  1. Dirk,

I am a retired High School principal from the USA. Classroom teacher for 10 years, Special education. I have taught all subjects in grades K-12.

My English skills, spoken and written, are excellent.

I would base a daily curriculum around his homework or current study area.

My fee per day would be 1000 baht.

I live in the Chonburi area. Contact me if you are interested.

    Thank you.

I think OP only wants 1 hour of tuition.

  2. I think 100k is ok if you aren't renting and have everything paid for and don't have any children . All depends on the lifestyle you want

You jest right? 50k is MORE than enough, especially if you pay cash for your car/moto and condo/house. If you are going to rent accomodation, then 60-70k would suffice. And this is not denying yourself much in terms of farang food/restos and stuff. Now, if you are planning to "party" every nite, then you can add in another 20-30k per month. (Also, plan to have at least US$ 50-75k (or your currency equivalent) in cash or highly-liquid investments to cover unexpected or emergency expenses...mainly medical emergencies.)

I rent a 3BR 2BA newish house, own a car, and support no women or children, and eat out farang every nite for about 35k per month :D

    I don't jest :D

I play golf so I'd have to allow 20k a month for that. Health insurance, car insurance, UBC, electricity another 10k. Fuel 5k. Would leave me 65k for a month which would be ok. Fortunately or unfortunately ( I'm not sure :) ) I've got a wife and a kid so I couldn't have the lifestyle I want on 100k a month. That's all I'm saying, everyones expectations are different, especially my wife's :D

  3. Whoops pressed the wrong button :D

If you fancy Falang food try Simple Simon on Soi 5, Surf kitchen is good, last time I was there it was packed, although if you are a non smoker be prepared for some Russian to start smoking sitting next to you, that's what I had :)

  4. Actually there are quitre a few places in Jomtien Complex that are worth having a meal at, just wander around. Also Linda's across the road from the complex on Thappraya Road side. Magg's in Thepprasit is another.

I'm sorry but Linda's is rather expensive...........275Baht for cow pat gai

  5. You are attempting to compare apples and oranges. The Triton is bigger, heavier and being a diesel will deliver better economy than the Honda gasoline engine, especially in city driving.

I'd buy a Honda with a small engine, could give you a good mileage. The Triton isn't really good for cities, parking. The Honda also comes with more features.

    Agree totally

  6. The tories have not got a minority gov' yet, it's looking like labour, libs and SNP will join to continue leading the UK. This has got to be a better option than Cameron. The big financial F' up hasn't hit yet, but it will do in the next few months. Brown's got to be the best to lead us out of it.

Why not, he led us into it! Come to think of it, that's a really bad move given that the only people who vote for him are the recipients of his policies, those on benefits, immigrants etc.

I'm not convinced Brown's to blame for the financial crisis, I think he should of done more sooner. I think Brown is the best to deal with it as he's more experienced than cameron. The Tories policies just don't add up. I voted for Labour for that reason, I'm not on benefits and never have been and the last time I checked I wasn't an immigrant.

Apparently if you live in the UK and you don't like immigrants you're a bigot.

The reason the UK has so much debt is because Brown and co were spending everything they could lay their hands on, wait until the new government come in and raise taxes to pay for Labour's mess. Wasn't Brown the Chancellor before he became Prime Minister?

Anyway, you live in England and the English voted overwhelmingly for Cameron, if it wasn't for the Jocks the Tories would be forming government today.

  7. Some interesting posts in here, the cost of living all over the world is going up, I worked out that back in the UK we need about £800 per months to cover household bills and weekly shopping etc this includes things like electric, gas, BT, broadband, sky TV, water rates, Poll tax etc, the car. This doesn't include the mortgage. For a family of 5 this is very basic living, £1200 per months is more realistic allows for a few treats like taking the mrs out for a meal occasionally and treating the kids etc. How would this compare to Pattaya?

I already have a house out in Pattaya, so how much would I need to "just get by" per month bearing in mind I'd want the kids to go to a decent school? I'm pretty certain it would less than the UK. The likelyhood of the Tories getting in tomorrow will also increase the cost of living in Blighty, so for me it's time to consider my options. I've wanted to move lock stock and barrel to Thailand for a while now, the wifes happy to move back.

Is my family better off out of Blighty?

£800/£1,200 a month (Baht 40.000/60,000) exclusive of rent or mortgage costs will get you a reasonable to good standard of living in Pattaya although I can't speak to school costs. But with three kids that wouldn't give you much of a safety net in case something drastic happens to the Pound, at least in the UK you can work and you have the social secuirty system as a safety net, lots of variables in this subject.

quite agree, I had origanally thought that the ideal figure to feel secure is about 100k baht per month. I need to work a little harder then! maybe next year. Thanks for your input

  8. The £ wil increase to approx 55-58 within 6 weeks and then slowly strengthen throughout the year hitting mid 60s at year end. The uncertainty of the £ has been shoring up the Euro the past few weeks, expect that to plummet to 35 within a forthnight.

    :)

A few months ago someone did the same when I said the Euro would hit 40...... :D ...currencies are anyones guess, the full extent of the election hasnt born fruits yet, word in the city is good already :D

The chances of the Pound hitting 55-58 against THB are about as remote as winning the the jackpot in the lottery, if you wanted to be ambitous and sensible you might have said 50 since that's slightly more believable, but not by much.

    Maybe 5 years :D

  9. Private Dancer is not intened to be high brow literature; just entertaining reading, which I thought it was. The way it is written in the first person from each character's point of view is different and interesting.

A few expat writers are good, a few are OK and many, many suck, but Private Dancer is one of the better expat books for what it is. The Big Mango, Touch the Dragon and Memoirs of a Bangkok Warrior are all OK to pretty good.

The Big Mango and Killing Plato, both by Jake Needham, excellent read, much better than a lot of the local dross that get's published

  10. I'm sorry you are wrong, I've got about the same amount of assets as you, I'd like to leave a reasonable amount to my Falang children, rather than have an Australian court tell me how my money would be divided, in the event my wife divorced me.

It really is as simple as that.

  11. With houses on the dark side Alan Bolton one of the sponsors of this website has many houses listed, although probably the best way is to ride around looking for signs on houses, you will probably get a better deal that way. Having your own transport will make your life a bit easier if you do decide to live on the Darkside.

  12. Price, Location????????????

If money no problem I'd try View Talay Villas in Jomtien, nice place average price around 60,000 Baht a month, nice villas :D

You honestly think View Talay Villas are nice???? Oh my.... :)

Sorry, I should have written, If you want to stay in Jomtien, View Talay VILLAS are nice, However there are places that are nicer.

With your font of knowledge I'm sure you could name several nice estates around Jomtien, instead of making some snide remark :D

  14. I can't understand why people would buy a house when you can't own the land, condos might be different, but term deposits in Australia are paying around 7%, virtually the same as most properties would yield if they were rented out anyway. And you get the benefit of getting your cash back 100%, not a property that will possibly depreciate in value.

It might come as a surprise to you, but there are actually people who buy houses to live in, it is called a home.

I rent a house, it's my home, I guess it's what you make of it
