  1. I would like to butt in here with a different situation.

We are considering volunteering, for a week or two, to help with The Christopher Robert Foundation https://www.facebook.com/thecrproject

There would be me on a retirement visa, the lady, Thai (not married) and probably 2 10yr old kids (Thai, belonging to the ladys sisters)

Could I do this without a work permit?

    From The Project website:

"Everyone at the Christopher Robert Project is a volunteer and maintains employment independent from the project."

As they were launched in May 2011, you should ask them how regarding work permits they have handled all their other non-Thai volunteers. And if they say 'You are the first', I would proceed with caution.

Regardless whether everyone has outside employment, each "volunteer" needs a wp attached to the organization as well.

This sounds like a round about way to employ teachers in the backwaters to me.

  2. This is the last outpost of opportunity and is looking to crash and burn behind all the others. The senseless questions have no bounds. You either have the money or don't and blathering on her changes nothing.

Go to an embassy or consulate with all your paperwork - including the financials you DO have. Include a letter from the wife, photos and the base of documents to make your case and take your shot.

Going on and on in a public forum accomplishes nothing. Not only is every emb/consulate different but every applicant is different. If you guys have bot learned that by now, you have learned nothing.

Further, if SV requires money and you don't have it - don't use them. In fact perhaps using them only encourages a requirement. Surely does not lessen it.

I would very much urge people who are clued in to stop posting every detail of their sucesses and I wiuld urge the clueless to start reading some old threads here as well as information in general on the Internet.

This will be the last consulate to go and they all went because of too much blah blah, speculation and conjecture as well.as too much sharing of details best left to visa applicants.

    When YOU go, YOU know.

Stop using SV, damn sure about that one.

I'll give the consulate six months before something changes and not much longer than that before it follows the pack. Thank you Thai Visa.

  3. It appears that the honorary consuls will process your requests (if not shuttered) but it is now required for you to front up. Very clever. As ThaVisa posters have boasted about sending visa apps hither and yon, then posting of their exploits on TV in should be no surprise the other shoe has dropped.

By requiring reporting in person, the consul removes the work and hassles of sending all.the paperwork back and fielfing nasty calls. Answer = no. sorry. Next...

As soon as an angle is posted on TV, it's finished. I have been on this board in one eay or another since its creation and I've seen it all ruined.

It's fine to share basic information, directions, costs - but the fastest way to screw yourself is by sharing your insider information - with strangers.

This is my second to last post I will make on TV.

  4. PS my blog, at least the focus here (PP) is by avoiding the crowds. Visiting the great spots at sunrise, taking alternative transport or parasiting along on a one way longtail and sleeping on.pp leh and bamboo. Visiting great spots away grom the tourist areas mid day. The trick tovisiting these eco disasters is getting up early and enjoying - then get away and hide.

Of course staying on PP intolerable and basically, want to eat a simple meal, down to beach or in my hammock, have some drinks and gooood night

  5. So many questions asked that Google could probably answer for you or why not try using the search function on the forum.

These questions have been asked and answered thousands of times.

Because I am looking for precise and accurate information. As detailed as I had asked. The Internet is full of low quality and outdated information. Some of it will get you close enough, but its nit good enough for me. 50000.pages of crap and ads.

Another reason is that if I get correlated information from the boatd to some websites, it makes the site info more valid.

I have obviously done some research, enough to ask the info above, but thx for snarky response Hans.

  6. Honestly, I have been in Asia 20 years and never stepped foot. Im way ahead of all.you - my antithesis of fun and nature.

Im totally removed from.this nonsense, doing notbing but camping for almost a decade.

Im doing a blog and I feel.important to include because no matter how you tell people its shit - they still have to go, right?

While I appreciate the critque of both me and the island - Im looking for some precise info.

It is a very special and unique travel blog, not the typical copy paste travel crap.

I will have to do this myself unfortunately, but I am trying to get a lot of the copy writing out of the way.

Anyone have any info to pass on in regard to camping Bamboo, Mayha and PP Don (base)? Internet turns up only paid overnights and links to companies usually dead.

Would like to thank for what has been offered!! Also need info from Krabi.

PYFeFe - can I swipe that photo for my blog?

  7. I had this idea a few years back. Ship in mobile homes that can be put on wifes land. If divorce ensues, you can ship the unit back to companies land in nakorn nowhere bought for storage or resale.

Great idea, just take a lot of capital. Even thought of contacting mobile home mfgs in US.

Trouble is Thai homes so cheap. Farangs though always have to.build em.out special. If more guys just built what Thais live in.and deal.with that, ez to.walk away. Most guys in a condo in bkk would lose more.

