  1. There was only a short period of public trial runs so far. The full test run, open to the public, is scheduled to start on December 5. The official opening is now set for April 2010. Cost for a ticket will be 150 Baht for a single journey between airport and city terminal.

Not sure if im becoming tight-fisted in my old-age (probably am), but 150bt seems quite expensive considering the general cost of public transport and taxis around town.

Remember airport bus from DM?It was 100B,so 150B on new rail link doesnt seem to much.Similar train in HK cost also 100,but HK$ which is 5 times more!

In KL it costs about 350B;in Singapore - may be 40B only(it is regular MRT not airport train)

Could I ask here,on the same shot - how much is normal taxi fare(meter) from new airport to Morchit bus station? Thanks for any advice,I hate to be

    overcharged.

  2. I found that if you want to be hasseled going into the US pay for your ticket with cash. That really upsets them and they go through everything. :)

This has and will never happen. USA is not on my list of recommendable countries. :D

This is music to the ears of many Americans who would like to see more secure borders. Tell your friends to stay away too!

TopTuan you are truly SpeedyGonzales - 2 years lag??What have you been doing so long?Composing these 2 sentences...?

  3. Hi Fantuzi thanks for the advice.. bizzaly enough iv tried 2 diferent usb wifi adaptors and neither pick up the signal but iv had 2 laptops before and they have both picked up the signal so i guess laptop wifi adaptors seem to be better!

    Try SENAO NUB362

it is also sold as EnGenius.I had best reception on laptop SonyVaio, maybe because of its big display(17inch)

and bigger anthenas?the worst was on TwinHead laptop.

    You must use long cable!

  4. Hi im buying a laptop at the weend and the onyl connection i have is a weak Truewifi connection that is on the road somewhere..

Can people give me examples of their laptop and how good the wifi card is in terms of signal from the actual router then i will be able to buy the best laptop based on that..

    Cheers

    Bkk

You are right, there are different radios in laptops. But! - more important factor is the location of the anthena.

You can spend a bit more money for external USB WiFi adapter with detachable anthena. You can move it around your

room and find the best hot spot, which is most likely - outside your window. The difference - is dramatic, cost?

not much:the best will cost you 2000B,cheap USBdongle - 200B?

  5. "I just want the punishment to fit the crime."

Don't whine mate, just thank your lucky stars you're a UK citizen.

If you were from Nigeria or Nepal you would certainly be a lot worse off, 20 + years worse off !

Maigo6 you are long timer here, but you do not read about local life. You do not know much about life of Nigerians in LOS.

There are so many of them in LOS slammers, that they had to open embassy here,it was the main reason.

And - listen, listen - every few years they have air shuttle, which takes all of them to motherland - in one go.

I think, there were already three such charters. What happens to them after? What do you think?I give you

chance to win a beer,if you guess. One Singha only, because it is easy guess.

You can claim it from any Nigerian, they will buy you..

I have just replied about the same in another thread:

Find branch of Bangkok Bank in London. They have branches overseas, they have here, where I am staying.

For small amount it is not the cheapest, but here it is instant,if the receiver have account with them in LOS.

Just send telegraphic transfer from BangkokBranch in London.May be you can find other Thai banks there?

  7. So, this question for anyone who has used moneybookers.

and I know I could do western union, however it's expensive

    Thanks

The best advice - from me,you will have to buy me lunch,if we meet.It is very simple.

BangkokBank is big bank with branches overseas. They have branch, here, where I stay.

When I send T/T - it is instantly transfered, but it doesnt work the same way in another country,

it may take longer,as usual T/T(telegraphic transfer) -one day,two days.

So,find Bangkok Bank branch in London and send T/T(wire transfer, cable transfer).Cost?notmuch, exchange rate?

    - nominal published bank T/T rate.

  8. Notice to all foreigners planning a Thailand Holiday.

    Why take chances. Protect yourself...

come to Chiang Mai...... not a jet ski in sight...

    :)

Khun Gonzo - you are naive idealist...Friend of mine used to run car/motorbike rent shop in ChiangMai

long time ago.The same scam was going on then - with motorbikes.

