It's a shame these "Farangs" weren't arrested & jailed/fined as they are flouting the laws laid down by Thailand in this period of global crisis to keep us all safe. We all need to comply & obey the laws, not ignore them! We are all guests here & should behave as such, not ignore the rules, but set an example for others to follow. Thai's do their own thing & have every right to do so, but make no mistake they notice everything the "Farang" does here. These acts of denial are shameful. We all get "tarred with the same brush" & these "Farangs" are doing no one any favors, especially long stay retirees & expats. Their complete lack of reason & ignorance of the fact that this COHIV19 is a global threat to humanity is beyond my comprehension. Their behaviour really labels them as undesirables, they should be given stern warnings by immigration, & only once, that further breaches of the law will revoke their visas & initiate deportation asap ....... there is no excuse for this type of behaviour. Those responsible should hang their heads in shame ..... fact.

I disagree with the original post completely. I love DIY, also you are not waiting around for people to arrive, plus time is your own & not to be wasted on unreliable people. It keeps you mobile & you do not stagnate. Here in Thailand you have to keep active & DIY & housework is an excellent way of doing that & part of living here within the laws. It's very enjoyable to do work at home that is positive/constructive & completion gives me a lot of satisfaction. I'm sure 90% plus of retirees have mastered DIY during their life span & will tackle any small jobs with relish. I don't live in a world where I get my backside wiped by everyone for a few baht. I enjoy being active, but I will gladly pay for someone's help when I need it. Being reliant on someone here period is foolhardy, fact ......... especially retired farangs. As I've said my experiences here has highlighted the fact that the local culture is seriously out if sync with time & dare I say it our culture too. I certainly won't waste my retirement standing around all day waiting for things to happen .......... it's a bit like watching paint dry.

I think the increase is probably very true as I've noticed the increase in aggression on the roads, which is probably proportional to the increase of traffic, especially in built up areas. During peak hours this increases dramatically, which can only lead to more accidents & deaths. My 20 years of driving here has seen a daily spate of accidents, some minor & some very serious, which could have been avoided but for the lack of forethought, "me first" attitudes & totally ignoring road signs & traffic laws. The roads are confusing at the best of times & incorrectly signed/marked on the roads are no excuse ........ people here just seem to have a "death wish". All this "Karma" stuff is nonsense, but the culture here will never change. Politicians, police & those in authority just shrug their shoulders & allow this carnage to continue year by year. If you drive here in Thailand get use to it ....... fact.

I can't say I disagree with this sign. Speaking the language is certainly an advantage as the standard of English here is poor & most is self taught. It's very noticeable in all restaurants as the waiters seem to struggle with the menu in any foreign language & that is evident as the photos far outweigh the descriptions. The food when served is invariably not the same as the photo & "woe betide you" if you want change something on the dish.
Communication is important & between Thai's & Farangs here has always been very difficult, so not getting past that barrier often causes misunderstandings & disputes. Sad thing is Thai's are not that tolerant when it comes to customers rights etc, hence any arguments often lead to heated arguments & customers are asked to leave, but not before paying the bill ........ leaving everyone upset.
It can quickly become a strange environment to spend a holiday for those that are not aware of the culture here .......... I've been here a long time & still the onus to be polite, lower your voice, don't do this, don't do that, etc is all placed on the visitor. Tempers here are on edge & fray so quickly here, so it's always best to be on your best behavior & read all the warnings before you arrive, any trouble move on, find another venue.
The sign may seem to you to be "tongue in cheek", but trust me when I say there are dark undertones in the need of heeding here ..... fact. If I saw this sign it would make me turn around & go elsewhere. Who needs hassle on your evening out ....??? The thinking here is all wrong ....... even if it is tongue-in-cheek.

