  1. Hop on a bus (511, or 2 which is free...but look at the signs) down by Kok Wua junction (Tanao/Ratchadamnoen) then can ride bus all the way to 'Wireless Road'.

Can also get a bus from your area to Ratchathewi BTS which is also on the Sukhumvit line (and probably the closest BTS to you)

  2. For Gawds sake don't get them into 'intimidating' people by going "trick or treat"'ing. When this practice was adopted in the UK there were many of the 'older generation' that felt VERY UNCOMFORTABLE.

Just stick with pumpkin carving, and the historical/traditional aspects.

  3. Your gateway WILL be a valid address on your LAN - but it (the gateway device) then needs to know where to send the log data from this device.

Given the nature and purpose of this device, and assuming that you would like to have all info recorded in a single, central location I would suggest that there would be a certain additional investment required for each site deploying them, in terms of local comms h/w.

Why not log data locally at each site and set up a scheduled email task or something locally to send the data to the central monitoring site via 'more normal' channels ? You could then (automatically) monitor the incoming emails at the central location for 'significant events' and raise the necessary alerts that way.

Of course this all depends on required service response times ... but the time difference between direct comms of the log data and receipt via email (or another method) need not be too great depending on the 'carrier'.

  4. Too many 'aspiring' website designers already trying, and failing, to make it here - if you haven't got a particular 'niche' audience (and by that I mean specialising in websites geared towards a particular industry/business sector with an inherent knowledge of those business sectors which will allow you to give 'added value' at the website development stage) then I would say don't bother trying to start a business along those lines.

I am only commenting on the 'freelance website designer' part !

  5. For those from the UK who remember "Inspector Morse" (or for that matter the 'Midsommer thing') - why do all of these 'early reports' make you wish that John Thaw, John Nettles and even Geraldine McEwan/Julia McKenzie (Miss Marple, but not a patch on Margaret Rutherford IMHO) were all kicking it up over here - sure, still have crime ... but all of the most difficult cases would be solved over a couple of evenings of 'light entertainment' - and they could make a bit extra out of teaching on the side !

    Tongue firmly in cheek.

  6. The usual 110v/220v convertor/adapter is usually a heavy brown coloured thing (I won't say that it looks like a bare transformer because that will probably mean nothing to you).

If the power requirement of your equipment is of the two thin narrow round pin variety then these will prove to be unsuitable due to a 'bad fit' - but that generally goes for all Thai power couplings, even the three pin on most occasions.

Take your actual power plug along to a decent electrical shop and tell them you want a step up transformer from US 120v to Thai 220v and make sure that the connector you get allows a secure fit.

Might also be worth checking if the power requirements of your equipment are rated 120v to 240v as a lot of power supplies are quite adaptable nowadays.

  7. This might actually be the Thai Cyber Crime Act being tested more thoroughly than it has been previously - my spelling of 'banana', and often my pronunciation of the word, is often misinterpreted !

The act is pretty draconian, and it should extend as far as internet cafes and any public wireless access points but I suspect the first people to feel it will be those that subscribe to an ISP connection as the govt body will target them first.

What you have seen/experienced is probably just a result of a 'testing of the water' exercise as they try and put some controls in place at the ISP level.

    But who knows.

  8. Sorry - I was thinking that I was still living in the UK - but of course I have been in Thailand for two years. I have the 'free health' thing here - but you really need to work for it a bit. And then 'free' really is "free" - as in 'off the internet' - DIY surgery at home !

Always interesting to watch a friend cut into a small growth just below her nipple simply because it would cost a lot of baht to have it done by someone "qualified".

  9. Surely that is the time when the rubber shark comes back into the picture. No learning about Thailand though - better off watch Bangkok Dangerous for a real taste of life here. Mmmmm - Nitong - good food and plastic chairs.

Have seen the movies (unfortunately) - but have only lived here ("safe" in BKK and other nice places) for 2 years so actually know nothing.

Can easily say as much as others with so much less to offer though.

    Regards,

    K

  10. Hi,

I bought an HP Voice Messenger phone in April and am now on my 4th one (which I dare not take out of the box) !

On each occasion the keyboard has failed (keys become stuck down).

Unfortunately I do not have the option to get another brand/model as a replacement.

Whilst I don't believe that there is a basic engineering design flaw with this phone I do feel that it is not suitable for use in Thailand (or anywhere that may require the use of sweaty hands for holding and sweaty thumbs for typing).

Just wondering if anyone else here is using this model.

    Regards

  11. Sorry, new 'member' here. Why is there no definitive information available relating to such often asked questions ? Before I chose to move here (2 years ago) I 'did the rounds' and all that I found was "conflicting" information. I accept that each case is different - but NOT THAT DIFFERENT.

Both the Thai and British ('cos that is what I am) government sites are most unhelpful in such matters (IMHO) - ThaiVisa forums relate only personal experience and 'emotive' comment.

I am currently trying to work with the BCCT to get a "this is the situation now" FAQ re visas and WP's for UK nationals online. Of course it will change daily, and local 'rules' will always apply - but it has got to be better than people basing decisions on the experience of someone else who may have totally different circumstances to themselves.
