is normal for each interface to have a seperate IP address, usually in a different IP addr range

However I assume you are referring to the an ISP assigned IP address, and a local IP (perhaps from your LAN interface).

IF you intend to share the internet with multiple PC I wluld suggest that you get an appropriate firewall/router. From experience I would stay away from DLINK (nothing but trouble and sub standard support in even english speaking countries). Billion or Linksys have a better reputation. The setup will depend upon your specific needs, but most are close to plug and play out of the box.

15. Can anybody provide some leads on 4x4 self drive tours near BKK (near means within 4 hr drive)?

What we are looking for is serious off road tour were the fully equipped car (hilux / virago / jeep / landrover / MAYBE Suzuki) is provided as part of the arrangement. Fully equipped means MT tyres, winch, recovery equipment & possibly diff locks. IE serious fun stuff. We are experienced off roaders with reasonably capable machines of our in in Oz ,and dont want to spend time sitting in a car travelling just dirty tracks.

There USED to be a company near Kanachanburi that operated through the national park under licence (cost fully catered and escorted was US$660 each for about 10 days - shorter options avail too). Cant find them on the internet anymore, and TAT are unresponsive :)

Alternatively we would be interested in a local 4x4 club that was doing something like this in Oct/Nov. Unfortunately we only speak english.

We have sourced an expereinced english speaking guide for all the touristy type locations.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

DaveO

16. there are a couple of reasons why you service might be banned;

A. the whole range is blocked because it is a DIALUP range (even if it is ADSL or cable - particularly if it is NOT a business grade service)

B. there has been a complaint raised against your IP address block (maybe NOT your address but one in the block)

C. there has been a complaint raised against your specific IP address

Your need determine which of these is the case.

If it is C. then restrict outbound email to the address of your email server ONLY, and optionally run some email anti-spam platform on outbound (& inbound) email. The CBL administration will likely want some sort of guarrantee that the issue has been resolved before releasing the IP address from the list. This may involve a statment from an external IT / security support company

If B then you will need to address this with your ISP

If A then you will need to get a non DIALUP IP address from your ISP

17. here in Switerland we could have this effect, due of our climate.

You know, if the temperature is cold you get less petrol/gasoline/ulead fuel

..but if hte temperature is hot..you get more fuel (chemical effect)....

..but I assume it's not your case...hehe...

You got this backwards eh?

Chemical effect? Heated liquid expands, takes up a bigger volume of space therefore you get less for your litre in a hot climate. The only liquid that expands as it cools is water & that's only at freezing point :)

Double this... You think the fuel companies are stupid enough to ignore this effect?

The pumps are supposed to compensate for temperature variations in the dispensed fuel. Also keep in mind that the fuel in the below ground is usually a lot cooler than the air temp during the daytime.

18. I have to give kudos to the Pattaya BiB on this one, when it could have been so simple to make a report and call it a night.

This begs the question of how remarkably stupid a person could be to not be able to keep a story straight about a mugging.

As remarkably stupid as that is, it doesn't come anywhere near the incredible stupidity of the guy who sent her the money.

perhaps he thought he loved her (or wanted a longer term visa)

I guess that is over now