Hi Magmur .............. I never thought I'd ever stop. Then one day my son said to me "Please stop smoking Daddy". He been to kindergarten & evidently they were told about smoking. At the time I thought it to be little too young for youngsters to grasp the dangers of smoking, but I was wrong. I asked him why & he replied that he wanted me to live a long time & see him finish school so he could take care of me when I was very old! It really struck home ........ so I promised & you can't lie to your child. I had to keep my promise, hence it was a no brainer for me.
I think if you have something that matters the most in the world then use that to combat the addiction. I just made my mind up to quit & never looked back, didn't miss it for a minute once I focussed on my reason for doing so. Good luck ....... hope it works as easy for you as it did me. Cheers.

The numbers I'm seeing in town will not sustain the economy here in Pattaya City. If it's the same here as other venues in Thailand 2020 is heading for a major downturn in tourism. The main problem is definitely the "Baht" ........... too strong, making everything too expensive in Thailand. Most things here cost more now than in their own countries, so going elsewhere is a "no brainer". Thailand needs to stop trying to fudge the issues whilst the rich get richer & start thinking of Thailand's future for it's people, not the chosen few who are buying luxury goods at knock down prices due to the exchange rates around the world ...... a sad fact that's just ignored because the "elitists" in control can.

All the excuses in the world will not fix the problem that Thailand has today & it will continue unless the Thai Baht is revalued. This is not rocket science & lowering prices, promotional offers etc etc will not fix this. The government must take action, revalue the Thai baht to an acceptable level to get the economy going again.
People will not come on holiday here unless they consider Thailand to be good value for money. At the moment the exchange rate has killed the "golden goose" as most things here are more expensive than in their homelands. Even meals now have become very expensive whereas previously in yesteryears it was well known food prices were cheap, delicious & the food plentiful. Sadly, that has changed too ............ I've found the quality of the food is not the same. It could be that food is "in & out" of fridges too often due to the lack of tourists, but standards certainly have been lowered. I can only surmise that food stocks in restaurants are being kept longer due to this. Vietnam, Cambodia & Laos are being chosen rather than Thailand as a holiday destination as everything is much cheaper ........... fact.
Tourism is all about "value for money" ........... Thailand is no longer a tourist destination only because the Thai baht is much too strong. You only have to look at the 7/11's here to see the number of tourists using them ........ especially the Chinese who are the largest group of tourists here. It is not only for cold drinks, they "self cater" & do not eat in restaurants very often, probably to offset the cost of their holiday here. The Indian tourist group are very much the same too ........... as I've said it's not "rocket science" to fathom out why the economy is failing.
Yes, Safety Standards, Rip Off's, Road Hazards, Pedestrian Risks, Water Hazards, Health Issues etc etc are all things in Thailand that we can control/decide for ourselves & make our own choices, but can do nothing about the exchange rate.
Hence, tourists are now voting with their feet & going elsewhere ...... and will continue to do so! Wake up Thailand, quick fixes are not the answer. You have had a land given to you on a "golden platter" that people will pay to visit here on holiday. Don't allow greedy minorities cloud your judgement. Stop the "super rich" from keeping the baht strong so they can get richer ..... fact. Long term growth & healthy profits annually are the key to a thriving economy, then the general public here will no longer continue to struggle & will be content ....... it is they who deserve the support of government, which is sadly lacking at this moment in time.

Warning signs have been ignored for far too long .......... now the "rot has set in" it's obvious that there's no turning back as the "loss of face" is so important here. It will continue with "immediate first aid" measures until they run out of "short term" quick fixes. Pattaya was a very profitable adult playground for Thailand & had been since the early days of the Vietnam war (1964 era) ................ it just sprung up from nowhere with very little investment. In fact, it was a "golden gift" which was the inherited basis of tourism here ......... everyone knew that Pattaya was the "city of fun". It was lively, exotic & adult entertainment at it's best. Now it's all doom & gloom, full of bored & angry people, both local & foreign ......... the fun is long gone. Most of us now have left or just stay home. Sadly the town now has the Chinese, Indian & Russian tourists who also have started to "dwindle" of late. It will not be long before all the neighboring countries will seriously benefit from Thailand killing the "golden goose". RIP Pattaya ............... I have so many fond memories of what "once was" ............ sad.