  8. Krabi to Phi Phi

    1. Can inclusive ferry ticket be purch at new bus terminal?

    2. Bus termainal to where is best place to buy ticket (town/pier)

    3. How to get to pier from bus terminal (price)

    4. How to get to pier from town (price)

    5. ferry drops where? Ton Sai?

Speedboat option and information? Best, cheapest, run daily, take gear, do one ways...Where do they drop and issues getting to island if any in high or low tide.

Best option for cheap trip to PP Ley (one way)

Best option for cheap trip to Bamboo/Mai Pai (one way)

    ==================================

    Sppedboat operator that runs:

PP Ley > PP Don > Bamboo

    or

Bamboo > PP Ley > PP Don

  9. Which ferries from which piers are running from Phuket to PhiPhi

Do they all leave from the standard piers?

Where do the ferries drop on Phi Phi, Ton Sai? Issues going to land?

Price about B500-600 with 400 return? I read buying at pier price is 600 non negotiable (monopoly) and cheaper in bus terminal 550 incl transfer.

Names of two best speedboat operators and where they depart, price.

Where do they put in on PP Don?

    ==================================

Best option for cheap trip to PP Ley (one way)

Best option for cheap trip to Bamboo/Mai Pai (one way)

    ==================================

    Sppedboat operator that runs:

PP Ley > PP Don > Bamboo

    or

Bamboo > PP Ley > PP Don

    ==================================

Anyone aware of camping option on PP Don?

How many minutes to Khuraburi and what are earliest minivans?

What is latest minivan/bus to Khao Lak?

  10. I went back and read a bunch of much earlier comments. All of the anti union, anti human bullshit is as amusing as it is simple. Especially loved the Pol Pot reference. What most of you know about macro economics couldnt fill a can of Chang.

The world is a hugely complex place now. I find it ironic that so many of us deride workers and yet they still remain the drivers of modern consumer society.

But more than that, ehat you are saying is we dont need (want) you. If you are not x y z and a profit center, you are without worth and value. That is really sad.

As the world moves toward technology and away from.labor nations must endevour to make their populations ready for the challanges. Thailand fails miserably. There will be huge changes ahead and the technology will destroy an entire generation or more before it gets out of the gate. US is failing hard as well.

I love you all - blame the poor people. The least and the weakest among us.

Yes, you love Thailand - more like you love to exploit Thailand.

I probably know more macroeconomics than most since I studied it for 4 years before starting a business (and learning microeconomics that way practically).

No one is saying workers aren't needed or good people. We're against the idea that the economy is a zero sum game, meaning that we don't belive that because some are rich it is because others are poor or that some people earning (much) more means less for those who are 'workers'.

If you look empirically at history, countries which have implemented free market capitalist economies have become richer - for all - than countries which have tried socialist or marxist policies.

Minimum wages and unions are harmful because they crowd out those who are not worth minimum wage. This is simple economics learned in 101 courses.

In China where there are no unions, wages have risen a lot, to the point were production is moving to cheaper countries. Minimum wages and unions were not needed to raise wages.

The troubles facing the poor in Thailand is cultural discrimination against the Isaan population (and others) and a feudal society which is corrupt and nepotist. It is the lack of competition from foreign capitalist companies which maintain these imbalances. A capitalist run company is a company run on merit and not on the color of your skin.

Education and improvement of skill is the only way to earn more. A lot of poor and low income in Thailand have a very self defeating attitude instilled from a young age. They simply dare not believe that they could get the same as others. That has nothing to do with economics but culture and politics - again, not allowing foreign companies to hire talented and hungry locals regardless of 'caste' is what is keeping them poor. And that is just how the elite wants it so they can have their minimum wage maids, guard and motocy drivers.

Fix the cultural problems, not the free market.

    Sigh

I don't disagree with your cultural angle you raised but this is personal prejuidce and this is not going away. It is also a red herring.

I guarantee you that to this day, all the low end workers in BKK are not being paid B15000 a month for 50 hours a week.

  11. I have a few Casablanca maduro cigars I would like to unload before I go back to US. I did not finish my annual allotment for a variety of reasons - brought too many this year, did not get out camping enough, forgot them one trip, can't smoke in the apt, can't afford good whiskey in the bars in BKK - like that. Good all round smoke and great value. Stored in fridge. Do not want to post to classifieds as this is tobacco product, mods be kind.

  12. Is not insane......commanded increases always have unseen consequences. Political interference in the market without checks and balances always leaves things out of kilter, in fact politicians should learn to keep out altogether.