  9. Get the bus from Phuket Town my friend he do the same last week it leaves at 8pm and arrive early morning at Sungai Kolok (thai-Malay border) from there you just get a taxi, I did myself a long time ago but I drive and stayed overnight in Sungai Kolok

Do not be such a sissy.Do it yourself.Get to Hatyai. From there you have 2 morning trains from Bangkok(1st around 5-6am,2nd 7.30am - often -late) to SongoiGolok, short ride by motocycle taxi and short walk to Malysia, then bus or taxi to KotaBahru.Be nice to Thai Immo officers. In Hatyai you have plenty of easy accomodation and very interesting night life - just in front of

    the station.

Moneychangers - I would not recommend the street moneychangers. I am convinced that I lost 1 million Rupiah but I have no idea how I was scammed.

I know how - rigged calculator and sweet innocent girl who did it;this is special Bali scam. You tend to trust digital?dont in Bali!

  11. If you do not want to cry - do not buy anything in shops on so called GoldenMile(beginning of Nathan Rd in TST).

Do not even enter shops there, mere window shopping can be the beginning of "incident".

You can buy everything electronics in Broadway and Fortress shops in MongKok,prices are displayed, you can try to bargain, often - succesfully! They have many items, which are exclusive - nobody else have them.I think Broadway is better.

You will find three their shops in radius of 100mtrs,right next to subway and very near to LadiesMarket. This is safe option for you.

Computer stuff - look for it in MongKok Comp.Cntr;do not go to Wanchai Comp.Cntr - much more expensive(they have even touts from UK

on payrolls!).After you are done - you can proceed to Langham Place for real shopping with your lady. You may also stay in Langham Hotel.

Langham Place in Mongkok is world class shopping mall, worth look - very interesting design.

Trip to Shenzen is very easy,if you want to buy electronics "made in China" - what you see there - is overhelming!

you can get your mini-iphone there for 50$,somebody on this forum paid - 9000B in LOS for the same.(in Robinson!)

There is also night market on Temple Street - very good for souvenirs. One stop from MongKok.

  12. you don't need full hd on a 32" screen.

you will have to sit 50 cm from the tv to see the difference between full hd and hd ready.

so, save some money and get a 32" hd ready tv.

    Do not save,buy FullHD;today they make 16inches notebooks with FullHD,regular monitors - 20,22,24 - all FullHD,

if you buy "HDReady" - only if its very cheap because it is old model, which they offer in backwaters like LOS only.

  13. Thanks a lot visarunner !

While in Satun - it is more logic in going to Malaysia by ferry to Langkawi;ferry goes three times a day,the last - 4 or 5 pm.

It costs very little, takes little bit more then one hour and it is sort of fun, bigger then local bus,you want to take?

The ferry pier itself might be of more interest to you - it is called Tammalang Pier and it is quite big Immigration Office.I am not sure

if you can cross land border in Satun,it might be for local traffic only. The big land crossing is called Padang Besar,it is Thailand to

Malaysia highway, very busy and everybody going to Penang goes there in something called in affectionate way - donkey bus,

which is in fact nice minibus system serving Hatyai-Penang route. Its fast and not expensive.

From Langkawi you will have to take another ferry to Penang(4-5 hours) - nice travel. You can take ferry one way, donkey bus - return.

It is off season now,but may be you can find fast boat connection from Phuket to Satun or to Pakbara.(not cheap)

  14. Reading the first thread again the OP was given advice on who to contact by a very experienced person on this website, which was immediately shot down by the OP.

So therefore as many threads as you want can be opened, but I think if your not going to take that advice then give up.

    Hear hear.

Given good advice earlier. The OP ignored that. Subsequent threads/postings are just getting boring now.

My small opinion - OP friend's situation is difficult, but not hopeless for simple reason - he was not refused entry!

If somebody is blacklisted,he is automatically stopped and send back(deported - in tech lingo).