Why is there a need for a British Ambassador to Thailand at all?? They certainly don't seem to care about the expat community here & I'm sure any gathering chaired by them would give the Ambassador a really hard time if he had the balls to do so! Many British expats, if not all of them are frustrated to the point that they all think having an embassy here is a waste as it's ineffective period. Our government circles have become so inept the whole world is laughing at us. No one looks to us for guidance now ...... Even our embassy in Bangkok has been sold which shows that the UK do not care about it's citizens .......... or serious about having an embassy here. It is a pure waste of taxpayer's money even for the Ambassador to come here, selling "Wireless Road" without thinking about the services that were provided to the expatriate community here was huge mistake. The whole policy thing regarding having a British Ambassador here is now nonsense & he has no clout whatsoever, nor welcome. ....... fact.

OP if you have been here on a retirement extension for 20 years, why are you keeping 800,000 bht in the bank. Back then it was much less and was grandfathered, surely.
Always used a Letter of Income from British Embassy. Now it's been stopped without any consideration for pensioners, hence the problem.

Hi folks .......... Well it's been a run of almost 20yrs for me here on a retirement visa. My visa expires on 20th July & I visited Jomtien to check up on the rules. I don't think many pensioners will like the option of transferring 65,000 Thai baht from their overseas accounts each month, especially with the fluctuation & the strength of the Thai Baht.
Now that my pensions have dipped slightly below the 800,000 baht mark due to the baht being 38/£ I will be forced to open an account here to top up the difference. Due to the time scale I think I will probably leave the country & return on a tourist visa until I can rearrange my affairs. However, I don't wish to change monies by transfer each month so that immigration can see I have this amount each month, it's just not practical. I did use my letters from the Brit Embassy, but they are now as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike as far as immigration is concerned.
My initial thoughts are getting my retirement visa done by an agency, which I've not even considered before. If this fails traveling outside Thailand is my other option until my funds have settled.
Any advice any member can give would be most helpful. I intend staying in the area even if my retirement visa takes a year before I reapply. Thank you for your help it's much appreciated.

There is no cheaper charlie than a Thai! ................. Com'on guys get real. When it comes to paying bills on a night out rest assured you'll be expected to pay. It's also expected that we give all our savings away to a complete stranger & their family if you become romantically involved .......... "it is what it is" here! You just try getting your money back afterwards when you have paid for something, or loaned money in good faith etc .......... it just ain't gonna happen. I think it's a ploy to try & embarrass us into giving money away. They have learned our weaknesses & play on them. There is no such thing here as a "Cheap Charlie", especially with the rate of exchange being what it is today ....... fact. Rising costs here are becoming unacceptable for some ....... don't expect any local help when financial issues become reality.

I realise that people who have moved here recently may have problems, but I think anyone who has been here more than 10 years should have no excuse.
You definitely need a reality check. There are many of us here who are not so "well heeled" as you appear to be & have been here longer than you. This attitude is typical of many of the expats here of "I'm alright jack" & boast about it. We need to pull together & support everyone on this, especially those living on state pensions with Thai families depending on them ..... fact.

Sadly, I can not be at this meeting, but I will support this all the way 100%. Perhaps we should get a petition going now & make all embassies aware that we are serious about taking this to our governments. The Embassies here don't do a great deal for us expats here, mostly their time is taken up looking after tourists who have problems whilst on holiday here. It is not a lot to ask our embassies to support their retirees & set up a method to verify our incomes for visas purposes that is acceptable to the Thai authorities & Immigration. It is nonsense to think they cannot do this. They have the power to do so as they represent our governments on all matters concerning their respective countries. In my opinion it's a case of not wanting to "go that further mile" to help those that have retired here, some for 20 years or more. Their attitude towards this very important issue is shameful & I can only hope that this reaches the ears of government, as it has left many, especially those in their twilight years, very worried about their immediate future. A sad state of affairs ............ any petition by us here will heard for sure if we all support this 100% ....... fact.

From a few posts I've noticed that members don't like the "Worldwide Tax Problem" in PI? I'm not sure what is meant by this ........ are you saying money is taxed again when it arrives in country? My income comes from UK based pensions, hence it's tax there before it goes into my account ....... just wondering. I'd appreciate clarity here ........ thanks.

