  1. King Power is mean to its employees. My friend worked there for a year and left. He worked in the airport shops, anything missing on the shelves, all the staff in that section had to pay for it. Every month he had over 1000Bahts deduced from his salary.

I can understand if one is selling Rolex watches or jewelleries, one has to be responsible. But he was in the souvenir/confectionary section.

  2. I've got a significant amount of USD in a thai bank account and am thinking about moving it over to Hong Kong. I just don't trust banks. Anyone know how to go about doing this and can reccomend a bank in HK? Also, what kind of docs are required to open an account in HK?

Go to HSBC (Rama IV) open a Premier Account there, they can arrange another Preimer Account for u in HK. Money transfers between Premier Accounts are free through the Bank's Internet site but the total account balance has to be over 1million Bahts.

  3. Hello,

Even in my temp apartment I need a few things: tiny coffeemaker, clothes hangers, iron, etc. The main street by my apartment (I'm steps from the Saphon Thaksin station) doesn't seem to have these, at least not in an easily identifiable place, and Central World where I work looks to be all Gucci. Where can I find these sorts of sundries? Many thanks ... this is the first day since arrival Tuesday morning that I haven't spent 12 hours in the office, so I'm a bit slow getting my bearings.

Try the Central Department Store (connected with Chitlom BTS Station) or the store across from Central World, Big C (Central at Chitlom is more upmarket)

  4. ^And the trolls come out to play!

But it's a timely revival of the thread.

I think if anyone's truly looking for 30 something yos (though not much older) you only have to go to the bars and karaoke places on Soi 2 around DJ Station (but don't go into DJ Station, please, or you'll be surrounded by the 20 something yo MB crowd).  Last time I checked, the place was swarming on Friday and Saturday night with eligible (and friendly) 30+ types, many of whom even had real jobs.  The English levels might not be very high and you might be the only farang there, but it's likely you'll find someone friendly and genuine without too much trouble.

    "Steven"

On Fridays and Saturdays, JJ Park at Silom Soi 2 and the Telephone Bar (the back seciton) are full of Thai guys in their 30s.

  6. Also, just to clarify, the special business tax doesn't apply at all after you've held the property for 5 years.

Thks for the info. Where would I get the yellow book? The khet office?

You need to go to your district office, i.e the Amphur. Be prepared for a lot of bureaucratic hassle. You will need the usual photos, residence letter from immigration, passport / visa and anything else that you can think of. A bottle or two of JW Black may or may not help.

I'll be interested to hear how you get on. As I said previously, in my case the Banglamung Amphur have proved very obstructive. In addition to the documentation mentioned above I was asked to provide a translation of my passport, into Thai, notarised by the British Embassy and certified by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Having provided that I was then required to provide the names of my parents' (dead for 40 years), translated into Thai.

Having provided all of this the Amphur then produced a two-page personal information form, all in Thai, which they said I had to fill in, in Thai, in handwriting. They categorically refused to fill out the form with me, which could have been done quite easily, I think. I ran the form past my lawyer who told me that it wanted information that the Amphur was not entitled to have and was akin to the sort of form that the police fill out when they are charging you with a serious offence! One question asked if I had ever been ordained as a Buddhist monk! I was advised to not provide the information and to let the application for the yellow book lapse, which I have done.

If you manage to succeed in your endeavour please PM me with the details - I might then try again.

    Cheers

    DM

    Hi DM,

I asked a Thai friend to call the Khet office. The procedure to get my name on a yellow book is similiar to what you described. I am not going to do it unless someone said it is important to have it done.

  7. I am on a yearly retirement visa and recently I brought a condo in Bangkok.

I have received 2 documents, the first one shows the ownership of the condo (I guess it is the deed), and the second one is a little dark blue booklet (slightly larger than the passport). I was told to go to a government office to add my name in this booklet. Would they add my name for someone who is on a yearly retirement visa? What is the benefits having my name on the blue book?

    Thanks.

  9. Any suggestions to earn a higher return than bank deposit? The amount is 2m Bahts for a period of 2 to 3 years, willing to take a slightly higher risk but not as high as Thai stocks.

I heard about the Thai government retail bond, do I have to be a Thai citizen to buy it?