  15. Hi,

Well, it all depends on how they feel on thte day. They can check for several things but most times they are just imputting your deails in to the computer, name, passport number, date of birth, country, etc.if you see themswipe it through the card reader they are simply imputting the information easier as it reads the magnetic strip on your passport and has the necessary info on it. If, on the other hand, you see them put the passport on the flat plate then they are also checking your passport isnt on the lost/stolen interpol database (there are literally '000's of reported lost/stolen passports and numbers on their database and any check through this will bring it up if its on there (hopefully not, eh!!).

there is no way that any country regardless of what anyone will try to tell you that they can check on anything other than the above details through a simple passport check, if they want to check further whether you have any international warrants out for you or anything similar then they would have to ask you to follow them to a side room and send off a physical request to either your home country (country of passport issue) or to interpol.

    Hope this helps,

    Falcon

I am quite sure - your information is not accurate. No ofence intented - I am just correcting information.

First - look in your passport, you will not find any magnetic strip, there is no magnetic strip - you mix up your passport with your ATM card or Visa.Passport scanner can read printed information in your document on the page where you see your photo.

There are many types of readers and some require swipe(they can not read photo),others work like document scanners - they might scan your photo.

I am sure, that they check their own black list automatically..At BKK airport they have separate terminals ,behind immo posts, where they have access to other lists. The last, but not least - you may noticed yourself photocameras;they are used to take souvenir shot of you,

which is digitized on fly and what happens later - I am not sure.Souvenir shot!

I am not any authority,I saw it myself or I remember reading it somewhere.I have read, that they want to use fingerprints as well.

  16. Gee I just saw this brief article in the Sydney Morning Herald, then looked up ThaiVisa to see if it's in the news here yet, and instead I see this article! This is what I just read at 4.15AM here:

August 11, 2009 - 6:59AM A huge 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit off the Andaman Islands in eastern India, triggering a tsunami alert across the Indian Ocean, the US Geological Survey reported Tuesday.

I hope some alerts can be made in Phuket in time.

Mustafa! You have skipped on the better part of the story in SydneyMorningHerald - about Thai Government:

"Thai Government is aware of this and "They are MONITORING the situation""

I think, they have special agent soaking his feet in sea water of PatongBeach.

  17. I am on my fourth mp3 player. Like the OP I listen to Audio books and my problem is if I stop listening in the middle of a book, it cannot remember where I left off so when I start again I have to 'fast forward' to the spot where I left off and that can be a very tedious process.

I have ditched three player into the old well out the back and am now looking at the fourth!!

    Colin

Try this one:Sansa Fuze 8G, or Sansa Clip;it is made by well known company - SanDisk - memory chip manufacturer.

Both models have the same sound system, which is fantastic - it is not only my opinion.Clip is more simple - for jogging.

The best about SansaFuse is good sound, but also - the price!just 100$!

And - what you get:light, slim, credit card size device with microSD slot,video,radioFM/voice record;which looks exactly like I-pod-nano 2nd gen.!

The interface wheel is turnable/click - very convenient in use.It can play new music vehicle - SanDisk's sloRadio cards and prerecorded microSD cards

How they are getting away with this i-pod-nano-look without being branded as i-pod clone?

If SteveJobs complains,SanDisk stops supplying him with memory chips?

If I lose my Sansa(it happens) - I will buy anotherone again.

And last but not least - NO SILLY I-TUNES!You can use Rhapsody to buy/download music,or drag-drop .

    So,it is i-pod nano,without i-tunes;it has however - "PAUSE" button!

I am using it with noise canceling earphones from Audio-Technica and they really work in train/bus or airplane,at last I can listen to music

    being in transport.

  18. To anybody, who wants to comment this story:

read new book on the market:

"Send Them To hel_l" by Sebestian Williams

Yes, because a recently released convict low on cash would have absolutely no reason to write a less than honest sensationalist tall tale about his time in prison abroad.

But,I think it is better, that they write books instead of robbing banks again?Last week I watched with interest on CNN

interview with certain Gregory David Roberts -exBombay gangster(he is white OZie), ex-convict many times, one time - jail runaway, writer of novel"Shantaram".Best girl from CNN - presented him in TalkAsia!

His novel is worldwide bestseller - movie in the making with Jonny Depp(who else??),another novel - coming soon;whats wrong about it?