Loads of scuba diving in the area, and boat trips to islands.
Blue Rock Resort has a nice beach restaurant, pot of tea 50 peso.
Cheap Charlies rooftop bar has cheap beer all day, 35 peso small bottle.
Thanks ........ just the ticket. It will give me my "starter for ten" & onwards & upwards from there ...... exactly what I needed. Much appreciated.

I agree many negative things are said about the Philippines and unfair to compare, one man's meat is another mans poison.
OP it will take you a whiles to find what suits you I would suggest starting with the most popular tourist areas first and go from there.
You say an island living & a few home comforts would be welcome and a beach house, well you have aprox 7,600 islands to pick from. ????
Thanks for your post............. where would you suggest? From what you say you know the area well?

I've spent a lot of time there & unless for a wedding or funeral to attend there's no compelling reason to step foot there again......
Too bad the topic isn't thumbnailed someplace......
I'm sure you are right about dozens of threads on the subject, but how about an update? I'm looking for something more positive & a recent up to date prior to going & having a look myself.
I've always used the "search" option on TV before raising a new topic ........ sadly it does not appear to work that well. <removed>........ but later found a thread where I could copy my posts. Are other members having this problem?? Cheers .....

I'm thinking of moving to the Phillipines within the next twelve months to retire. Any advice on the best areas to live, what I'll need & general info on expat life there. I'm ex military so have travelled ........... I'm looking for the quiet life now, so island living & a few home comforts would be welcome. Even a beach house would do & a boat for fishing etc. ..... but I'll not be going very far south there as that would be a little extreme. Cheers.

My problem as a UK citizen is that the UK embassy does not give a rats rrrse about me and as my extension is not due for renewal until 23rd August so even if I tried for an embassy letter with a maximum 45 days ahead It still won't work for me.
Sure I can get the balance to make it up BUT without an embassy letter it won't work. In fact by that time I will have had a rise in my military pension, a rise in my company pension and with the new tax allowance in the budget I will only be a few thousand baht short of the monthly income.
So what will the UK embassy do for me next year?
Fark all.
But the UK government will still tax me.
Barstewards.
Yup ..... you got that right mate! The embassy here do not give a toss about us retired folk living here, although we both have worked & paid tax to the UK government all our working life ........ & we are still paying them, but being ex military too we expect this attitude towards us because it's not ever gonna change. They pay us "lip service" & that's about it. It's "naive" to think that our government will support & protect us, even their embassies around the world are full of "muppets", so don't anyone hold their breath. It's only the charitable organisations that help ex servicemen .... fact. I live a comfortable life here & have sufficient funds to qualify for an "Income Letter", but there is no way I want to have a bank account here with 800,000 baht doing nothing for me, hence it's not an option. I'm a survivor & thankfully still have my health, mobility & a sound mind ...... I don't need these "out of touch" folk with reality in the embassy I'll sort myself out. I'm due to renew in June next year , so I just slip under the wire to renew my retirement visa for another year, but I'll be using this timescale to move on. Sad really ...... been here nearly 16yrs & enjoyed every minute keeping out of trouble! Ha! Ha! Still a great place to retire to for me, but I'll probably live elsewhere in Asia now as back to "Blighty" is not an option. I guess a change is as good as a rest they say? ............. Cheers.

