  1. The OP stated:

"I'm prepared to but a non commitment phone from Apple (699UDS) as I'm out of contract with A T & T."

By "non commitment" I am assuming that he is referring to an open-market or "unlocked" phone. That being the case, all he needs to do is buy a SIM here, plug it in, and go.

He should be able to go the route of getting the subsidized phone from AT&T with another two-year contract. If he is a long-time customer in good standing they might even unlock the phone for him.

I'm willing to pay the non -commitment price of $699 because I don't want a contract. And no I promise they will not unlock the phone. I guarantee that. and if anyone knows how to get them to do that please send me a PM. i did go to a great apple reseller www.lacomputercompany.com and talked with a tech there and he said there is a possibility of buying an unlocked iPhone from apple or A t & T but numerous calls to each has resulted in a "no" each time.

I'm not trying to break a law. I simply want to have a phone i would like and enjoy it.

I don't think that is asking for too much....

  2. Ok, I wasn't specific enough. It *is* legal to unlock your phone for the sole purpose of being able to connect with different networks. There was a special ruling about the DCRM to allow this. Jailbreaking your phone is something else; it's the process of making your phone capable of running aps that you did not buy from the Apple Ap or iTunes shops. Generally, because you still use Apple's bootware...oh, forget it, it gets too complex for me to write about it.

It appears to be a grey area on TV; and because of that, I'm not going to do anything to make life difficult for the owners and mods by telling people to do something illegal or pointing them to links for that purpose.

As far as further education goes, mind showing us the case law that says that Jailbreaking is legal? Ah, never mind. I'm sure I wouldn't be able to understand that, either.

    thanks for the update.

You had me seriously concerned about the anal retention factor of the forum rules.

I couldn't figure out how this forum could care about talking about an iPhone and the breaking or unlocking of it.

That would have been over the top IMHO.....

and while on the topic where is the tech forum on this page? I looked and didn't find. But my post did get moved.

I just want to have fun

  4. I'll be in Bkk for a week and then off to the PI for 3 weeks before returning to LOS and then making my way to Pattaya and possibly other cities and countries.

I definitely prefer a place that comes with WiFi in the room. A pool would be nice but isn't necessary. I don't know my way around BKK so I guess i can't even speculate about any area.

I do want a place that's clean and I also like having a refrigerator in the room.

Given these perimeters can you make any recommendation as to a possible hotel to stay in for a week. I'll be there the second week of September.

I'll be traveling for an unknown length of time so I use $50 as a price point figuring that runs to $1500 a month.

    thanks in advance.

  5. I drive in Bkk most days and just plan my moves between rush hour and use the expressways. I have an in car video camera to record all the action in case of an accident and inevitable, 'farang is wrong'. It cost about $50 dollars and has saved me loads in possible fines or stitch-ups.

A dash cam for $50?? What a deal. Great idea.

  6. The English sign was funny to anyone with a sense of humor and without a stick up their butt. :)

It certainly is funny to me. I don't care who wrote it. Just puts a bit of humor into one's day as far as i'm concerned. I don't think the OP was trying to mock or be vicious. it's just funny.

  7. I would like to buy an iPhone here in the USA. I've bought Apple products in the past and have liked having their phone support available. I understand from Apple that if I buy the phone here and use it in LOS I will void my warranty and brick the phone. Have you found a way around this and had success with your iPhone in LOS?

I'm prepared to but a non commitment phone from Apple (699UDS) as I'm out of contract with A T & T. It hurts but that's what i figure I'll have to do.

Thanks for any info. on your experiences.

  8. Even better, I love when Farangs that are confronted with a non-English speaker, feel that shouting louder and louder in their incomprehensible pigeon English, expecting the increased volume will suddenly make the other person understand. Forget English class teachers, just keep screaming at the kids till the are fluent!! really!

When people talk to me on behalf of my wife, it may be rude, but I just reply, 'ask her!'. If they try the two word sentences, she usually says something along the lines of, 'You know you should really take some English lessons, they are cheap here in Thailand..." I love her wit.

gotta agree, that loud talking is funny as can be.

  9. :D :D

This will probably put a few people out of work. :)
The Cabinet has approved new regulations that prohibit karaoke parlours from providing drinking or singing partners to customers, with their business licences being revoked if they do.

Just deny access to karaoke to those who can't sing and the problem is solved :D

brilliant..... that will definitely solve the whole thing.. LOL

  11. Unless things have changed, be warned that if you overstay and you are checked by immigration or tourist police anywhere outside the airport you will most likely be arrested.

Stickman wrote a horrible piece about his experience with a few days overstay a few years ago. I think I would be absolutely certain to not make that mistake

  12. u can open a us itunes account (which has the best content) without a usa credit card. and use a online supplier for gift cards for itunes that u pay for with paypal and add to your account.

So if I had a UK iTunes account , and One friend had a USA iTunes account , and One had a Spanish iTunes account

would we all have exactually the same choice of apps to buy ..?

    Thanks

don't know if this helps but there are some stores that sell pre-loaded iTunes credit.

I bought such a thing at Costco here in the USA. i got 4 X $15 dollar credits for a sale price of $49 (UDS) =$60.

hope that gives u an idea. don't know if they will ship to LOS but maybe they will or somebody will.

    Good luck.

  13. I went to the VA and the doctor had a good laugh then signed off on it. To answer your second question I found that getting the OA retirement visa in the states prior to arrival here was much easier due to landing in Thailand with a year of no problems and the running around trying to figure out what was needed here but I knew nobody to help out. But once again not having to depend on someone else was a nice feeling and if you work your OA properly you can get the second year for free with just having to renew your mult entry for 3800bt

    Many thanks for your reply.

I served in the US military but I don't have VA health coverage due to the VA financial restrictions.

I accept whatever the cost is for various Thai visa requirements.

i just want an easy path and no problems in the future.

I think the LA embassy is not going to relent on the medial.

  14. I went to the Los Angeles Thai Embassy today to ask a few questions about getting a Thai visa for a retirement (long time with multiple entry).

I explained to the lady at the information desk that I visited my doctor and he told me he had no idea how I could even get a test for Leprosy or elephantiasis. He's not a new kid on the block as he's 60 years old. He suggested I call the Center for Communicable Disease control (CDC) in Atlanta. that seemed a little over the top to me. By that I mean is it possible the Thai's want a test that is so rarely given that I have to call a central place in the USA like that to get any info.

The embassy would not give me any recommendations for a local doctor.

I just want the path of least resistance.

The lady told me that my print out for financial was fine and she said I could type out the immigration medical form all in english and just get one of the four copies required notarized.

    I'm at a bit of a loss.

is it really easy to only request a 60 day visa and get all this sorted out in LOS? And where would I go to do that?