The political decision to release the money supply in the West to cover up for a lack of productivity brought short term political success and a long term calamity.

We borrowed trillions and exported it to the East, then wondered what happened when the bubble burst. <deleted>

    Wake up.

So you are saying that the Thai economy is "out of balance' because some tight fisted bastards now need to cough up an extra three baht an hour? Just want to be sure I understand you.

You labor under "old think" premises, you have no solutions but just deal in Reagan/Thatcher pablum and tripe.

    Nonsense.

It's out of balance because of political interference.

    Next?

Just shows how little you know of Thailand, even less the world. This nation has had a dozen constitutions and no less than sixty PMs. Developing countries are always a seething cauldren of hot mess.

Like I said, its just "old think". To.a carpenter, every problem looks like a nail.

This crappy govt isnt any more ineffective or prone to graft and giveaeays than the dozen before that or the dozen before them.

Despite its "imbalance" its performing better than your island. Funny that no?

  13. Aye and Buckskin Joe's Village - Halycon days and nights :)

Haha that was it. Buckskin Joes and all.that nonsense.

    Grace hotel coffee shop.

God, Thailand was so much fun back then. Inwas lucky to.do that in my early thirties. The characters I partied with...no one cared how much money you made or how you made it. Real free spirits and some totally twisted souls.

I remember Clinton plaza but Inwas already in Pattaya, Bangkok.just became overpriced and over policed.

  14. You have an interesting viewpoint !

Countries are free to set their own "rules" ---------------

Ever tried to obtain a " Green Card" ---------I am sure it is just free for the asking to Thai People !

My wife holds a ten year visa which allows her to stay in the US six months at a go. Others might find it more difficult, but we found it a breeze— and we were not married, I do not hold a job in Thailand nor did I have anything more than fifty tourist visas behind me.

I think the IR will.be a breeze as would a green card as it comes automatically with the visa.

Countries are free to set their own rules. Im free to dislike them especially if they are arbitrary and capricious.

I have said many times Inwould be very happy to.accept the dame terms of visa as my wife has for states.

Which begs another question if the US does not require forced funds banking or even accident insurance why should Thailand?

I think everyone is forgetting we are not getting anytbing but the permisdion to stay on 90 days further with any non o or its extendion thereof. Its a glorified tourist visa. Nothing more, nothing. That is why everyone lived on TRs for so many years until we were all forced into o visas. No benefit, none.

  15. Yes, very fun but often.did not get going until too.late for me. Later, I bailed out of BKK for Pattaya but thatbar was the best. Only the insanity in Cambodia in the early 90s matched the nonsense that went on in that place.

And if you pm Hermespan he will very much remember it as well as all those dodgy bars under the overpass.

  16. Powered speakers for use at work and B700 chip in on her Merrell hiking shoes.

B5000 (my half) for her two nieces high school fees (last month)

B3000 to her father (this Sunday). Her uncle died and he and mom were charged with taking the body upcountry. He will miss work.

This coming weekend - steak or sushi, her choice.

    I guess Im married now...

My fourth month living on 15k a month as well.

  19. The classic definition of inflation is too many dollars chasing too few goods. Thailand has loads of goods and cheap as well. Prices are rising for a variety of reasons, none of which have to do with the "help" making an extra b50 a day <deleted>.

Low unemployment and depressed, stagnant wages. One third the nation.is foomed, another third is hopelessly over employed and another third underemployed

Its always the greedy, grubbing old people that horde everything and cant let go. Enough is never enough. Especially in Thailand. Its a real paradise for wealthy Thais. Mercedes, hookers, legal immunity - list is endless.

  20. This is insane. Prices are up but its not due to scant few that recd a tiny increase in.wages and why would even the poorest among us not support it?

300 per day - ten hour day. B30 per hour

6000 per month - I recall my former landlord trying to.get maids to work for that in 2005 in Pattaya but she couldnt keep anyone.

This just forced the labor thieves to buck up.

    Grinches

  21. Spirits are practically free. I just paid b220 for a bottle of Jim Beam on my visa run a few days ago.

Beer is beer and if you want it chilled amd canned it's all about standard priced world wide. Ingredients all come from same nations - all imported. Hops and barely, not so much in Singapore...

I developed a drinking problem in Cambodia. Returning twenty years later Id do much less partying but far more pub marathons and drinking alone - if I was not married amd living IN Thailand.

Outside Cambodia, only Lao and Vietnam have cheap alcohol. So does Phils, but its swill. The rest ate far more expensive.