The latest requirements by Thai Immigration, which will come into effect when all "Income Letters" from various embassies cease must surely affect many of us that have retired here & lived here for years ........... some expats in their late 70 & 80yrs will find this a bitter pill to swallow as they have made a permanent home here. Again, we see these embassies here in Thailand not protecting or even thinking about the consequences of their actions, especially the British & American Embassies, who should be doing their utmost to protect us. The well being & quality of life of their compatriots is paramount, but is simply not even considered & gone are the days when these embassies had any "clout" with their host nation. It's evident that no further dialogue is forthcoming & these embassies have left their "expats" hanging out to dry by allowing individuals to fend for themselves.
I expect some TV members will just "glibly" say "suck it up" etc. without the slightest consideration for those living on pensions, but not everyone is fortunate enough to have 800,000 Thai baht that they can leave languishing in a bank account here untouched for three months or more. You can blame these so called "Visa Agents" that still exist here for the latest rule changes due to all the scams & illegal methods that they've adopted over the years to obtain visas., especially the idiots that advertise on Facebook that you don't need to comply with Immigration rules! These are the people that need deporting not the genuine article living here on a pension. Now, the only people that will suffer the consequences are those that genuinely have enough pension each month to qualify for visas to retire here legally, but due to this recent change will be forced to leave when their visa expires. Most came when they were 60 'ish & now are well into their late 70's & 80"s ........ the rate of exchange was 74 baht/£ when they arrived, so they've taken some hard knocks along the way. This change will be dramatic for them, especially as they've stayed within the law for years & now find themselves alone, without help & stranded. It's appalling that these embassies are allowing this change to happen as they must realize the dire consequences of their actions to the less fortunate in their twilight years. This is a change that no one even considered as the rules have been firmly in place for years & I blame our embassies entirely for placing us in this position ............. they have let us down badly. The embassy is there to provide a proper consular service to everyone that needs it ............ I sometimes wonder why we have an embassy at all here with this latest fiasco.
Sadly, I can foresee many expats leaving here now as some will not want to have 800,000 Thai Baht languishing in an account here earning very little interest or are pensioners that do not have this to qualify for a Retirement Visa. Of those that do leave I expect them to move elsewhere in the region, especially Philippines for Brits as they have a reciprocal agreement with the UK regarding pensions etc, whereas here in Thailand they don't, it's not index linked ........ another £40+ per week (£160/mth) since their pensions were frozen here in 2003 would be most welcome for those able to move on there. No one I'm sure wishes to move back to the dampness, cold, miserable existence of Blighty ........ plus fish & chips in newspaper. I wish everyone well & good luck to those that find themselves in this appalling situation ........ blame your "limp wristed" governments for this. I suspect there are a lot of ex servicemen here affected by this .................. hence, this latest "balls up" by these spineless individuals representing our countries will come as no surprise. Time to move on I guess ............. fact.

My thoughts ............... Malayan Pit Viper. Nasty little suckers, no warning just strike. Plentiful everywhere in Thailand. Built up areas don't seem to bother them much ........ even come across them on dark evenings after rain on roads looking for rodents. I've stopped wearing "flip flops" now ........ nearly stepped on one on the darkside in Soi Khaw Noi, only just I saw it in time ......... curled up in an entrance to a beer bar, thought it was dog's poo .... yikes!! Many juveniles around the area too ......... as venomous & deadly from birth ...... about 20cm in length. They don't run, stepping on one ruins your day. Hospital immediately & get treatment ......... loss of limb or possibly worse if you delay. As I've said probably the worst snake around here due to their commonality although there's other varieties that are as dangerous, but not so common. ie Russel Viper, Banded Kraits & Cobra's.

Most of us expat's living here accept the fact that foreigners will always get ripped off ....... it's the "nature of the beast here". Most vendors view us as "cash cows" & will extort as much money from you as they possibly can. They do not see us as long term customers, hence it's a rip off each time you buy something ......... especially if you try to shop on the local scene. I personally use the supermarkets now where everything is marked/bar coded as I'm tired of being ripped off by local vendors. It avoids any misunderstandings & I like to keep my days free of any aggro. I do not blame them one bit as it really is "survival of the fittest" here in Thailand ... you can see more frustration now on the streets & markets with the influx of Chinese tourists .... life is becoming more & more difficult for local vendors. I keep away from all tourists areas now as I've started shopping at local shops run by expats that have all the "comforts of home" ....... imported foods at very fair prices, which suits me fine .......... a good variety of homemade curries, pies, bacon, fish etc, plus all the different kinds of cheeses you could ever want. I only shop locally for veg & bread now ........ without the "Thai hassle" it certainly keeps my blood pressure normal & life's become a breeze .... fact.

Better the devil you know than the devil you don't right? .......... I've been here now for 15yrs. It's been relatively trouble free visa wise as I'm here on a "retirement visa". Also, I arrived when the baht was around 74-78baht/GBP so life was really good cash wise doing almost anything that took your fancy in "tinzeltown". Now it's around the 43-44 baht/GBP I'm still very fortunate to qualify for the yearly visa from the pensions I accumulated during my working life. I've considered leaving Thailand many times, but other expats I've known over the past years have tried it, returned with horror stories, hence I've remained here & just travelled to PI, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam etc on trips using a multiple entry visa.
These past years I've seen many changes too. Most of us do not like change as it interferes mostly with our daily lives. However, many farangs have indeed now left, which really has hit the quality of life here for the retirees who remain. All the mates, friends & social gatherings have disappeared & this is a great shame. I think in the main the exchange rate was largely to blame for pensioners, but the stringent Immigration requirements for visas here also add to the difficulties of living here, hence we have lost a major part of our expat community.
Quality of life here is still "what you make it". That's one thing Thailand allows you to do ............ make your own way & do what you want. It's a country where infact "anything goes" ......... as long as it's legal. As long as you have your licence to drive & tax/insurance is up to date I've found the police very easy to deal with when stopped at a check point. If I'm speeding etc I pay the fine & move on ........... problem dealt with ........ no lengthy wait for a court appearance. Brilliant.
I do however, find that society here has changed dramatically over the years & although the "loss of face' has been with us for as long as I can remember it's evident that politeness is definitely "out of the window', especially in Pattaya with the general public. I avoid shopping like the plague as shop keepers seem to be so aggressive towards foreigners ....... "what you want" or "up to you" & seem to resent the fact of you being there. It's as if they are saying ......... " don't waste my time, get what you want .... I'm in the middle of a game on my ipad"! If you ask for anything it's a "no have" or you are being troublesome ............. my time to leave! Ha! I realise that this is mostly due to the mindset of these people, but it does annoy you. Hence, I give it a miss.
Thai's are definitely fun loving people if you want to throw a party. Depending on how much you are going to spend it can turn a quiet gathering into a riot within minutes as Thai girls cannot hold their liquor! If you are lonely at home you can always find female company downtown to brighten up the day. I think going out, being polite to everyone & generally being kind to those you meet will stand you in good stead here ............. seldom will you fall foul of the aggressive behaviour that's so easy found if you don't stay alert. Getting really "pissed out of your head" is a "no no" as you are quaranteed to end up without cash & sleeping it off somewhere. It's a really great place to retire to & I have absolutely no regrets moving here ........ long may it continue.
I'm a Brit, served my country for 30+yrs in the military, plus other HMS jobs & retired here. I've not been back to the UK at all & I have no intention of doing so. Too many bad memories, which I'm reminded of daily due to the unfair judicial system there. The country seems to have gone completely downhill since & is in crisis now more than ever. My only regret is that I must continue to pay tax on all my UK earnings, which then seem to be continually squandered in benefits to all the " wafes & strays" that enter the country, who do not deserve it, but it's sanctioned by an inept government. I honestly regret serving my country now ..... what a complete waste of time that was! I may be a bitter Brit, but I'm proud to be an expat. I voted with my feet ............ I wish everyone would threaten to leave the UK unless the government starts to "get their shit together" ......... then perhaps I'd consider coming home to visit.

Pattaya: Dozens of foreigners flouting virus regulations getting drunk in a bar - owners arrested

Irrespective of all the "Do's & Don'ts in Thailand, plus what the Thai's do in their own country we are guests here! It's a no brainer that "Farangs" whatever nationality have a moral duty to behave. Everyone needs to "sing from the same page" & condemn this blatant disregard for the law & other people's well being here .......... there is no excuse whatever way you twist it. I'm definitely ashamed how my fellow countrymen act when on holiday here in Thailand ........ their lack of manners, selfishness & ignorance of their surroundings really makes me cringe, but it's tolerated here locally as money has been the priority here for years. The damage they've caused to the image of "Farangs" here is at an all time low ......... sadly, it's been well deserved.
